Tigers Looking To Add A Bat

By Mike Axisa | July 24, 2009 at 5:27pm CDT

When speaking with Chris Iott of Mlive.com, team president and general manager Dave Dombrowski said that he's looking to add a bat to the Tigers' lineup.

"We're looking for a bat. As you start talking to clubs about trades, which we've been doing a lot of, a lot of the players that are available are DHs, in our mindset. And we think we might have as good a one as anybody."

While Marcus Thames has done the lion's share of the work at DH, Dombrowski is referring to Carlos Guillen, who came of the DL today. The Tigers were rumored to have some interest in Matt Holliday, but that ship has obviously sailed. The club designated the speedy Josh Anderson for assignment earlier today to make room for Guillen.

Odds And Ends: Wang, Maine, Scutaro

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 24, 2009 at 12:01pm CDT

Some links to read through as the trading heats up…

  • Dr. James Andrews will take a look at John Maine's throwing arm, according to Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post.
  • Dr. Andrews will also evaluate Chien-Ming Wang, according to Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News. Wang worries that he may need surgery.
  • Joel Sherman of the New York Post wonders if the Yankees and Mets will offer contracts to the pair of pitchers after the season.
  • Erik Manning of FanGraphs says the A's are big winners for acquiring Brett Wallace. Jon Heyman calls it a "great deal" for the A's and Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus calls it an "outstanding" trade for Oakland.
  • Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi told Mike Rutsey of the Toronto Sun that there's been a lot of interest in Marco Scutaro.
  • Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski told Chris Iott of MLive.com that Jeremy Bonderman may pitch out of the bullpen this season.
  • Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports says it doesn't sound like the Mariners will be big buyers if it means surrendering top prospects.
  • The Kansas City Star presents the Royals' 2010 payroll commitments.

Tigers DFA Josh Anderson

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 24, 2009 at 9:30am CDT

The Tigers designated outfielder Josh Anderson for assignment to make room for Carlos Guillen, according to MLB.com's Jason Beck. Anderson, 26, hit .242/.282/.315 with no homers in 74 games with the Tigers. He played all three outfield positions for the Tigers, and defended well in limited innings.

Knobler On Holliday, Giants, Tigers

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 24, 2009 at 9:13am CDT

A number of baseball officials tell Danny Knobler of CBS Sports that they expect plenty of activity in the final week before next Friday's trade deadline.

  • Billy Beane is apparently looking for young position players if he trades Matt Holliday.
  • The Giants are "very interested" in Holliday.
  • The Giants and Tigers have both checked out the Pirates and Nationals in their respective searches for bats. Adam Dunn and Nick Johnson have appeal, but the Giants would prefer a right-handed bat and the Tigers are hesitant to take on Dunn's $12MM salary for next season.
  • Knobler says Tigers owner Mike Ilitch could always make a last-minute push for Holliday or Roy Halladay.
  • There's no way to know how much flexibility the Rays, Rangers and Braves have until the deadline passes.

Edes On Holliday, Willingham, Sherrill

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 24, 2009 at 8:52am CDT

Yahoo's Gordon Edes hears the Cardinals aren't the only team interested in Matt Holliday. Here are the details:

  • The White Sox have some interest in Holliday, according to Edes' colleague, Tim Brown.
  • The Tigers have considered Holliday, but probably won't meet Billy Beane's asking price.
  • The Phillies have interest in Josh Willingham.
  • The Giants may be the favorites to acquire Nick Johnson, now that the Red Sox have Adam LaRoche.
  • George Sherrill has many suitors, including the Brewers and White Sox.
  • The Cubs and Red Sox would like to add left-handed relievers.

Odds And Ends: V-Mart, Tigers, Mets

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 23, 2009 at 10:34am CDT

Some links for the morning…

  • ESPN.com's Peter Gammons says the Adam LaRoche acquisition won't prevent the Red Sox from pursuing an impact bat like Victor Martinez.
  • MLB.com's Jason Beck predicts that the Tigers will trade close to next Friday's deadline if they decide to deal.
  • Manager Jim Leyland spends so little time thinking about trades that he doesn't even know who's available, according to Chris Iott of MLive.com. Someone needs to tell him about MLBTR.
  • ESPN.com's Rob Neyer says the notion that the Mets are contenders "borders on delusional."
  • Royals GM Dayton Moore tells Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star that he will "be very aggressive and put the throttle down" if he sees an opportunity to improve his club.
  • Justin Smoak, Martin Perez and Neftali Feliz lead Jamey Newberg's list of top Rangers prospects this week at MLB.com.
  • As anticipated, the Seibu Lions acquired minor league reliever Jonah Bayliss from the Blue Jays, according to the Kyodo News.
  • More than half of St. Louis Post-Dispatch readers believe the Julio Lugo-Chris Duncan swap was necessary.

Twins Seek Infielders; No Holliday For Tigers

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 23, 2009 at 8:37am CDT

The Twins continue their search for infielders and the Tigers don't seem likely to acquire Matt Holliday. Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports has the details:

  • The Twins, who could use infield help, have discussed an Orlando Cabrera trade with the A's.
  • The Twins could also pursue Jack Wilson, Freddy Sanchez or Marco Scutaro.
  • Mark Teahen could be an option, but it's unclear whether the Royals would deal within the division.
  • Ken Rosenthal hears that the Giants and Tigers will not be serious players for Matt Holliday.
  • The A's gave the Tigers a list of prospects to discuss for Holliday, but talks didn't develop.
  • The Tigers didn't want to discuss lefty Casey Crosby.

Holliday Drawing Interest

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 22, 2009 at 3:07pm CDT

A variety of scouts are watching the A's even though GM Billy Beane told Joe Stiglich of the San Jose Mercury News that the leadup to the deadline has been unusually quiet this year. The Giants and Tigers have "at least a degree of interest" in Matt Holliday and the Yankees have been scouting the A's, according to Stiglich.

Orlando Cabrera leads the league with a .382 July average, so he could also attract interest as the deadline nears.

Odds and Ends: White Sox, Correia, Ordonez, DNA Tests

By Brian Shephard | July 21, 2009 at 10:17pm CDT

A final batch of links for the night owls:

  • Ozzie Guillen does not expect any trades before the deadline, according to the Chicago Tribune's Mark Gonzales. But Scott Merkin of MLB.com talks to GM Ken Williams, who doesn't rule out the possibility.
  • MLB.com's Corey Brock reports that starter Kevin Correia could be the next Padre to be traded, though no significant interest has bubbled up yet.
  • On the same day that Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com asks if it's time for the Tigers to cut Magglio Ordonez, the former All-Star seems to answer by hitting a grand slam.
  • And The New York Times reports that Major League Baseball is using DNA tests to determine the age of some Latin American prospects.

Roy Halladay Rumors: Saturday

By Mike Axisa | July 18, 2009 at 3:11pm CDT

3:11pm: FOXSports.com's Jon Paul Morosi reports the Tigers have had internal conversations about Halladay, but doesn't see a deal happening:

"Meantime, the Tigers have had some internal discussions about Toronto ace Roy Halladay," writes Morosi," but have yet to initiate a trade dialogue with the Blue Jays about him. It's unlikely that Detroit would be able to meet Toronto's price in prospects, and Halladay, who has a no-trade clause, would have to approve the deal."

12:39pm: SI.com's Jon Heyman tweets that the Phillies are still the favorites to land Halladay. He hears that the Angels want to keep their prospects while the Rangers don't have the money to bring Doc aboard.

9:25am: Add the Brewers to the mix of teams who've talked to the Blue Jays about All Star Roy Halladay. Tom Haudricourt of The Journal Sentinel spoke to GM Doug Melvin, who confirmed that he did have a conversation with Toronto, but wouldn't go into details. It was previously reported that the Brewers weren't likely to part with top prospects Mat Gamel and Alcides Escobar, a point that was reiterated by Melvin.

Bill Shaikin of The LA Times reports that the Angels have pursued Halladay as well, but "club officials are not confident they can satisfy the Blue Jays in a trade." He says the Halos would consider parting with Brandon Wood, but would be hesitant to include one of their young Major League pitchers in a deal.
