Nelson Figueroa

Odds & Ends: Dodgers, Figueroa, Rays, Martinez

By Mike Axisa | April 3, 2010 at 4:22pm CDT

Links for Saturday…

  • Rule 5 Draft pick Carlos Monasterios will make the Dodgers' Opening Day squad, writes Ken Gurnick of MLB.com.  However, Joe Torre will not announce whether the team will carry 11 or 12 pitchers until tomorrow.
  • Marc Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times (via Twitter) says to expect word that Elliot Johnson has cleared waivers and will stay with the Rays at their Triple-A affiliate.  Johnson, who was out of options, was waived by Tampa Bay earlier this week.
  • Righthander Nelson Figueroa was one of six players cut by the Mets, according to MLB.com's Bill Chastain. Figueroa is out of options and has been outrighted before, so he can elect to become a free agent instead of reporting to the minors if he clears waivers.
  • Victor Martinez doesn't feel he needs promises in his next contract that he will remain at catcher, reports WEEI.com's Rob Bradford. This morning we learned that V-Mart doesn't want talks about a contract extension to take place during the season.
  • Tracy Ringolsby of Inside The Rockies points out that the Rockies will start the year with the highest Opening Day payroll in team history, a cool $85,808,682.
  • Marc Carig of The Newark Star-Ledger tweets that Marcus Thames has officially made the Yankees' Opening Day roster. He could have opted out of his minor league deal if he didn't make the team out of Spring Training, but now he'll earn $900K for the season.

Odds & Ends: Dye, Mets, Lincecum, Vazquez, Colon

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | February 12, 2010 at 4:12pm CDT

Some links for your Friday afternoon…

  • Jermaine Dye mentioned to Frank Thomas that he's considering retirement, according to a tweet from CSN Chicago's Chuck Garfien.
  • Adam Rubin of The New York Daily News tweets the Mets' players that are out of options: Pat Misch, Anderson Hernandez, Nelson Figueroa, and Fernando Nieve. All four seem to be on the bubble.
  • ESPN.com's Keith Law says Tim Lincecum left "a lot of money on the table" this morning when he agreed to a two-year $23MM deal.
  • A number of unnamed GMs tell ESPN.com's Jayson Stark that they haven't figured out how to find good middle relief consistently.
  • Javier Vazquez tells Carlos Gonzalez of Primera Hora that he doesn't see himself playing until he's 38 or 39. Vazquez, 33, doesn't expect to retire this year or next year, though. (Translated by Nick Collias).
  • Bartolo Colon's agent tells Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports that the former Cy Young Award winner wants to pitch this coming season (Twitter link).
  • Tom Glavine tells David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he won't rule out a future as a pitching coach. Now it would be too much of a time commitment for him.
  • Ryan Rowland-Smith says via Twitter that he's glad the Mariners re-signed Mike Sweeney.
  • The Rays signed infielders Angel Chavez and J.J. Furmaniak to minor league deals and invited the pair to Spring Training, according to a team press release.
  • David Murphy of the Philadelphia Daily News shows that the Phillies have already made major commitments for 2011. They may not be able to re-sign Jayson Werth.
  • ESPN.com's Buster Olney reports that Russ Springer intends to pitch this coming season.
  • MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan has details on Khalil Greene's deal with the Rangers. The infielder makes $250K if he spends one day on the team's roster.
  • Neftali Feliz leads USA Today's list of 100 names we need to know.
  • Like most, Jack Moore of FanGraphs finds it hard to imagine 2011 free agent Derek Jeter finishing his career with a team other than the Yankees. One reason Moore believes Jeter's a fit in the Bronx: the shortstop's inside-out swing is perfect for Yankee Stadium.
  • MLB.com's Adam McCalvy guesses that Corey Hart's reps successfully compared their client to Jeff Francoeur and Josh Willingham. Hart won his arbitration hearing with the Brewers.
  • Jon Heyman of SI.com tweets that the Giants and Tim Lincecum went right to the door of their arbitration hearing this morning before settling.

Odds & Ends: Everidge, Lincecum, Lewis, Manny

By Tim Dierkes | February 3, 2010 at 9:23pm CDT

Links for Wednesday…

  • Tommy Everidge cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma according to the Pacific Coast League transactions page. The Mariners designated Everidge for assignment last week to make room on the roster for Eric Byrnes.
  • Various agents think the Giants and Tim Lincecum will somehow avoid an arbitration hearing regardless of how poorly talks are going, reports MLB.com's Chris Haft.
  • The Astros signed 18-year-old Nicaraguan first baseman Mesac Laguna yesterday, reports Roger Olivas of El Nuevo Diaro.
  • Free agent journeyman Nelson Figueroa hopes to return to the Mets but wants to avoid the minors, reports Angel Pinto Vaamonde of the blog BeisbolVenezolano.net.  Thanks to Nick Collias for translations on these two bullets.
  • Colby Lewis heard from 12 or 13 teams before signing with the Rangers, reports ESPN's Tim Kurkjian.  The A's and Twins also offered two-year deals.
  • Maury Brown of The Biz of Baseball explains how an arbitration hearing works.  Hearings are scheduled through February 21st, with Tim Lincecum's case drawing the most attention.
  • Manny Ramirez "seriously considered opting out of his contract to return to the American League for a designated-hitter role," reports MLB.com's Ken Gurnick.  The idea seems silly now, but in November it wasn't ridiculous to think Manny might've preferred to chase, say, a two-year, $32MM deal elsewhere.
  • Bill Shanks of Scout.com talked to Braves assistant GM Bruce Manno, who replied "Never say never" when asked about Johnny Damon.  Still, Manno likes the club as it stands.  And MLB.com's Mark Bowman believes the Braves are not actively pursuing Damon.
  • Rany Jazayerli examines a "delusional" quote from an anonymous Royals official regarding the team's 2008-09 offseason.
  • Dave Cameron of FanGraphs says the Blue Jays should have significant payroll flexibility after the 2010 season.
  • MLB.com's Anthony Castrovince doesn't see Orlando Hudson as a fit for the Indians.

Mets May Not Have Shot At Washburn

By Howard Megdal | February 1, 2010 at 6:12pm CDT

Mets fans are already in near-revolt mode, so the tweet from Jon Morosi that the Mets likely don't "have a real shot" at Jarrod Washburn will only stoke the fires further.

It isn't necessarily clear that the Mets should want Washburn, of course. He was a disaster in Detroit, posting a 7.33 ERA in 43 innings with unimpressive peripheral stats (16 walks, 21 strikeouts). Now 35, he's projected by ZIPS for a 4.59 ERA in 2010, though if his stint with the Tigers meant his production has fallen off a cliff, he won't approach that.

For comparison, ZIPS has Jon Niese projected with a 4.57 ERA, with Nelson Figueroa checking in at 5.06. While the Mets could have used some additional pitching, it isn't clear that Washburn is enough of an upgrade to justify a contract.

Odds & Ends: Valuations, Figueroa, Thome

By Tim Dierkes | April 23, 2009 at 9:18am CDT

  • Adam Rubin of the New York Daily News says Nelson Figueroa will refuse the Mets' assignment to Triple A and become a free agent.
  • Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports talked to Jim Thome about many topics, including his future and the Cleveland discussion with Manny.
  • Peter Gammons spoke to Yankees GM Brian Cashman yesterday at Southern Connecticut State University.  This AP article has a few tidbits, but let me know if you find a transcript.  Dom Amore of the Hartford Courant has a few quotes.
  • MLB.com's David Singh has the story of Darren O'Day's interesting day.

Rangers Claim Darren O’Day

By Tim Dierkes | April 22, 2009 at 1:44pm CDT

According to Ken Davidoff of Newsday, the Rangers claimed reliever Darren O'Day off waivers from the Mets.  O'Day's Rule 5 situation remains – the Rangers have to keep him in the Majors or offer him back to the Angels.

O'Day, 26, posted fine numbers at Triple A last year with a 3.27 ERA, 8.2 K/9, and 1.9 BB/9.

On the Mets front, Adam Rubin of the New York Daily News notes that pitcher Nelson Figueroa cleared waivers.

By Nat Boyle | April 19, 2009 at 9:36am CDT

Due to Mike Pelfrey's right forearm tendinitis, the Mets recalled Nelson Figueroa on April 18 and designated relief pitcher Darren O'Day for assignment, according to Brittany Ghiroli of MLB.com. Because O'Day was a Rule 5 Draft Pick, he has to be offered back to his original team, the Angels.
