Twins Sign Rich Harden

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | December 21, 2012 at 9:48am CDT

The Twins have signed free agent starter Rich Harden to a minor league contract that includes an invitation to MLB Spring Training, the team announced. Wasserman Media Group represents Harden, who missed the entire 2012 season with a right shoulder strain. The right-hander underwent shoulder surgery to repair his right rotator cuff in January.

Harden last pitched at the MLB level in 2011, posting a 5.12 ERA with 9.9 K/9 and 3.4 BB/9 in 82 2/3 innings for the Athletics. If healthy, the 31-year-old would join a number of other newcomers in a rotation that's been remodeled in the past two months. GM Terry Ryan has also acquired starters Vance Worley, Kevin Correia and Mike Pelfrey and prospect Alex Meyer this offseason.

Harden achieved considerable success early on in his career, posting a 3.99 ERA in 189 2/3 innings in his age-22 season. He continued to strike out opposing hitters at an impressive rate, but soon sustained shoulder and oblique injuries. The Victoria, British Columbia native has not qualified for the ERA title since his first full season with the A's, back in 2004.

Latest On Red Sox, Mike Napoli

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | December 21, 2012 at 9:14am CDT

The Red Sox agreed to sign Mike Napoli to a three-year, $39MM contract more than two weeks ago, but the deal hasn’t yet been announced. As questions surrounding the agreement continue to mount, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports that Napoli has a problem with one of his hips that led to diminished interest from the Mariners.

However, if Red Sox officials thought the condition was serious, they would probably have backed out by now in Rosenthal’s view. Red Sox GM Ben Cherington has said the sides are “working through some issues.” Rosenthal suggests this means issues arose during Napoli’s physical and the Red Sox are trying to re-work his contract. The Red Sox could look to reduce the term of the deal or they could push for protective language, as they have done in the past with players such as J.D. Drew.

A person connected to the MLBPA told Rosenthal that the union considers the team’s concern justifiable. Paragon Sports International represents Napoli.

Mets Interested In Young, Marcum, Capuano, Harang

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | December 21, 2012 at 8:18am CDT

The Mets are exploring trades and contacting free agents as they look to add depth to a rotation that no longer includes R.A. Dickey, Ken Davidoff of the New York Post reports. The Mets have reached out to many free agent starters, including Chris Young and Shaun Marcum. Davidoff reported yesterday that the Mets are also interested in free agents Carl Pavano and Francisco Liriano.

The Mets have interest in Dodgers starters Chris Capuano and Aaron Harang, Davidoff reports (Twitter link). The Dodgers figure to trade at least one starting pitcher after signing Zack Greinke, so Capuano or Harang could be dealt. The Mets have engaged the Dodgers in trade talks about their starting pitching depth, according to the Post.

GM Sandy Alderson continues searching for a right-handed hitting outfielder, Davidoff writes. The Mets would prefer to add an outfielder capable of playing right field so they can move Lucas Duda to left. Scott Hairston and Cody Ross are potential targets for the Mets. However signing those players could be challenging, since the Mets have approximately $10MM to spend.

Quick Hits: Blue Jays, Marlins, Ethier

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | December 20, 2012 at 3:35pm CDT

Now that we’re midway through the 2012-13 offseason, Jayson Stark of ESPN.com checks in with executives, statistical analysts and oddsmakers to take a look at the teams that have improved themselves the most this winter. Not surprisingly, the Blue Jays are a popular choice for most improved team. Here are some more links from around MLB…

  • The Marlins tried to trade for Mike Olt of the Rangers, Nick Castellanos of the Tigers and Jedd Gyorko of the Padres before signing Placido Polanco, Stark reports.
  • The Mariners recently spoke with the Dodgers about Chris Capuano, Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports reports. However, it doesn't appear that those talks have progressed. Seattle could add a veteran arm after trading Jason Vargas to the Angels for Kendrys Morales, and the Dodgers have a surplus of starting pitchers.
  • The Red Sox asked the Dodgers about Andre Ethier at the start of the winter and heard he was “not available,” Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports (on Twitter). It doesn’t appear that the Dodgers will trade Ethier this winter.
  • The Mariners also talked to the Dodgers about Ethier, Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports report. However, talks failed to progress.

Rick Porcello Drawing Trade Interest

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | December 20, 2012 at 3:33pm CDT

THURSDAY: The Orioles and Mariners are among the teams involved in talks about Porcello, Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports reports (on Twitter).

FRIDAY: The Pirates and Padres are interested in Porcello, Jim Bowden of ESPN.com and MLB Network Radio reports (on Twitter).

TUESDAY: Quite a few National League teams asked about Tigers right-hander Rick Porcello at last week’s Winter Meetings, Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com reports. However, the Tigers need Porcello at this point, so he’s not available.

If the Tigers re-sign Anibal Sanchez, they’d have an abundance of starters and could move Porcello. Detroit’s front office executives hope to sign Sanchez, but they were told that their early offers weren’t close to being enough, according to Knobler. It appears that the free agent right-hander seeks more money than the Tigers are willing to offer. The Tigers pursued a trade for James Shields, but they haven’t pursued free agent starters other than Sanchez, Knobler writes.

Porcello, 23, posted a 4.59 ERA with 5.5 K/9, 2.2 BB/9 and a 53.2% ground ball rate in 176 1/3 innings this past season. He earned $3.1MM in 2012 and has a projected salary of $4.7MM for 2013. He’s under team control through 2015 and could be a fit for the Rockies, Padres or Pirates in my view.

Minor Moves: Tateyama, Greenberg, Miller

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | December 20, 2012 at 3:06pm CDT

The latest minor moves from around MLB…

  • The Rangers signed right-hander Yoshinori Tateyama to a minor league deal, Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports (on Twitter). The 36-year-old appeared in 14 games for the Rangers this past season, but spent the majority of the year at Triple-A, where he posted a 1.13 ERA with 10.2 K/9 and 1.6 BB/9 in 39 2/3 innings.
  • The Orioles agreed to sign Adam Greenberg to a minor league contract, Steve Melewski of MASNsports.com reports (on Twitter). Greenberg's MLB career nearly ended when he was hit on the head with a pitch seven years ago, but the Marlins signed him this past September and he got an official MLB at bat.
  • The Reds re-signed catcher Corky Miller to a minor league deal that includes an invitation to MLB Spring Training, ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reports (on Twitter). Miller, 36, spent this past season with the Reds' Triple-A team, posting a .235/.386/.354 batting line in 313 plate appearances. He has ten years of MLB experience, but last appeared in the big leagues with the Reds in 2010.

Marlins Sign Placido Polanco

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | December 20, 2012 at 1:25pm CDT

The Marlins have signed Placido Polanco to a one-year contract, the team announced. The agreement with the ACES client includes performance bonuses, according to Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com, who first reported the agreement (Twitter links). Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald first reported that the sides were nearing a one-year, $2.75MM contract.

The Phillies declined their half of the $5.5MM mutual option on Polanco's contract after the regular season, making him a free agent. The 37-year-old hit 15 doubles and posted a .257/.302/.327 batting line in 328 plate appearances this past season. He missed considerable time with back injuries, playing in just 90 games.

The Marlins also had some interest in Brandon Inge and Miguel Tejada.

Free Agent Rumors: Saunders, Red Sox, Twins, Lohse

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | December 20, 2012 at 1:00pm CDT

Some free agent notes from around MLB…

  • The Orioles are still in talks with free agent left-hander Joe Saunders, Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports reports (on Twitter). The Orioles have had a quiet offseason so far, but they do want to add a starter.
  • Though the Red Sox won't rule out the possibility of adding another outfielder, they feel "comfortable" with Ryan Kalish or Daniel Nava as a left-handed hitting platoon partner for Jonny Gomes, Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald reports (on Twitter).
  • It sounds like the Twins are still interested in adding a starting pitcher, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports (on Twitter). “I think we have to continue to look," GM Terry Ryan said. The Twins have added Vance Worley, Kevin Correia, Alex Meyer and Mike Pelfrey so far this offseason.
  • Anthony Castrovince of MLB.com examines the market for Kyle Lohse, explaining the free agent right-hander's strengths, shortcomings and potential destinations. Once Edwin Jackson agrees to a deal, Lohse will clearly be the top free agent starter available.
  • Bobby Crosby, who last played at the MLB level in 2010, plans to make a comeback, agent Paul Cohen told Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (Twitter link). The free agent infielder will work out for for teams in mid-January. Crosby, who turns 33 next month, was the American League Rookie of the Year in 2004.

Amaro On Outfield Market

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | December 20, 2012 at 9:50am CDT

Even after trading for Ben Revere, the Phillies could add another established outfielder. But GM Ruben Amaro Jr. told Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com that the asking prices of the top free agent outfielders are a deterrent (Twitter link).

"We feel like the demands are north of where we want to be,'' Amaro said.

Michael Bourn, Nick Swisher and Cody Ross are the top free agent outfielders available, and presumably Amaro is alluding to some or all of these players. The Phillies, who have Domonic Brown, John Mayberry Jr. and Darin Ruf as internal outfield candidates, are also eyeing trades. They’ve been linked to right-handed hitting trade candidates such as Alfonso Soriano and Vernon Wells.

Strong Progress For Cubs, Edwin Jackson

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | December 20, 2012 at 7:24am CDT

The Cubs are the frontrunners for free agent right-hander Edwin Jackson, but as of last night they weren't the only team pursuing the Legacy Sports Group client. The Indians were still talking with Jackson yesterday, and it wasn’t long ago that the Rangers and Padres had serious interest, too. The bidding is up to $50MM for Jackson, who turned 29 in September. Here are the latest Jackson-related rumors, with the most recent updates up top…

  • The Cubs have made "strong progress" on a four-year, $52MM deal with Jackson, ESPN.com's Buster Olney reports (Twitter links). Jackson is just about off of the board, Olney adds.
