Matt Holliday Rumors: Thursday

By Tim Dierkes | November 6, 2008 at 5:10pm CDT

5:10pm: Joe Strauss says the Cards are in on Holliday; Ryan Ludwick could be part of the package.  Strauss says the Cardinals would have interest in signing Holliday to an extension.  Tracy Ringolsby says the Cardinals have taken an aggressive approach, and also mentions Ludwick.  He adds that GM John Mozeliak would need ownership approval to acquire Holliday.

4:53pm: The latest on Matt Holliday: SI.com’s Jon Heyman says the Phillies are the most aggressive suitor.  The Phils do have the goods to get it done, especially with the suggestion this morning that the Rockies might be willing to take a bit less.

Meanwhile, Troy E. Renck continues to suggest the Phillies and A’s are the most likely suitors for Holliday.  He reiterates that the Rockies are open-minded on the return.

Rockies Rumors: Holliday, Taveras, Atkins

By Tim Dierkes | November 6, 2008 at 4:54pm CDT

4:54pm: More Rockies chatter from Troy Renck.  The Rockies intend to sort out the Holliday/Atkins trade situations before moving on to other concerns such as the bullpen.  They do like the idea of bringing Jeremy Affeldt back, though.  Renck has the Twins and Indians kicking the tires on Atkins, while Tracy Ringolsby believes Michael Cuddyer could be a fit for Colorado.

11:18am: The latest Rockies buzz…

  • Buster Olney says the Rockies are very motivated to move Matt Holliday.  Olney wonders if the Rox might end up taking a bit less than expected for him.  Troy Renck says various execs see the A’s and Phillies as the most likely matches for Holliday.  The Rays are another possibility.  GM Dan O’Dowd will be open-minded about the return.
  • Renck also says the White Sox have contacted the Rockies about Willy Taveras.
  • Renck talked to the agent for Doug Brocail, Brandon Lyon, and Kyle Farnsworth.  All three are open to pitching in Colorado.
  • Tracy Ringolsby says the Rockies have had "initial talks" with the Twins regarding Garrett Atkins.  He wonders if the Angels could jump in later.
  • Ringolsby suggests Brad Penny would be an interesting candidate for the Rockies.

Hideki Matsui-Mariners Rumor

By Tim Dierkes | November 5, 2008 at 11:21pm CDT

From Yahoo’s Tim Brown:

One source mentioned a potential three-way deal that would send outfielder Hideki Matsui from the New York Yankees to the Seattle Mariners for a pitching prospect, perhaps Ryan Rowland-Smith. The Yankees would package the prospect with second baseman Robinson Cano and another young player to the Rockies for Matt Holliday.

Matsui has a full no-trade clause.  He’s owed $13MM next year, the last of his deal.  He hit .294/.370/.424 this year in 378 plate appearances, missing much of the season with knee problems.  He now has two surgically repaired knees, so he’s questionable to play the outfield.

At any rate, it doesn’t seem like the Yankees would seriously explore a Holliday trade unless Mark Teixeira signs elsewhere first.  And does it make sense for the Mariners to give up a young pitcher and take on a risky DH like Matsui?

Matt Holliday Rumors: Wednesday

By Tim Dierkes | November 5, 2008 at 8:40pm CDT

8:40pm: Rockies GM Dan O’Dowd says he is "completely open-minded to anything" in a Holliday deal – a premium starter is not a requirement.

2:38pm: Renck says the Rockies have talked to the Rays about Holliday, as the Rays have an abundance of pitching.  He also believes the Rays might be willing to give up Carl Crawford for Holliday.

9:54am: According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, there is too much momentum toward a Matt Holliday trade for the Rockies to turn back now.  Sherman figures a deal could go down in December.  He notes the Rockies’ appreciation of Yankees pitcher Ian Kennedy, though he wouldn’t be the centerpiece of a trade.

Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post did an exclusive interview with Holliday, who questioned the Rockies’ ability to contend every year.  Holliday disputed the notion that his contract talks with the Rockies were a distraction to the team.

Heyman’s Latest: Holliday, Bradley, Hudson

By Tim Dierkes | November 4, 2008 at 7:49pm CDT

SI.com’s Jon Heyman reports from the GM meetings…

  • Matt Holliday showed up at the GM meetings to talk to Scott Boras, sparking trade speculation by reporters.
  • The Rangers failed to reach an agreement with Milton Bradley, and he’ll seek a four-year deal worth more than $10MM per.  Good luck with that.
  • Heyman says the Nationals are interested in Mark Teixeira and Matt Holliday, which MLB.com’s Bill Ladson first reported yesterday.  It does not seem that the Nats have the goods to acquire Holliday.  Heyman adds A.J. Burnett as a possibility, though Ken Rosenthal said to scratch them from the running this morning.  Adam Dunn is a more realistic name for the Nats.
  • The Angels haven’t ruled out signing Teixeira and C.C. Sabathia, though it’d be tough to fit both in the payroll.
  • The Yankees are eyeing Orlando Hudson, and could even ask him to play center field.  Nick Piecoro figures this would require an absurd offer from the Yanks.

Rockies Rumors: Holliday, Atkins, Podsednik

By Tim Dierkes | November 4, 2008 at 9:33am CDT

Let’s check in on the Rockies next.

  • Matt Holliday may be selling his Denver-area home, not that it means anything.  Tracy Ringolsby has the Nationals, Rays, Cardinals, and Mets as teams interested in Holliday.  Meanwhile, Troy E. Renck explores a Yankees scenario.
  • Renck can’t see the Rox trading both Holliday and Garrett Atkins.  Ringolsby says the Angels are more interested in Atkins than Holliday.  Renck has the Indians and Twins as suitors for Atkins.
  • Scott Podsednik is open to returning to the Rockies, and they could have a place for him if Willy Taveras is dealt.
  • Renck expects the Rockies to be in on Carl Pavano if the Yankees don’t re-sign him.

Rosenthal’s Latest: Fielder, Beimel, Eckstein

By Tim Dierkes | November 4, 2008 at 8:30am CDT

Ken Rosenthal is on the scene at the GM meetings, and as usual has all kinds of new info.

  • The Brewers are unlikely to trade Prince Fielder, and reluctant to trade J.J. Hardy or Alcides Escobar.  It’d be smart to retain those three players.
  • Rosenthal still likes the Braves as the favorite for Jake Peavy, but wonders if the Cubs or another team could incorporate a third team to get it done.
  • The Cubs will need to spend much of their available money on pitching, which may leave little payroll room for an outfielder like Bobby Abreu.  They could backload contracts and move some of Jason Marquis’ salary though.
  • The Mets are interested in lefty reliever Joe Beimel, as well as usual suspects Francisco Rodriguez, Brian Fuentes, and Kerry Wood.  They also like Raul Ibanez.
  • The Cardinals could move forward with a Ryan Ludwick/Colby Rasmus/Rick Ankiel outfield, or trade one of them.  Ankiel, entering his contract year, seems most likely to go if Rasmus is ready.
  • David Eckstein is marketing himself as a second baseman for 2009.
  • Don’t look for the Phillies to move Shane Victorino in a Matt Holliday deal.
  • The Cardinals and Nationals are not contenders for A.J. Burnett.  Still no word on Burnett’s opt-out.
  • The Marlins may wait until some of the top free agent starters sign before shopping Scott Olsen.

Rockies Shopping Holliday, Atkins, Taveras

By Tim Dierkes | November 3, 2008 at 9:11pm CDT

9:11pm: According to David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Braves are not interested in Taveras after all.

10:47am: According to Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post and Tracy Ringolsby of the Rocky Mountain News, the Rockies are shopping Matt Holliday, Garrett Atkins, and Willy Taveras.

Holliday, a Scott Boras client, is set to earn $13.5MM in 2009 before reaching free agency.  Ringolsby says the Yankees, Red Sox, Rays, Angels, Mets, and Phillies have shown interest. Renck has the Cardinals as a lurker.  The Nats may also be interested.  The Rockies will target young pitching in return.

Atkins is under team control for 2009 and 2010.  Ringolsby has the Yankees, Red Sox, Rays, Angels, Mets, Phillies, White Sox, and Twins as interested parties.  Renck sees the Indians as another possibility.

Taveras is also under team control through 2010.  Ringolsby says the Royals, Yankees, White Sox, and Braves are in on him, while Renck adds the Nationals.

Phillies’ Offseason Agenda

By Tim Dierkes | November 3, 2008 at 11:13am CDT

12:47pm: Scott Lauber has the latest from the Amaro press conference.

  • Manny Ramirez seems unlikely as a left field solution.  Execs surveyed by Jerry Crasnick felt the same.
  • Burrell switched to a Philly-based agent, and talks will begin soon with the Phillies.
  • Pat Gillick will remain with the Phillies as a paid consultant.

11:13am: The Phillies locked up Ruben Amaro Jr. as their GM through 2011.  Items on his to-do list:

  • Left fielder Pat Burrell could be back if he accepts a two-year deal.  Otherwise, the Phils will kick the tires on Manny Ramirez, Matt Holliday, and Magglio Ordonez.  Jim Salisbury also notes that the Phillies have long liked Rocco Baldelli.  They’ve also been linked to Garrett Atkins.
  • Cole Hamels and Ryan Howard are in for large raises through arbitration; Amaro may attempt to sign them long-term.
  • Salisbury sees free agent lefties Jamie Moyer and Scott Eyre re-signing.  Scott Lauber suggests the Phils don’t want to go beyond one year for Moyer, though.
  • The team had a $104MM payroll in ’08, and that is expected to increase.
  • The Phillies (along with the Tigers and Nationals) have interest in free agent utility man Pete Orr.

Nationals Looking For Cleanup Hitter

By Tim Dierkes | November 3, 2008 at 10:05am CDT

According to MLB.com’s Bill Ladson, the Nationals are looking for a cleanup hitter.  Their targets: Adam Dunn, Prince Fielder, Matt Holliday, and Mark Teixeira.

The Nats probably do not have the depth to pull off a trade for Fielder or Holliday.  Teixeira will command a contract in the $150MM range.  Of the four, Dunn makes the most sense.  He can be had for less than $100MM, and GM Jim Bowden has a history with him.
