Bobby Abreu

Reds Unlikely For Abreu, Sheets, Oliver Perez

By Tim Dierkes | January 19, 2009 at 4:48pm CDT

John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer talked to Reds GM Walt Jocketty, who is currently focused on hammering out one-year deals for arbitration-eligible players David Weathers and Edwin Encarnacion.

Fay inquired about free agents such as Bobby Abreu, Ben Sheets, and Oliver Perez.  Jocketty indicated that all three are out of the Reds’ price range.

Olney’s Latest: Manny, Abreu, Dunn

By Nat Boyle | January 18, 2009 at 9:40am CDT

Buster Olney reports that Scott Boras seems to be taking the same approach with Manny Ramirez as he did with Derek Lowe; that is, to wait.

Olney says "Camp Manny" is "waiting for some other team to be tempted by what Ramirez could do for them, waiting for an offer larger than that made by the Dodgers to develop."

The Dodgers are waiting as well. Olney reports they are not likely to increase their offer of 2 years, $45MM that was offered and promptly ignored in November. Also waiting for something to happen are Bobby Abreu and Adam Dunn. Should Manny wind up on the Giants, Abreu and Dunn may find themselves with leverage to negotiate with the Dodgers. Olney writes, "And given that Dunn and Abreu know that they can find homes at any time for one-year deals, there really is no downside for them to see how the Ramirez situation plays out."

Reds Predictions From John Fay

By Alex Walsh | January 17, 2009 at 4:00pm CDT

John Fay has taken a unique approach to generating some more offseason predictions for this weekend. Rather than offer up ideas on what the Reds might do, Fay thinks he’s more likely to be correct if he takes a few guesses at what they won’t do.

  • The Reds will not acquire a veteran shortstop; Alex Gonzalez and Jeff Keppinger should be up to the task. If healthy, Gonzalez should start over Keppinger, says Fay.
  • Joey Votto will not be traded this offseason. Fay quotes Jocketty on this one; says the GM, "No chance."
  • Micah Owings will not play the outfield. He’ll pitch, as he well should.
  • The Reds won’t sign a veteran outfielder to a multi-year contract. If the Reds do sign such an outfielder, like Bobby Abreu, the deal will be for one-year. With the economy the way it is, such a deal may become increasingly more favorable to a player like Abreu.
  • As for Adam Dunn and Ken Griffey, Jr., however, neither player will suit up for the Reds in 2009. While both of these outfielders may also become amenable to a short-term contract given the current market, says Fay, "the Reds are set on moving beyond the Griffey-Dunn era."

Heyman On Young, Pettitte, Dye, Cordero

By Tim Dierkes | January 13, 2009 at 1:22pm CDT

The latest from SI.com’s Jon Heyman…

  • It’s more likely that Michael Young will give in and move to third base than be traded.  Heyman runs through six (long shot) "potential contenders."  Most were addressed here, but Heyman adds the Yankees.
  • Yankees people believe there is less than a 50% chance of the team re-signing Andy Pettitte.  He could instead retire or sign with the Dodgers or Astros.
  • Heyman suggests Bobby Abreu or Garret Anderson for the Reds, noting that Abreu is probably too expensive.
  • The White Sox want "top pitching prospects" for Jermaine Dye, not necessarily big league-ready ones.
  • The Dodgers were among 12 teams who watched Chad Cordero throw on Friday.  The Mets, Twins, Brewers, Rangers, Tigers, Diamondbacks, and Nationals are among the other known attendees.

Dunn Back To Reds Unlikely; Reds Looking At OFs

By Ben Jones | January 12, 2009 at 6:57pm CDT

The Cincinnati Reds are still looking for outfield help, and a left-handed bat isn’t off the table.

Mark Sheldon of MLB.com wrote that much of the Reds’ search has focused on a right-handed bat, but since the market is drying up, the Reds are willing to look toward the other side of the plate.

“We’re open minded about it,” Reds general manager Walt Jocketty told Sheldon.

One slugger who could be on that list is former Red Adam Dunn, who was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks in August 2008, though Jocketty is pessimistic.

“I doubt it,” Jocketty told Sheldon when asked about the possibility of Dunn returning to Cincinnati. “Especially at the price he’s looking for.”

One name Sheldon listed was right fielder Bobby Abreu, but Jocketty said he hasn’t recently spoken with Abreu’s agent.

Perrotto’s Latest: Top 20 Remaining Free Agents

By Steve Adams | January 11, 2009 at 2:14pm CDT

John Perrotto’s latest Every Given Sunday column at Baseball Prospectus takes a look at the top 20 remaining free agents (sorted by WARP3 – Wins Above Replacement Player) and offers destination predictions and top suitors (or lack thereof in some cases) for each one. For those without a BP subscription, here’s a quick summary:

  • Manny Ramirez – Dodgers
  • Orlando Cabrera – Athletics
  • Derek Lowe – Braves/Mets/Cubs
  • Adam Dunn – Nationals
  • Bobby Abreu – Reds
  • Ben Sheets – Rangers
  • Orlando Hudson – Nationals
  • Andy Pettitte – Astros (at less than $10MM)
  • Jason Varitek – Red Sox (at less than $10MM)
  • Ty Wigginton – Astros
  • Ivan Rodriguez – Not much of a market, may have to take a minor-league deal with an invite to Spring Training if he’s not signed soon. Could he end up involuntarily retired, a la Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, and Mike Piazza?
  • Kevin Millar – Orioles
  • Mark Grudzielanek – Padres
  • Braden Looper – Brewers
  • Garret Anderson, Eric Hinske, Ray Durham, Jim Edmonds, Paul Byrd, Odalis Perez – All of them (with the exception of Byrd, who may retire) are drawing little to no interest and may be without a club on Opening Day.

Fay, Jocketty Discuss Reds: Baldelli, Abreu, Nady, Swisher

By Alex Walsh | January 10, 2009 at 2:04pm CDT

Once again, John Fay and Walt Jocketty have discussed some Reds offseason activity.

  • The Reds were very much in on Rocco Baldelli, and were offering about the same money as the Red Sox. In the end, it appears Baldelli made his choice based on geography. Of course, the Red Sox do have the better team, albeit in a much more difficult division.
  • At first, Fay interpreted this to mean the Reds now have $7.5MM available to spend; however, when asked, Jocketty said that might not be true.
  • Fay suggests Bobby Abreu might fill some team needs. According to Jocketty, "He’s still looking for a big contract," and thus, Jocketty says he’s "not sure he’s a fit."
  • Fay holds to the theory that the Reds and Yankees could match up well, with Xavier Nady and Nick Swisher being mentioned specifically.

Crasnick On Abreu, Eckstein, Bloomquist, Lowry

By Tim Dierkes | January 6, 2009 at 3:45pm CDT

ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick has a bunch of new info.

  • The Braves’ interest in Bobby Abreu is described as "lukewarm at best."  And he’d have to be a huge bargain for the Mets to get involved.  Abreu’s agent has his work cut out for him.
  • Two middle infield possibilities for the Royals: David Eckstein and Willie Bloomquist.  The Royals also considered Jerry Hairston Jr., but are concerned with his health record.  Also, Dayton Moore continues to deal with payroll limitations.
  • The Rangers are "keeping an eye on" Giants starters Noah Lowry and Jonathan Sanchez.  Lowry had arthroscopic elbow surgery in September.

Odds and Ends: Burrell, Bradley, Abreu

By Tim Dierkes | January 6, 2009 at 12:13am CDT

Links for Tuesday…

  • RotoAuthority asks for your #1 fantasy baseball bust for 2009.
  • Keith Law calls the Pat Burrell signing a "major bargain," panning the Raul Ibanez contract by comparison.  River Ave. Blues says the recent Burrell and Milton Bradley deals prove that Brian Cashman was wise not to offer arbitration to Bobby Abreu.
  • Will the Rays have enough money to re-sign Rocco Baldelli now?  Buster Olney still thinks he will land with Boston.
  • Gordon Edes says Jim Hendry had a stealth dinner with Bradley during the November GM Meetings.  Edes adds that the Cubs believe Derek Lowe is too expensive.
  • Cool story about a guy trying to get an autograph on each card in the 1983 Fleer baseball card set.
  • Baseball America’s Jim Callis has the updated ’09 draft order.  Callis also weighs in on the broken free agent compensation system, which is up for discussion after the 2011 season.
