Unknown Team Claims Dunn

By Steve Adams | August 5, 2010 at 3:01pm CDT

Two days after being placed on waivers, Adam Dunn has been claimed by an unknown team, writes Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports.

While the report doesn't specify the claiming team's league, it seems nearly impossible to think that Dunn could pass through every team in the National League to make it to the American League.

As of today, Dunn should be owed the final $3.91MM of the $12MM he's making in 2010, a price that many contending teams could stomach for the slugger's line of .277/.365/.578 and 28 homers.

As Morosi points out, the claim (while entirely expected) does limit the Nationals' trade negotiations to just the one team. If an agreement can't be reached, he'll be pulled back and the Nationals will keep him through the season's end in order to collect two draft picks (Dunn ranks as a Type A free agent).

Dunn makes sense for several NL West teams, with the Rockies, Giants, and Padres all still in the thick of things. Keep in mind, it's unlikely that the Rox and Giants would allow Dunn to slip to the first-place Padres.

Odds & Ends: White Sox, Mariners, Lowell, Myers

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 3, 2010 at 8:45pm CDT

More links for Tuesday, as Mike Lowell returns to the Red Sox lineup and blasts a homer over the Green Monster…

  • White Sox minor league hitting coordinator Jeff Manto told Paul M. Banks of the Sports Bank that prospect Brandon Short has "some of the fastest hands we have in the organization," when discussing Chicago's prospects.
  • Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik told the AP that Don Wakamatsu is the team's manager for the foreseeable future. "We are trying to win baseball games with Don running the ship," Zduriencik said (link at CBS Sports).
  • The Red Sox told Lowell they won't release him, according to Alex Speier of WEEI.com (via Twitter). Speier notes that the Yankees were on Lowell's no-trade list (Twitter link).
  • The Astros wanted Ruben Tejada and Bobby Parnell from the Mets for Brett Myers, according to Peter Gammons (Twitter link).
  • The Mets released Ramon Ortiz Sunday, according to the International League transactions page. GM Omar Minaya signed the right-hander back in June.
  • Yahoo's Jeff Passan explains how Barret Loux is a casualty of the rule that guarantees teams a future pick if they fail to sign their first rounder. The D'Backs first rounder has an uncertain future after a failed physical.
  • MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo shows how some prospects have performed since switching organizations before the July 31st trade deadline.
  • Pat Andriola of FanGraphs explains the Nationals' choices with Adam Dunn, who hit waivers today.

Adam Dunn Placed On Waivers

By Tim Dierkes | August 3, 2010 at 2:07pm CDT

Nationals slugger Adam Dunn was placed on waivers today, according to ESPN's Buster Olney.  This was an entirely expected and standard move by Washington, as hundreds of players will hit the waiver wire this month.  Teams have 48 hours to make a claim on Dunn.  Once word of the winning claim comes in, things may get interesting, but there's a good chance the Nationals pull him back.

Nationals Rumors: Ramos, Capps, Dunn

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 2, 2010 at 6:16pm CDT

Nationals GM Mike Rizzo explained to Ben Goessling of MASNSports.com that he asked for specific players in potential deals and refused to make trades when clubs kept offering different combinations of players that didn't include the Nats' target. Here are other trade-related notes from Rizzo’s exchange with Goessling:

  • The Nationals believe Wilson Ramos will be an everyday catcher in the near future and have confidence that he could be a regular MLB catcher right now.
  • Matt Capps, the player the Nationals traded to obtain Ramos, will get a raise through arbitration next year, but the upcoming pay hike did not compel the Nats to move their former closer.
  • Rizzo says the club wasn’t looking to trade Adam Dunn, and “didn't find the value for him.”
  • The Nationals were not looking to make “a quantity deal” for multiple so-so prospects. Instead, Rizzo wanted impact players.
  • The deadline is fun for fans, but what about executives? Rizzo says he enjoys the trade deadline, since it’s “kind of fantasy baseball in the real world.”

Cafardo On Lee, Edmonds, Dunn, Kelly

By Luke Adams 2 | August 1, 2010 at 10:12am CDT

In this week's installment of his Baseball Notes column, the Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo breaks down the winners and losers of the trade deadline. His assessment includes a few surprises, such as praising the inactive Blue Jays for "not settling for pennies on the dollar." Here are the rest of the highlights from Cafardo's piece:

  • This year's deadline could make teams even less willing to include no-trade clauses in future contracts. Players like Derrek Lee and Roy Oswalt took advantage of their clauses, making it difficult, or in Lee's case impossible, for their respective clubs to move them.
  • Having said that, Cliff Lee "has made it clear" he wants a no-trade clause in his next deal, having played for four different clubs in the past two seasons. As the best pitcher available this winter, he should be in a position to make that demand.
  • The Brewers would like to keep Jim Edmonds around past this season if he's healthy and willing to return. It appears, however, that he's leaning toward retirement.
  • Had David Ortiz not turned his season around earlier this year, the Red Sox would have been one of the teams in on Adam Dunn before the deadline.
  • With the Red Sox' starting rotation currently full, a few teams thought Boston may part with Casey Kelly. According to Cafardo, the Sox may try to move Daisuke Matsuzaka when they feel Kelly is major league ready.

Adam Dunn Not Traded

By Tim Dierkes | July 31, 2010 at 3:00pm CDT

The latest on slugger Adam Dunn, who we learned yesterday is comfortable serving as a designated hitter for two months…

  • Dunn was not traded, according to many reports.
  • Rosenthal tweets that Dunn to the White Sox for Jackson and others is "far from over."
  • Edwin Jackson for Dunn is still possible, tweets SI's Jon Heyman, but the Nationals want another player or two.
  • One Nationals source tells Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports he thinks Dunn is staying.
  • The Giants are still checking in on Dunn but the Nationals still want Jonathan Sanchez or Madison Bumgarner, tweets Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle.
  • The Nationals are getting late interest in Dunn from new teams and longshots are being explored, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.
  • The odds of a Dunn trade are less than 50-50, tweets ESPN's Jayson Stark.  He adds that the Rays are not pursuing any bat aggressively.

Adam Dunn Rumors: Friday

By Tim Dierkes | July 31, 2010 at 2:25am CDT

The latest on Nationals slugger Adam Dunn…

  • The Giants are involved a number of pursuits, but do not seem serious about Dunn, writes Rosenthal.
  • The White Sox are once again saying that they're out of the Dunn sweepstakes, according to Rosenthal (Twitter links). Barring a mystery team, Rosenthal finds it hard to envision a Dunn trade.
  • The Nationals told teams that Edwin Jackson was key to obtaining Adam Dunn from them, according to ESPN.com's Buster Olney. Many teams tried to obtain Jackson, the White Sox got him and now the Nationals say they aren't so sure they want the righty. Obviously, teams are frustrated with the Nationals (all Twitter links).
  • The Nats are becoming frustrated as they try to obtain equal value for Dunn, according to ESPN.com's Buster Olney (Twitter links). Rival teams say that Washington's asking price is enormous.
  • Nats GM Mike Rizzo told MASNSports.com's Ben Goessling that he won't lower his asking price for Dunn (Twitter link).
  • Dunn says he'd be comfortable DHing for the rest of the year, according to multiple reporters, including Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post (Twitter link). That is music to the ears of White Sox, Rays and Yankees fans.
  • The Rays are convinced that the Yankees will acquire Dunn, Peter Gammons told WEEI.com. Gammons suspects that if the Nationals trade Dunn, the Yankees will acquire him. The Rays haven't given up hope, since they have had a special assignment scout watching Dunn all week, according to Ed Price of AOL FanHouse (Twitter link).
  • The White Sox remain in talks with the Nationals for Dunn even after the Edwin Jackson trade, write Rosenthal and Morosi.  Yahoo's Tim Brown tweets that the Nationals want Jackson in a Dunn trade, but the White Sox hope to keep him out of the deal.
  • The White Sox are focused only on Dunn and not Prince Fielder or Lance Berkman, tweets Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
  • Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports has heard varying opinions about whether the Yankees are truly out on Dunn.
  • Yesterday's Dunn rumors are tough to sort out, rife with conflicting reports.  The White Sox, Yankees, Rays, Giants, and Tigers were linked, though the Tigers might be out.

Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Berkman, Dunn, Dodgers

By Mike Axisa | July 30, 2010 at 9:23am CDT

On this date two years ago, Ichiro Suzuki picked up his 3,000th career hit with a first inning single against the Rangers. The hit was his 1,722nd in the big leagues, which came after he racked up 1,278 hits with the Orix Blue Wave in Japan's Pacific League. Including the postseason, the 36-year-old Ichiro has 3,456 career base hits to his credit, a staggering number no matter how you look at it.

Here is the latest from around the baseball blogosphere, a day before the non-waiver trade deadline…

  • Phoul Ballz spoke to Lakewood Blue Claws manager Mark Parent about Jonathan Villar's inclusion in the Roy Oswalt deal. Parent managed Villar this season.
  • Pale Hose Pariah looks at the trade value of Lance Berkman and Brad Hawpe.
  • River Ave. Blues wants to see the Yankees swing a trade for Berkman to be the team's designated hitter.
  • 1 Blue Jays Way breaks down to the Anthony Gose–Brett Wallace swap.
  • The Process Report tackles the Adam Dunn to the Rays rumor.
  • Meanwhile, SD Sports Net wants to see the Padres trade for Dunn.
  • Mike Scioscia's Tragic Illness explains why the Dodgers shouldn't add a starter before the deadline.
  • Pittsburgh Lumber Co. calculates Paul Maholm's trade value.
  • Scouting The Sally compares the trade value of top prospects Jesus Montero and Wilmer Flores.
  • Blogging From The Bleachers breaks down the various Cliff Lee hauls.
  • Bleacher GM steps into Dave Dombrowski's shoes for a little while.
  • More Hardball looks back at some terrible trades from the 1990's.

Adam Dunn Rumors: Thursday

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 29, 2010 at 11:10pm CDT

The latest on Adam Dunn, with more updates to come throughout the day…

  • The Nats are believed to have requested either Gordon Beckham or both Daniel Hudson and Dayan Viciedo in exchange for Dunn, tweets Heyman. That price was too high for the Sox, who told Beckham he wouldn't be on the move this week.
  • The price for Dunn is high, but not ridiculous, according to Heyman (via Twitter). The White Sox and Rays are still involved.
  • The Giants have minimal interest in Dunn at his current price, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports (Twitter link). Morosi notes that the Tigers are not pursuing Dunn.
  • The White Sox and Tigers have plenty of interest in Dunn, according to Heyman (on Twitter).
  • Three-way scenarios involving the Nationals, White Sox, Diamondbacks and Edwin Jackson are in play, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com (via Twitter). Rosenthal reported that such talks were underway earlier in the week.
  • The Rays are the favorites to acquire Dunn, according to one executive who spoke to Joel Sherman of the New York Post. The Giants are the only other team Sherman hears in connection to Dunn (Twitter links).
  • The Tigers are not pursuing Dunn, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports (Twitter link).
  • The White Sox are saying internally that they're out of the Dunn sweepstakes, according to ESPN.com's Buster Olney (on Twitter).
  • Earlier today, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reported that the Yankees are now out on Dunn. Joel Sherman of the New York Post explains that the Yankees would give up top prospects for a piece they need, but not for a luxury like Dunn. The Yanks lead the majors in scoring, so Dunn's bat is not an absolute necessity for the Bronx Bombers.

White Sox Acquire Edwin Jackson

By Luke Adams 2 | July 29, 2010 at 7:20pm CDT

12:01pm: The D'Backs announced they've traded Jackson to the White Sox for Hudson and pitching prospect David Holmberg.

11:54am: Jackson has been told he's been traded to the White Sox, tweets Yahoo's Tim Brown.

9:46am: Sox GM Kenny Williams has something big cooking, tweets Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times, and if he gets it done the Jackson deal is off.  Meanwhile USA Today's Bob Nightengale tweets that the Sox would pay all of Jackson's salary if the deal gets done.

AOL FanHouse's Steve Phillips says the White Sox would try to flip Jackson to the Nationals in a Dunn trade but would be happy to keep him.  MLB Network's Peter Gammons adds that the Nationals are "not that hot" for Jackson, though SI's Jon Heyman tweets that they love him.  Rosenthal tweets that the deal is in the Nationals' hands, but Hudson would end up with the D'Backs either way.  There's almost no chance Hudson makes his scheduled start tonight, tweets Cowley.

1:51am: If the two sides were to agree on a deal, the second prospect heading to the D'Backs would also be a pitcher, reports Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports (via Twitter).

1:14am: The White Sox are on the verge of acquiring Jackson, report Rosenthal and Morosi.  Chicago would send Hudson and another prospect to the D'Backs in the proposed deal.

12:26am: The White Sox are looking into acquiring Edwin Jackson from the Diamondbacks, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Although the Sox have been linked peripherally to Jackson for much of the week, reports to date have indicated that Chicago's only interest in the right-hander would be as a chip to facilitate a three-way Adam Dunn trade. Rosenthal suggests, however, that the Sox may be interested in acquiring and keeping Jackson, rather than flipping him.

While Chicago covets Dunn, they are becoming less convinced they'll be able to work out a deal with the Nationals before Saturday's deadline. As such, they've been focusing more on bolstering their starting rotation. Rosenthal writes that the Sox are exploring other pitchers in addition to Jackson, as they look to replace the injured Jake Peavy.

Peavy's current replacement in the rotation, Daniel Hudson, could be a key piece in a potential trade for Jackson, according to Rosenthal.
