Angels Acquire LaMonte Wade Jr.

The Angels and Giants swung a trade this evening, as San Francisco sent first baseman and outfielder LaMonte Wade Jr. to Anaheim in exchange for a player to be named later or cash. The Giants are sending cash to Anaheim as part of the deal alongside Wade. The Angels designated right-hander Michael Darrell-Hicks for assignment to make room for Wade on the 40-man roster.

Wade, 31, was designated for assignment by San Francisco last week. A ninth-round pick by Minnesota back in 2015, he appeared in 42 games for the Twins across the 2019 and 2020 seasons before being dealt to the Giants prior to the 2021 campaign. Wade immediately became a fixture of the Giants lineup, slashing .253/.326/.482 in 109 games for San Francisco in his first year with the club. Injuries limited him to just 77 games in 2022, but he bounced back in 2023 and ’24 to slash a combined .258/.376/.401 (120 wRC+) in 252 games for the Giants where he primarily played first base but also got occasional looks in the outfield corners and at DH.

In his final year ahead of free agency, Wade seemed likely to once again serve as a solid left-handed bat for the Giants who could be trusted to hold things down at first base while the club waited for the arrival of top prospect Bryce Eldridge. Unfortunately, that’s not how things played out. Wade failed to hit much at all in 50 games for the Giants this season, posting a putrid .167/.275/.271 slash line (59 wRC+). At least some of those struggles can be attributed to poor fortune on batted balls, as Wade’s .211 BABIP is down nearly 90 points relatively to what it had been during his previous four seasons with the Giants. With that being said, Wade was hitting for less power than ever before in his career, and even his .287 xwOBA was well below average. With San Francisco in the thick of the Wild Card race this year, they couldn’t justify continuing to wait around for Wade to get right and pulled the plug on him last week in order to bring veteran first baseman Dominic Smith into the fold.

For the Angels, the addition of Wade is an interesting one. The club already has a left-handed first baseman entrenched in an everyday job with Nolan Schanuel, who has done quite well for himself with a 119 wRC+ in his age-23 season so far. Notably, Anaheim’s announcement of the move referred to Wade as an outfielder, hinting that he might primarily find use in the corner outfield mix for the Halos going forward. That would be a sensible use for the veteran, given that the club’s current outfield group of Jorge Soler, Taylor Ward, Jo Adell, and Mike Trout hit exclusively from the right side. Wade could serve as a lefty complement to Ward in left field and Soler at DH once Trout resumes playing right field on a regular basis. In the short term, Wade can also provide the Angels with some additional coverage in the outfield in the event that Soler needs to head to the injured list due to a nagging groin issue he’s been struggling with in recent days.

Wade has always been best suited for a platoon role, as he’s a career .193/.288/.250 hitter against fellow lefties and has not collected a hit against a left-handed pitcher this year. Even the club’s depth and bench outfield options like Chris Taylor, Matthew Lugo, and Scott Kingery bat right-handed, which should give Wade a niche on the club’s roster. That should be a fairly safe environment for Wade to try and bounce back, as he can be more or less completely platoon protected. It remains to be seen if Wade can resume generating enough power to get his production anywhere close to the 115 wRC+ he posted with the Giants from 2021-24, but one encouraging sign is that his strikeout (20.9%) and walk (12.7%) rates from that timeframe are almost identical to his 20.7% strikeout rate and 12.4% walk rate this year.

That suggests that his skills haven’t regressed at least from a discipline perspective, and even if his power doesn’t bounce back it’s not impossible to imagine Wade being a roughly league average bat against righties going forward. That’s enough to make him a useful bench piece for a team with a heavily right-handed lineup like Anaheim, and they clearly though bringing him into the fold was worth absorbing at least a portion of $5MM salary Wade is making this year. It’s not yet clear exactly how much cash the Giants sent to Anaheim to offset that financial blow, but shedding even a portion of the first baseman’s salary is a win for San Francisco given that Wade would’ve been able to elect free agency and leave them on the hook for the full deal had he cleared waivers.

Departing the Angels’ roster to make room for Wade is Darrell-Hicks. The 27-year-old made his big league debut with Anaheim earlier this year and made six appearances, where he surrendered eight runs on ten hits while walking four and striking out six in 7 2/3 innings of work. That lackluster performance is fairly representative of his work at Triple-A Salt Lake this year as well, where he has an 8.87 ERA in 22 1/3 frames. That said, he’s just one season removed from posting a dominant season split between Double- and Triple-A, with a 2.60 ERA in 62 1/3 innings of work across 40 appearances. The Angels will have one week to either work out a trade involving Darrell-Hicks or else place him on waivers. If he passes through waivers unclaimed, Anaheim will have the option to outright him to the minor leagues as non-roster depth for the remainder of the year.

Angels Select Héctor Neris, Connor Brogdon

The Angels announced that they have selected the contracts of right-handers Héctor Neris and Connor Brogdon. Infielder Yoán Moncada was also reinstated from the 10-day injured list. In corresponding moves, right-hander Michael Darrell-Hicks and infielder Niko Kavadas have been optioned to Triple-A, while righty Touki Toussaint has been designated for assignment. The club had one open 40-man vacancy coming into today.

The Angels have been busy swapping in fresh arms to their bullpen lately. After some heavy bullpen usage on Thursday and Friday, Toussaint and Darrell-Hicks were called up on Saturday. On Sunday, the club got torched, losing 13-1 to the Tigers. Both pitchers took on some mop-up duty and have been swapped out for more fresh arms today.

Neris, 36 next month, just signed a minor league deal with the club a couple of months ago. He started the season on a minor league deal with Atlanta and made the Opening Day roster but was bumped off after two bad appearances. He elected free agency and landed a new deal with the Halos. He has since made four Triple-A appearances, allowing two earned runs with eight strikeouts and one walk.

The righty has a lengthy track record of major league success but has been more wobbly in recent years. In 2021, he had a 31.6% strikeout rate but that dropped to 30%, 28.2% and 24.6% in subsequent seasons. He was able to work around that with a 1.17 ERA in 2023 but that jumped to 4.10 last year, which likely led to him settling for a minor league deal with Atlanta coming into 2025.

Brogdon, 30, signed a minor league deal with the Halos in January. He has thrown 14 2/3 Triple-A innings this year, allowing 21 earned runs for an eye-popping 12.89 ERA. His 25.3% strikeout rate is actually pretty good and his 9.6% walk rate passable but he has allowed six home runs already in that span.

He was a solid major leaguer as of a few years ago but has been struggling more recently. He tossed 113 innings for the Phillies over the 2020 to 2022 seasons with a 3.42 ERA, 25.1% strikeout rate and 7.3% walk rate. But in 2023, his ERA jumped to 4.03, with a 20.5% strikeout rate and 10.2% walk rate. Last year was mostly lost due to injuries, with plantar fasciitis being the main culprit. The Angels presumably hoped to get him back on track but the Triple-A results so far this year have been mixed, to say the least.

As mentioned earlier, Toussaint gets bumped off the roster just a few days after being added. He tossed two innings in his lone appearance, allowing two earned runs on four hits and a walk while striking out three.

He should be placed on waivers in the coming days. Once a notable prospect, he has never been able to rein in his control enough to find success. In 282 1/3 major league innings, he has a 5.42 ERA, 23.1% strikeout rate and 47.6% ground ball rate but a big 14.1% walk rate.

Angels Select Touki Toussaint

The Angels announced a series of roster moves this evening, highlighted by the club’s decision to select the contract of right-hander Touki Toussaint. They also recalled right-hander Michael Darrell-Hicks to the majors. In corresponding moves, southpaw Jake Eder was optioned to Triple-A and left-hander Garrett McDaniels was placed on the 15-day injured list with left biceps tendinitis.

Touissant, 29 next month, signed a minor league deal with the Angels just before Opening Day. Once a consensus top-50 prospect in the sport with Atlanta after being selected in the first round of the 2014 draft by the Diamondbacks, Toussaint showed some promise in 2018 with a a 4.03 ERA and 3.78 FIP in his first 29-inning cup of coffee. In the six years since then, things have only gone downhill for Toussaint. The right-hander has spent his twenties bouncing between the Braves, Angels, Guardians, and White Sox organizations with well below average results at every stop along the way.

Since the end of that solid rookie season, he’s pitched to a lackluster 5.55 ERA with a 5.34 FIP. He’s struck out 22.7% of batters faced during that time but has combined that decent strikeout rate with a brutal 13.8% walk rate. More advanced metrics are equally skeptical of Toussaint’s abilities as a big leaguer, as shown by his career 4.88 SIERA. His most recent stint in the majors came last season with the White Sox, for whom Toussaint posted an eye-popping 7.43 ERA while walking 15.4% of his opponents. His stint in Chicago last year wound up lasting only 23 innings, but now he’s poised to return to the majors for a second stint in Anaheim.

Toussaint’s return to the majors comes at a time when the Angels have lost 15 of their last 19 games, skidding from a promising start early in the season to the second-worst record in the American League. Much of those struggles can be attributed to the pitching staff, which is bottom-three in ERA (5.22) and dead last in FIP (5.09). Toussaint figures to be tasked with helping out in a long relief capacity. While the right-hander has been lackluster all throughout his major league career, improving on the Halos’ current 6.60 bullpen ERA should be a fairly easy task for Toussaint to accomplish.

He’ll be joined in that effort by Darrell-Hicks, a 27-year-old who made his MLB debut with the Angels earlier this year. Darrell-Hicks already has a 6.75 ERA in 5 2/3 innings of work from his first five-appearance cup of coffee with the club in April. That actually matches his 6.75 ERA in 10 2/3 frames at Triple-A this year. Despite his lackluster performance in 2025, Darrell-Hicks turned in a fantastic season between Double- and Triple-A last year, with a 2.60 ERA and a 26.4% strikeout rate across 62 1/3 innings. The right-hander could be more of an asset in his latest call-up if he can pitch more like he did last season, though that’s of course no guarantee.

Departing the roster to make room for the new additions are Eder and McDaniels. Eder, once a well-regarded prospect in the Marlins system who went on to get traded to the White Sox in the Jake Burger deal before being dealt to Anaheim for cash, has a 7.71 ERA in three appearances for the Angels this year. McDaniels, meanwhile, made his MLB debut earlier this year and so far has a 5.91 ERA in ten appearances. McDaniels will be down for at least the next two weeks, while Eder heads to the minors to wait for his next big league opportunity.

Angels Designate Ian Anderson For Assignment

The Angels announced today that they have selected the contract of right-hander Carl Edwards Jr. and recalled righty Víctor Mederos. In corresponding moves. they optioned righty Michael Darrell-Hicks and designated righty Ian Anderson for assignment.

Anderson was just acquired from Atlanta prior to Opening Day. It was a one-for-one swap with lefty José Suarez going the other way. It seems neither club was particularly committed to the player it acquired. Suarez was designated for assignment by Atlanta on Monday and now the Angels have followed suit with Anderson just two days later.

The results from Anderson have not been good so far this year. A starter for most of his career, the Halos kept him in relief. He tossed 9 1/3 innings over seven appearances but he has allowed 12 earned runs in that time, with eight strikeouts and seven walks.

That performance has bumped him off the roster. Since he’s out of options, the Angels had to remove him from the 40-man roster entirely. They will now have a week to determine what’s next for him. The waiver process takes 48 hours, so the Angels could take up to five days to explore trade interest.

If any club wants Anderson, it would be based on his results from a few years ago. Over 2020 and 2021, he tossed 160 2/3 innings with the club, posting a 3.25 earned run average in that time. His 10% walk rate was a tad high but he also punched out 24.5% of batters faced and got grounders on 49.9% of balls in play. He also made four postseason starts in each of those seasons, helping Atlanta win the World Series in the latter season.

But it’s been rough sledding since then. His ERA jumped to 5.00 in 2022 and then he required Tommy John surgery in April of 2023, shortly after he had been optioned to the minors. He spent the rest of 2023 recovering. He returned to the mound last year and logged 68 innings over 15 minor league starts. He had a 3.44 ERA in those with a 23.8% strikeout rate, 10.1% walk rate and 51.9% ground ball rate.

He exhausted his options during that time, which has led to his current roster bubble situation. Perhaps he can find some club that’s willing to give him a roster spot and some time to get back on track. He hasn’t been good for a few years but health was at least part of that. He’s a former third overall pick, top prospect and even has some past major league success. If he lands somewhere, he has less than three years of major league service, meaning he could be retained for three years beyond this one.

As for Edwards, he’s a veteran journeyman. He actually signed with a Mexican League club in early March but the Angels signed him a couple of weeks later. He has tossed 11 2/3 innings over seven appearances for Triple-A Salt Lake with a 1.54 ERA. His major league career goes back a decade, with a 3.54 ERA in 280 innings, but it’s been almost two years since he was a regular. His 2023 season was ended by a stress fracture in his shoulder and he only made one appearance in the majors last year.

Last night, starter José Soriano only lasted 3 1/3 innings, forcing the Angels to lean heavily on the bullpen. That included Anderson and Darrell-Hicks, who have been swapped out for two fresh arms.

Angels Place Ben Joyce On 15-Day Injured List

The Angels placed right-hander Ben Joyce on the 15-day injured list Friday, prior to the club’s 14-3 loss to the Astros.  Joyce is dealing with inflammation in his throwing shoulder, and the IL placement is retroactive to April 9.  Righty Michael Darrell-Hicks was called up from Triple-A to take Joyce’s spot on the active roster.

Shoulder inflammation brought Joyce’s 2024 season to a premature end, as the reliever didn’t pitch after September 3.  Joyce posted a 2.08 ERA, 23.2% strikeout rate, 58.9% grounder rate, and 9.9% walk rate over 34 2/3 innings in between his June call-up and that September 3 date, establishing himself as a force out of the Angels’ bullpen.  While Joyce had the high grounder rate and modest strikeout total of a pitch-to-contact type of hurler, he is best known for being one of the baseball’s hardest throwers, as Joyce averaged an absurd 102.1mph on his fastball last season.

Joyce has such extreme velocity that it registered as unusual when his fastball was humming at “only” 99.3mph during his last outing, but something seemed amiss when he allowed three runs on four hits over just a third of an inning on Tuesday against the Rays.  Joyce told MLB.com’s Rhett Bollinger and other reporters that his shoulder was feeling fine during the game, and that he only started feeling sore while playing catch on Wednesday.

There isn’t yet any timeline for when the reliever might be able to return to action, though Joyce indicated that the IL placement was somewhat precautionary in nature.  He said initially, he “just kind of thought it was normal soreness, and ended up getting reevaluated and just a little more inflamed than we wanted it to be.  So [we’re] just trying to get ahead of it.”

The three-run meltdown against Tampa boosted Joyce’s ERA to 6.23 over 4 1/3 total innings this season, though he hadn’t allowed any earned runs in his four prior appearances.  The Angels have been using Joyce as a high-leverage fireman in front of closer Kenley Jansen, and so Joyce’s absence will essentially mean that everyone else in the Los Angeles bullpen might have to take a step up the depth chart.  Ryan Zeferjahn might be the favorite for the role out of default, as Zeferjahn is one of the few pitchers that has gotten off to a decent start within a tough couple of weeks for the Halos relief corps.

Angels Select Michael Darrell-Hicks, Release Hans Crouse

The Angels announced a trio of roster moves, including the news that right-hander Michael Darrell-Hicks’ contract was selected from Triple-A Salt Lake.  In corresponding moves, the Angels released right-hander Hans Crouse and optioned righty Caden Dana to Triple-A.

Darrell-Hicks wasn’t selected during his draft year in 2022, but he signed a free agent deal with the Angels and is now in the majors less than three years after his college career came to an end.  The 27-year-old became a full-time reliever in 2024 and had a 2.60 ERA, 26.44% strikeout rate, and a tiny 4.98% walk rate over 62 1/3 combined innings at the Double-A and Triple-A levels.  Most of that success came in Double-A as Darrell-Hicks’ ERA spiked upwards in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League, and the righty has a 4.15 ERA in four appearances and 4 1/3 innings of Triple-A ball this year.

MDH’s first taste of big league action will give the Halos a bit of extra bullpen depth.  Dana threw 56 pitches in a three-inning relief outing on Friday, and Ryan Zeferjahn also made an early exit from Friday’s game with hamstring tightness.  With two pitchers likely unavailable today, optioning Dana and calling up Darrell-Hicks gives Los Angeles a fresh arm to utilize in today’s game with the Guardians.

To add Darrell-Hicks to the 40-man roster, the Angels parted ways with Crouse, which is a little surprising given that the righty seemed to be facing an injury scare of his own.  Crouse left a Triple-A outing on Thursday after just four pitches, and there hasn’t yet been any word on his status.

Crouse made his MLB debut in the form of two games with the Phillies in 2021, and didn’t return to the Show until he posted a 2.84 ERA over 25 1/3 relief innings for the Angels last season.  His impressive bottom-line results were augmented by a strong 31.8% strikeout rate, though Crouse also had a 15.9% walk rate and some batted-ball luck in the form of a .231 BABIP.  His control issues continued into Spring Training this year and might’ve cost Crouse a shot at the Opening Day roster.

A second-round pick for the Rangers in the 2017 draft, Crouse was a prospect of some note during his time in the Texas farm system, cracking the MLB Pipeline and Baseball America top-100 prospect rankings prior to the 2019 campaign.  Crouse had big strikeout totals in the minors but his walk rate spiked big in 2023 before somewhat normalizing with Triple-A Salt Lake in 2024, which was his first year in the Angels’ organization.  Assuming first and foremost that he is healthy, Crouse figures to draw some attention from a team interested in his ability to miss bats.
