Minor MLB Transacations: 5/26/19

Here are the latest minor moves from the baseball world…

  • The Blue Jays outrighted left-handed pitcher Ryan Feierabend to Triple-A, per Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet. The knuckleballer cleared waivers after he was designated by Toronto on Friday. In two outings for the Blue Jays, including one start, Feierabend was largely ineffective, conceding seven runs in 5 2/3 innings, including two home runs.
  • Mets relievers Paul Sewald and Tim Peterson, each of whom was designated for assignment, have also cleared waivers and were outrighted to Triple-A, tweets Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. Control was an issue for Peterson, who walked six batters in his five appearances. Sewald misses a decent amount of bats, but is the owner of a mediocre 5.18 career ERA.
  • The Tigers claimed 32-year-old right-handed pitcher Austin Adams, who had been designated by the Twins. According to Evan Woodbery of MLive Media Group, Adams was subsequently placed on the active roster, replacing left-handed pitcher Matt Hall, who was optioned today after spending just one day with the Major League club.

Mets Injury Notes: Nimmo, Conforto, Lowrie

  • Brandon Nimmo’s neck injury – initially described by the club as “stiff” and “inflamed” – is actually far graver, relays MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo. The 26-year-old is suffering from a bulging cervical disc that’s “pushing” on a nerve in his neck, and he’s also dealing with the aftermath of whiplash, presumably suffered during a collision with the center-field wall in an April 14 game vs. Atlanta. Nimmo is “relieved” to have been issued a firm diagnosis, though there’s currently no timetable for his return. It’s a been rough ’19 go for the Wyoming-born outfielder, who’s slumped to a .200/.344/.323 line over 161 plate appearances thus far. The former first-rounder has maintained his sky-high walk rates from the two seasons prior, though – his 16.1% mark currently ranks tenth among all MLB regulars – so the slow start could simply be a function of poor balls-in-play luck, or the vagaries of small-sample baseball at large.
  • DiComo also provides an update on the concussed Michael Conforto, he of the staunch .271/.406/.521 line thus far, who appears set to return before Sunday’s game against Detroit. It’s a huge sigh of relief for an organization in desperate need of some left-handed thump, and one that seemed unlikely to transpire so soon. Perhaps the league’s most underrated hitter, Conforto has followed up a sizzling second half last season with a top-20 wRC+ in the first two months thus far. He’s upped his walk rate to a career-best 16.7% (good for 6th in MLB) and slashed his K rate over 3%, to a quite respectable (and below league-average) 21.7%. The 26-year-old has had periodic issue with staying healthy, but a full season on the field at this pace should place the former first-rounder right in line with the league’s elite.
  • Infielder Jed Lowrie is still “a ways away,” per manager Mickey Callaway (h/t to the New York Post’s Mike Puma). The 35-year-old, who signed a two-year, $20MM pact with New York in the offseason, has long been beset by injuries of various type throughout his 12-year big-league career. Ailments cut short each of his 2009, ’10, ’11, ’12, ’15, and ’16 seasons, and there appears to be no concrete timetable for his return in ’19. Lowrie’s on the heels of back-to-back excellent seasons with Oakland, though the aging curve is especially cruel for second basemen, and doubly so when they’ve accumulated a host of lower-body maladies over the the course of a career.

NL East Notes: Hammer, Ross, Bourque, Sobotka, Wilson

With sidearmer Pat Neshek headed to the injured list, the Phillies have selected the contract of J.D. Hammer to take his place, per Matt Breen of the Philadelphia Inquirer. Breen also points out a fun bit of trivia regarding these two, as this is actually the second time Neshak has cleared out for Hammer in Philly. Hammer first came to the Phillies (along with two others) in a 2017 deadline deal that sent Neshek from the Phillies to the Rockies (Twitter links). Hammer has a 1.61 ERA between Double-A and Triple-A so far this season, though most of his time has been in Reading. In fact, Hammer is now primed to make his major league debut as just one appearance in Triple-A.

  • The Nationals continue recent tinkering of their bullpen personnel. Though their relief crew has been an unmitigated disaster, recent moves have been prompted largely by injuries to Anibal Sanchez and Jeremy Hellickson. With both Erick Fedde and Kyle McGowin taking a turn in the rotation, the Nationals are bringing in another fresh arm to help their beleaguered pen. James Bourque gets set to make his major league debut in Washington, while Joe Ross will be sent to Triple-A Fresno, per Jesse Dougherty of the Washington Post (via Twitter). Finally healthy, Ross has been unable to adjust to life in the pen, sporting a bad-even-in-Washington 9.22 ERA (5.87 FIP) over 16 appearances. The velocity has been there for Ross (94.1 mph) but the control has not (5.3 BB/9). Austin Voth will be the only pitcher left on the Nationals 40-man roster not to make an appearance with the big league club this season.
  • Speaking of bullpen troubles, the Braves actually lead the league in number of pitchers used in relief so far this season with 19, per MLB.com’s Jordan Bastian (via Twitter). Chad Sobotka, one of the nineteen, was activated from the 10-day injured list and optioned to Triple-A, per MLB Roster Moves. Sobotka earned -0.6 rWAR in just 13 appearances before his injury, pitching to an 8.25 ERA while walking 6.8 batters per nine innings.
  • In New York, Justin Wilson remains at least a week away from returning from elbow soreness for the Mets, per MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo (via Twitter). Wilson has resumed throwing activities, with the next step being mound work before likely getting a few days on a rehab assignment. Wilson, 31, had made 10 appearances, going 1-1 with a 4.82 ERA before hitting the injured list, but there’s little to glean from such a small sample size.

Carlos Gomez Hires MVP Sports Group

Veteran outfielder Carlos Gomez has hired MVP Sports Group to represent him, per MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo (via Twitter). Gomez had been with the Boras Corporation, which negotiated his extension with the Brewers and various ensuing free agent contracts.

Gomez, 33, has been a fixture in the majors since 2008, his first full season in the bigs. He debuted the year prior with the Mets, but ended up being shipped to the Twins in a major swap that altered the fates of both franchises. Gomez did not fully hit his stride until years later, when he broke out with the Brewers and enjoyed a brief spell as one of the game’s most productive outfielders.

Now, Gomez is back in New York. He inked a minors deal with the Mets over the winter and recently joined the MLB roster when an opportunity opened due to injuries. He’s playing well out of the gates, with three base knocks (including one well-timed home run) and three walks in twenty plate appearances.

There’s no reason to think that Gomez will ever revisit his days as a star center fielder. But he was a quality all-around MLB roster piece as recently as 2017, when he slashed .255/.340/.462 with the Rangers. If he can bounce back from a rough ’18 campaign and carve out a place on the Mets roster, Gomez could again be seen as a solid outfield target when he returns to the open market this coming winter.

Mets Sign Matt Kemp

6:07pm: The deal has been announced. Kemp is headed to the club’s spring facility at Port St. Lucie.

4:16pm: The Mets have agreed to a minors pact with veteran outfielder Matt Kemp, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic (Twitter link). Terms of the deal aren’t known; it’s pending a physical. Kemp opened the season with the Reds but was released recently.

It’s rather surprising to see the 34-year-old land in New York, though a spate of injuries has challenged the organization’s depth situation. Veterans Carlos Gomez and Rajai Davis had been camped at Triple-A to begin the year but were brought up to the majors to help fill in.

Kemp got off to a brutal start in Cincinnati, slashing just .200/.210/.283 with one home run (and just a single walk) in 62 plate appearances. He’s not much of a defender at this point of his career, so he needs to hit a fair bit to be a useful roster piece.

There’s certainly an argument to be made that Kemp would fit best on an American League team. For the Mets, though, this move is mostly about filling in the upper-minors outfield mix. It is still possible they’ll end up finding cause to bring Kemp up. Though he’s obviously no longer the star he was earlier in his career, Kemp did turn in a strong .290/.338/.481 slash in 506 plate appearances last year.

Mets Sign Ervin Santana

The Mets announced Friday that they’ve agreed to terms with right-hander Ervin Santana on a minor league contract. The deal is still pending a physical. Assuming he passes that test, he’d head to Port St. Lucie to begin building his arm strength back up.

Santana, 36, missed nearly all of the 2018 season after undergoing surgery to repair a tendon in his right middle finger just prior to Spring Training, and the Twins declined a $14MM option on him last November. He signed a minor league pact with the White Sox this offseason but was released after just three unsuccessful starts with the team.

Despite the poor showing in 2018-19, Santana was a consistently and perhaps quietly effective mainstay in the Twins’ rotation in the preceding three seasons. From 2015-17, he pitched to a 3.47 ERA with 7.2 K/9 against 2.7 BB/9 and even was named to the American League All-Star team in 2017. That year, he racked up 211 1/3 innings, tossed five complete games (three shutouts) and finished out the season with a strong 3.28 earned run average.

The Mets’ rotation hasn’t performed as well as hoped in 2019, and while no one would reasonably expect Santana to return to his 2017 levels, he could eventually push Jason Vargas for the fifth spot in the rotation. He’s gone more than a month without pitching since being cut loose by the ChiSox, so he’ll need some time to build up, though. If nothing else, he’ll eventually serve as a depth option in the event of an injury at the big league level. New York has been using Wilmer Font in that role but has received just 10 1/3 innings of 7.84 ERA ball in three starts since trading a low-level minor leaguer for him.

Yoenis Cespedes Undergoes Season-Ending Surgery

The Mets announced Thursday that Yoenis Cespedes underwent surgery and is expected to miss the remainder of the 2019 season. Cespedes recently suffered multiple fractures in his right ankle after falling at his ranch in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Presumably, today’s procedure was tied to that injury, although the Mets’ press release did not specify anything beyond the simple fact that Cespedes had surgery.

Cespedes was never a lock to contribute to the Mets this season anyhow after undergoing surgery to alleviate calcification in both of his heels in 2018. The latter of those two surgeries was performed early in the offseason, and neither Cespedes nor the Mets had put a firm timeline on his recovery. This new injury renders any speculation about his recovery from heel surgery moot.

Now 33 years of age, Cespedes has only played in 119 games for the Mets since re-signing a four-year, $110MM contract in free agency. That deal wasn’t viewed as any sort of albatross at the time — Cespedes was coming off a .282/.348/.554 showing in 792 prior plate appearances with the Mets from 2015-16 — but injuries have turned the deal into a regrettable one. Cespedes has unquestionably been excellent when on the field in 2017-18, hitting .282/.343/.525 with 26 homers, but the Mets will get just 478 plate appearances out of him in the first three seasons of that nine-figure contract. It’s reportedly insured to an extent, so they won’t be out the full $29MM he’s owed in 2019, but it’s nevertheless an awful outcome for the club.

In an ideal world, Cespedes would be healthy and ready to go for Spring Training 2020, but the Mets didn’t offer any update on a potential timeline for his return. He’s owed $29.5MM next season in the final year of his contract.

Mets Claim Aaron Altherr, Designate Tim Peterson For Assignment

The Mets announced Thursday that they’ve claimed outfielder Aaron Altherr off waivers from the Giants and designated right-hander Tim Peterson for assignment in order to open a spot on the 40-man roster. Altherr, who is out of minor league options, will be added directly to the Mets’ roster after today’s game. He’ll step into a depleted outfield mix that is currently without Michael Conforto, Brandon Nimmo or Jeff McNeil, each of whom is on the injured list.

Altherr, 28, has spent the majority of his career with the division-rival Phillies, but Philadelphia ultimately had to designate him for assignment earlier this month due to a lack of playing time and his lack of options. He briefly landed with the Giants and appeared in all of one game with one plate appearance before his second DFA of the season. Given that the Mets have a whole outfield on the IL at the moment but none of the three is seriously injured, it’s possible that Altherr’s stay with his new organization will also be brief (though it’ll surely be longer than his Giants tenure).

Altherr has had an up-and-down career with the Phillies, showing great promise on multiple occasions but also battling frequent injuries that, at times, hampered his ability at the plate. He hit .241/.338/.489 through 161 plate appearances as a rookie in 2015 and .272/.340/.516 in 412 plate appearances in 2017. Altherr, however, posted miserable seasons at the plate in both 2016 (.587 OPS, 59 OPS+) and 2018 (.628, 68 OPS+), and he’s off to a 1-for-30 start so far in 2019. He possess an enticing blend of power and speed, but he’s also prone to strikeouts and prolonged slumps at the plate.

Peterson, also 28, has a 5.56 ERA and a 28-to-11 K/BB ratio through 34 MLB innings — 6 1/3 of which came earlier this season. An extreme fly-ball pitcher who doesn’t throw especially hard, Peterson hasn’t missed many bats at the MLB level but has a 3.90 ERA with 11.0 K/9 against 2.1 BB/9 in 60 innings at the Triple-A level. He currently has a 2.89 ERA and a 16-to-2 K/BB ratio in 18 2/3 innings with the Mets’ affiliate in Syracuse. He’s a pure reliever who also has a minor league option remaining beyond the 2019 season, so it’s possible another club could view him as some optionable bullpen candidate.

Mets Place Robinson Cano, Jeff McNeil On Injured List

The Mets have placed infielder Robinson Cano and infielder/outfielder Jeff McNeil on the 10-day injured list due to a quad strain and a hamstring strain, respectively, manager Mickey Callaway said prior to today’s series finale against the Nationals. Taking their place on the active roster will be infielder Luis Guillorme and left-hander Ryan O’Rourke, each of whom has been recalled from Triple-A Syracuse.

Injuries continue to mount in Queens, where the Mets now have Cano, McNeil, Brandon Nimmo and Michael Conforto all on the injured list (in addition to Jed Lowrie and Yoenis Cespedes — neither of whom has played a game in 2019). The Mets have also been without Jason Vargas for three weeks — though Callaway noted that he is lined up to return this weekend — and recently lost key righty Seth Lugo to a shoulder issue.

With Cano and McNeil hitting the shelf and Lowrie still inactive, the Mets’ top three options at second base are all temporarily out of the picture. Presumably, Adeiny Hechavarria and the aforementioned Guillorme will split time there. Other infield options such as Todd Frazier and J.D. Davis lack any real experience at the position (beyond 38 games from Frazier a decade ago in the minors).

The Mets’ entire Opening Day outfield is now on the injured list with McNeil out of commission for the time being. They’re left with defensive standout Juan Lagares and minor league signees Carlos Gomez and Rajai Davis, each of whom returned to the Majors within the past week. Each of that trio can handle all three outfield spots, so while the Mets currently don’t have a conventional fourth outfielder on the roster, they can mix and match between that threesome and J.D. Davis, who has experience in the outfield corners, when filling out the lineup card on a daily basis.

Robinson Cano Leaves Game Due To Left Quad Tightness

Mets second baseman Robinson Cano made an early exit from Wednesday’s game due to what the team described as left quad tightness, according to multiple reports.  After grounding out to end the third inning, Cano seemed pained after running to first base, and Adeiny Hechavarria took Cano’s spot at second base to begin the top of the fourth.  According to The Athletic’s Tim Britton (Twitter link), infielder Luis Guillorme has been removed from Triple-A Syracuse’s game tonight, so the Mets could already be planning an injured list stint for Cano.

Losing Cano would represent the latest in a lengthy series of notable injuries for the Mets this season.  The position-player side is particularly short-handed at the moment, with Michael Conforto (concussion), Brandon Nimmo (stiff neck), and Jed Lowrie (hamstring) all currently on the injured list, and Jeff McNeil was also out of tonight’s lineup with what appears to be a fairly minor hamstring issue.

McNeil’s status is of particular import if the Mets are looking at an IL absence for Cano, as McNeil would seem to be the most obvious candidate to slide over to second base.  Neither Hechavarria or Guillorme offer much at the plate in regular second base duty, and while the outfield mix also isn’t exactly solid with Conforto and Nimmo sidelined, the Mets at least have some numbers in the form of converted infielders J.D. Davis and Dominic Smith, plus veterans Rajai Davis and Carlos Gomez.

An IL stint would be another disappointing turn in what has thus far been a rough return to New York for Cano.  The 36-year-old has hit only .241/.287/.371 in his first 181 plate appearances as a Met, with an 82 wRC+ that would stand the worst of his distinguished career.
