As the Cardinals head into the deadline as likely sellers, a handful of the club’s players are getting significant attention on the trade market. Of the team’s major pieces, no player is more likely to be moved than closer Ryan Helsley, a free agent after the 2025 season. The Dodgers and Mets have already been connected to Helsley in some capacity this summer, while the Phillies were known to have interest in the closer earlier this year and the Blue Jays were among the clubs to check in on his availability this past offseason. MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reports that all four of those teams remain current suitors for Helsley, and adds two more interested teams to the pile: the Rangers and the Yankees.
Helsley, 31, is arguably the best rental reliever on the trade market this summer. A two-time All-Star, Helsley sports a strong resume as one of the top closers in the sport. He’s posted a 2.03 ERA with a 2.55 FIP across 203 2/3 innings of work since the start of the 2022 season. Along the way, he’s picked up 102 saves and struck out batters at a 32.9% clip. It’s an undeniably elite profile, and while his 2025 numbers may not be quite on that level he’s still been fantastic for the Cardinals this year. In 36 innings of work, Helsley has posted a 3.00 ERA with a 26.1% strikeout rate and converted 21 saves in 26 opportunities. Those five blown saves have already matched a career high, but Helsley still figures to be very attractive in a market where other rental closers like Raisel Iglesias and Kenley Jansen come with blemishes of their own.
There are other relievers who are surely more attractive than Helsley available, but each of those elite closers come with team control beyond the 2025 season and as such will cost significantly more in terms of prospect capital. Helsley could be a more affordable option for clubs who balk at the prices of Jhoan Duran, David Bednar, Pete Fairbanks and others—particularly after Guardians closer and likely trade candidate Emmanuel Clase was effectively taken off the market by a sports betting investigation. Clase’s exit from that market will likely further incentivize other clubs with controllable relief talent to keep their prices elevated, and reporting earlier today suggests that the Pirates are asking interested clubs for a package headlined by a prospect within that their organization’s top five in exchange for Bednar.
That could make Helsley a particularly intriguing addition for clubs that aren’t especially keen to give up top talent, and the Yankees and Rangers may both fall into that bucket to some degree. There have been some signals that Aaron Judge’s elbow injury has pushed the club to consider being less aggressive than usual this summer, and when teams would surely be asking for top talents like George Lombard Jr. and Spencer Jones in exchange for top controllable relief arms it could make sense for the Yankees to prioritize a more affordable rental player like Helsley. On the other hand, with Devin Williams already in the fold the club may be comfortable looking at relievers without Helsley’s closing experience like Danny Coulombe or perhaps even teammate Phil Maton.
The Rangers, meanwhile, appear to be leaning heavily towards buying and have already been connected to Bednar today. Texas has no established closer in the fold so, someone like Helsley to lock down the ninth inning could be very valuable for them. With that said, the team has a solid but not excellent 47.9% chance of making the playoffs according to Fangraphs. Another complicating factor is the luxury tax, which ownership appears determined to avoid paying into this year. Helsley’s $8.2MM salary is hardly exorbitant and the Rangers would only have to pay a pro-rated portion of it to cover the final two months of the season, but perhaps the club would prefer to focus on someone like Bednar who would be under control for next year and come with less of a short-term financial burden.
Given that Helsley is a rental, any team that acquires him will have to battle it out for his services in free agency barring a surprise extension. That’s a battle that very well could include the Cardinals themselves, as Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch writes today that Helsley has made clear to the club that he would be willing to return to St. Louis via free agency this offseason even if he winds up being traded over the coming days. It’s far from common for traded rentals to return to the club that dealt them the following winter, but Helsley has long indicated he would like to remain in the organization beyond this season. Goold notes that it has occurred in a few high-profile cases in recent years, such as with Aroldis Chapman and the Yankees at the 2016 trade deadline as well as Jeurys Familia and the Mets back in 2018.
Just say Yankees and Dodgers interested in everyone and leave it at that.
But the Yankees arent interested in everyone? Theyve dumpster dived twice and showed interest in a RP. Thats not really all that crazy
He’s not got a ton of salary left to pay. Anyone of the teams mentioned could afford him if the Cardinals also send cash to offset. Life isnt all about the Dodgers and Yankees but they’re very competitive teams. The Rangers really make the most sense if you ask me
Very unlikely the Cards send any money unless the return grows significantly.
If multiple players are involved then no they dont, like taking a bad contact to help the Rangers avoid salary cap as well as getting prospects in return. If its multiple prospects Thats when they might include cash to get the deal done. For example the cards send Helsley and a minor leaguer, the rangers send a bad contract and multiple prospects thats when cash would be included? Thats pretty much what I had in mind when I said that but didn’t want to type it all if that’s makes sense at all…
Im interested in Margot Robbie. Everyone is INTERESTED in something.
Helsley is from Oklahoma so St Louis is about as close to home as it gets. My guess is thats why he wants to stay.
I dont think the Cardinals are for sure sellers, even with 2 games remaining before the deadline. I think at this point they probably should but its not a slam dunk. The Royals are buying and they are worse off. The Guardians just lost Clase and they haven’t sold anything yet.
Everyone talks about how the Cardinals should trade Helsley then never makes an actual suggestion on what the trade would look like. If the Yankees want to deal Spencer Jones yeah trade him. If the Rangers want to take Arenado with him ok cool. But come up with an actual suggestion stop with the “they should trade him for whatever they can get” nonsense.
He grew up closer to Kansas city or even Arlington TX compared to St Louis…so sure close.
But not as close as it gets
I said ABOUT as close as it gets. Why you felt the need to say that and add nothing else i dont have a clue.
Because the facts don’t back up your made-up narratives.
He was “ball-parking” it. He spoke facts.
They seem to be in the thick of the WC race
This one sounds like a false alarm. Unconvinced that the Cards are sellers.
Surprised the talk around Kenley Jansen hasn’t heated up any. Seems like he’s a lock to move somewhere.
Those false alarms have been going off since the offseason. The site is trying to save face here.
paradigms die slowly
Three dimes, even more so.
I think the PBO discussing a trade with the best starting pitcher on the team set off the alarm.
I dont think that actually happened. I do think they wanted to trade Contreras because him and Herrera are too similar. But I dont believe they ever wanted to trade Gray. And Arenado wanted to be traded not the other way around.
The.Cardinals.Are.Sellers.
Now there’s a convincing argument.
Helsley himself said he was 90% sure he was getting traded, so there’s room for speculation. Straight from the horse’s mouth.
Well, since the last to know is usually the player himself…
players are emotional beings
True, but my guess is he was at least given a heads up from the front office that there’s a good chance he gets moved. Where he might go, no idea everyone is looking for relievers.
I can see him being informed that the team intends to make him available, but translating this into a 90% trade certainty has to happen entirely inside the player’s head.
That’s a valid point.
and HS math is about as far as a MLB gets
@blues
Name a single rumor of the Cards being tied to acquiring a single player (without a trade being involved) on the free agent market.
Name a single time in the last month the Cards/Mo have even HINTED at anything resembling an acquisition at the deadline.
We’ll wait.
If you have been following this team at all, you would know they are not buying at the deadline.
How far back are we going with this quiz?
Anyway, to repeat: I didn’t say anything about the Cards buying. A team doesn’t have to sell or buy at the deadline. They can choose to play the hand they’ve been dealt, as teams on the bubble often do.
This site has been saying the cards are sellers for two seasons…and made some terrible predictions such as Arenado getting traded. I’m curious to see if Mo really wants to go out selling with the cards in the WC hunt. I’d think he’d want to make a playoff run and end on a good note.
Mo is supposed to fall on the sword for this season and give Bloom a clean slate.
I have a hard time believing Mo would ever do that.
It’s happening right now.
How do? Because he finally stopped forcing Marmol to start Fedde?
The Phillies and Jays also make a lot of sense if Helsley is dealt. I dont know what the Jays have that makes sense. Perhaps Tiedeman but I would want more than that. The Phillies either Abel or Miller. Miller might be ranked high for now but he has a sub 700 OPS at AA his ranking will go down. Abel for Helsley 1 for 1 would make sense.
The Red Sox make sense if Helsley is truly available which I’m doubtful he is.
Bruin – Red Sox won’t get Helsley because they’ve got Hicks, Alcala and Hendriks. Hahahaha!!
Abel for a rental reliever makes no sense. That’s not how these trades tend to work.
The Cardinals might get Cabrera for Helsley. No way they get Abel.
Who is Cabrera?
Name the last time a top rental reliever in baseball was traded and look at what the return was.
I will start. Chapman for Torres. Now your turn.
Chapman is an outlier because the cubs overpaid hard at the time since they were all in
Helsley is not Chapman in his prime. Teams have also learned over the last 9 years not to trade the farm for rentals.
You needed to go back nine years for an obvious overpay. Two months of Helsley in no way equals prime Chapman.
Name and example of a team trading away or acquiring a top rental reliever at the deadline. Just name one. You dont need to go back nine years just name one.
Hader was traded at the deadline with another year of control. He was also having a down year. He brought back 1 good prospect a questionable prospect and a couple of veteran spare parts.
The Brewers got Taylor Rogers who was a quality reliever in his own right but soon to be free agent. They got Gasser and Lamet a couple of solid prospects. They also got Esteury Ruiz who they later used to get Contreras.
I would trade Helsley for Contreras alone. And the Brewers got a lot more than that out of that deal.
Extra year of control matters a lot. The As made a really stupid trade which allowed the Brewers to get Contreras for Ruiz.
Helsley for Contreras sounds good to me. I am ready to do that deal.
The Brewers’ acquisition of Contreras was part of a complicated OFF-SEASON trade. Why not wait and see what the Cards receive in return for Helsley?
Remember: If the Cards don’t trade Helsley, they’ll lose him over the winter for nothing.
Who cares if they dont get anything for Helsley? If its nothing good then dont deal him.
Helsley would be a great get for TX and the cost would be lower than Bednar and much lower than Jhoan Duran or Jax, but I think TX will likely use Helsley as plan B. Tx might offer Moore and Foscue or Freeman + a couple of prospects further down the list for Bednar. They won’t give up Walcott short of anything than a multiple years controlled pitcher like Gore or better.
Foscue?
I dont even know who Moore and Freeman are.
The thing is if Helsley is available lots of teams will be in on him. I’m sure the Red Sox would love to add him. It get into a bidding war for any available top level bullpen arm.
No way, dude. We saw how volatile relievers are in Williams. If Jones gets shipped, it better be for a young starter.
Jones isnt worth that much.
Jones has completely changed and is now back to hitting bombs, if Bellinger leaves this year or next year jones could take his spot in the outfield
Jones is a minor leaguer. Duran is one of if not the best closers in the game on a very team friendly deal for years.
Not watching this team until the playoffs, they don’t have that magic or ‘it’ factor exciting teams demonstrate. Idc who calls make a bandwagon they are flat out not fun to watch. I like to be entertained when I watch baseball win or lose. The Yankees wins and loses are both pathetic. Might start watching some Cubs or Padres and make them my NL team.
I’d prefer a mlb pitcher in return for Helsley with some club control, to help backfill the IP that will be lost from this season.
A contender isn’t doing that.
Tigers have some intriguing guys like Anderson, Clark, Briceno, Wilson, and McGonigle. Trade 1 and a lower level one for Helsley, maybe add another of those first names if they throw in Gray. Or build a package around Arrenado and Helsley. If that doesn’t work, go for Suarez and Kelly or Gallen, with 2 of those names and a lower level prospect, and work a trade with what’s left for Bednar. Tigers need to go all in and get at least 1 #2 or 3 starter, a closer, and a 3B who can hit.
By this point in the year if you are a team on the bubble you should be in 1 of 2 lanes:
Lane 1) We are a World Series Contender, and we have a legitimate chance to win the World Series with a few additions: the Rangers & Mariners are in this lane.
Lane 2) Even if we sneak into the playoffs, we aren’t a World Series Contender, and unless something drastic happens we aren’t winning the World Series, so how do we get back to lane 1 in the shortest amount of time?? The Cardinals are in this lane. Sure they might sneak into the Wildcard, but this team is just too bad pitching wise AND offensively to make a run in the playoffs. The 6 games precededing the All Star break (6 at home vs. Washington & Atlanta) and the 6 games after the All Star Break (6 @ Arizona & Colorado) showed me all I needed to see that this isn’t a pennant winning team, much less a title winning team. Aside from a hot stretch in May this team (Cardinals) would be a clear seller, so anything they can sell they should.
^ you make several good points
I think this trade and Maton hinges on the results tonight and tomorrow. If they win both, only Matz gets moved because that relieves payroll and helps next year. If they lose 1 or both remaining games against the Fish, I believe all 3 are moved. It would be awesome if they could bring Helsley back after he helps a true contender for the rest of ’25.
Helsely has a high Whip this year and at this point, he’s not a guy you want to bring in with runners on base.. He is getting his saves because he has been starting the 9th with no one on base. If other teams are willing to pay top dollar for him, i think the Cardinals need to trade him, even if they decide not to go into sell mode.
