Odds And Ends: Peavy, Mulder, Marshall

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | January 17, 2009 at 10:43am CDT

Links for Saturday…

  • Padres CEO Sandy Alderson repeated a line we've heard a lot this offseason about Jake Peavy: "I think Jake will be with us on opening day."
  • Buster Olney hears from some scouts who think Mark Mulder could be the "hidden gem" of this year's free agent class. Mulder's likely to throw for scouts within a couple weeks.
  • Richard Durrett points out that Ian Kinsler's the only Texas infielder who has played as many as 52 MLB games at his current position. Michael Young, Chris Davis and Elvis Andrus round out the infield. This is no doubt part of the reason they're interested in Omar Vizquel.
  • Rob Neyer suggests that Orlando Hudson's not getting the attention he deserves because his defense is undervalued.
  • Lou Piniella hinted that Sean Marshall has a good shot at being the Cubs' fifth starter.

Rosenthal’s Latest: Garcia, Perez, O-Dog

By | January 16, 2009 at 9:12pm CDT

A few quick notes from FOXSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal…

  • The White Sox, Rangers and Mets have strong interest in Freddy Garcia. Rosenthal believes he would accept a minor league deal if a team gives him a chance to start.
  • The Diamondbacks are not willing to pay the money that Oliver Perez desires.
  • Rosenthal notes that few teams have openly expressed interest in free agent second baseman Orlando Hudson and believes he could fall to the Nationals if large market teams give way.

Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Pirates, Hudson, Tigers, Braves, Dunn, Yankees

By Cork Gaines | January 16, 2009 at 12:17pm CDT

On this day 29 years ago, Albert Pujols was born. 2009 will be the sixth year of his eight year, $111MM deal (safe to say Cards will pick up his ’11 option). According to Fangraphs, Pujols has already been worth $151.9MM in the first five years of the contract ($30.4M per season), begging the question: How much will Pujols command following the ’11 season, when he will be 32? Last winter, Alex Rodriguez signed for 10 years and $275MM prior to his age 32 season. With less than a month to go before pitchers and catchers report, many players are still looking for their own new contracts. Let’s take a look at what is being written in the Blogosphere…

  • River Ave. Blues expands on Baseball Prospectus’ case against a salary cap and how small-market teams likely would not be able to support a minimum payroll.
  • Bucco Blog says the value of young talent has kept the Pirates from rebuilding. Instead, the team has spent the last two years restructuring and are now moving on to the next phase.
  • Jorge Says No examines the market for Orlando Hudson and feels the Nationals have to make a play for the second baseman.
  • The Detroit Tigers Weblog takes a look at who is still available to close for the Tigers in ’09.
  • Infield Chatter says the Braves were forced to overpay for Derek Lowe.
  • Braves Blast takes a look at the Braves offseason and what is left to do: adding an outfield bat and extending Chipper Jones’ contract.
  • On Baseball and The Reds takes a look at Adam Dunn’s value, with the numbers suggesting he is not worth much more than $20MM over four years.
  • Pinstripes Published makes a case for the Yankees acquiring Lastings Milledge from the Nats, while The Chuck Knoblog argues for Elijah Dukes.

Cork Gaines writes for RaysIndex.com. If you have a suggestion for this feature, Cork can be reached here.  This is by far the best way to get your blog linked on MLBTR.

Nationals Rumors: Young, Swisher

By Tim Dierkes | January 12, 2009 at 3:49pm CDT

Chico Harlan of the Washington Post has a few notes on the Nationals.

  • The Nationals and Rangers have had basic discussions about Michael Young, but Harlan says the Nationals will not be players for him.
  • So far the Nationals haven’t offered enough for Nick Swisher, but at the least he provides leverage to use on the team’s free agent targets.
  • Adam Dunn and Orlando Hudson remain of interest.  Harlan considers recent stories about their high prices to be posturing by the Nationals.

Odds and Ends: Andruw, Manny, Hudson

By Tim Dierkes | January 12, 2009 at 12:30pm CDT

Links for Monday…

  • David Chase lists the signs a pitcher may be primed for a breakout.
  • The Dodgers considered trying to void Andruw Jones’ contract, but waived possible action as part of their new agreement.
  • Dodgers assistant GM Kim Ng on the Manny Ramirez talks.
  • Michael Silverman explains why the Red Sox are not inclined to deal with Scott Boras.
  • Dave Sheinin talked to one exec who predicted a one-year deal for Orlando Hudson.
  • The Tigers signed Taiwanese lefty Fu-Te Ni.
  • The alleged Japanese interest in Eric Hinske may have come from the SoftBank Hawks, in November.
  • Pitcher win (and dollar) values are now up at FanGraphs.  Cliff Lee was worth $20.2MM in 2008.

Perrotto’s Latest: Top 20 Remaining Free Agents

By Steve Adams | January 11, 2009 at 2:14pm CDT

John Perrotto’s latest Every Given Sunday column at Baseball Prospectus takes a look at the top 20 remaining free agents (sorted by WARP3 – Wins Above Replacement Player) and offers destination predictions and top suitors (or lack thereof in some cases) for each one. For those without a BP subscription, here’s a quick summary:

  • Manny Ramirez – Dodgers
  • Orlando Cabrera – Athletics
  • Derek Lowe – Braves/Mets/Cubs
  • Adam Dunn – Nationals
  • Bobby Abreu – Reds
  • Ben Sheets – Rangers
  • Orlando Hudson – Nationals
  • Andy Pettitte – Astros (at less than $10MM)
  • Jason Varitek – Red Sox (at less than $10MM)
  • Ty Wigginton – Astros
  • Ivan Rodriguez – Not much of a market, may have to take a minor-league deal with an invite to Spring Training if he’s not signed soon. Could he end up involuntarily retired, a la Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, and Mike Piazza?
  • Kevin Millar – Orioles
  • Mark Grudzielanek – Padres
  • Braden Looper – Brewers
  • Garret Anderson, Eric Hinske, Ray Durham, Jim Edmonds, Paul Byrd, Odalis Perez – All of them (with the exception of Byrd, who may retire) are drawing little to no interest and may be without a club on Opening Day.

Nationals Showing Interest In Nady, Swisher

By Alex Walsh | January 10, 2009 at 2:21pm CDT

Bill Ladson of MLB.com says the Nationals are calling the Yankees about Xavier Nady and Nick Swisher. Nationals GM Jim Bowden’s alleged interest in these reportedly available outfielders should not surprise anyone.

Ladson says Nady has been a Washington target since last summer, as a potential stabilizing force at first base. The Nationals have indeed been frustrated with Nick Johnson’s lack of durability. Now Swisher is reportedly a possibility for the first base job, while Nady is seen as an upgrade in right field.

Also, confirming what many had suspected, Ladson notes that free agents Adam Dunn and Orlando Hudson "have exceeded the team’s price range."

Odds and Ends: Bradley, Roberts, Cruz, Smoltz

By Tim Dierkes | January 9, 2009 at 10:40am CDT

Links for Friday…

  • David Chase looks at fantasy baseball’s top strikeout pitchers.
  • The third year of Milton Bradley’s contract turns into a club option if he has serious health problems this year.
  • Two players expected to attend the Brewers’ open tryout this month: Randall Simon and Mark Bellhorn.
  • Dave Cameron looks at the premium teams pay for proven closers.
  • Bobby Valentine comments on the Orioles’ Koji Uehara signing in Dan Connolly’s article.  Within that article Connolly suggests the trade market for Brian Roberts may be suffering because of Orlando Hudson’s availability on the free agent market.
  • The D’Backs wouldn’t be thrilled, but the Yankees could sign Juan Cruz and only surrender a fourth-round pick.
  • Pirates GM Neal Huntington said the team is looking at some comeback-type free agent outfielders.  Dejan Kovacevic guesses that Emil Brown, Craig Monroe, or Jonny Gomes could fit the bill.
  • The Red Sox designated knuckleballer Charlie Zink for assignment.
  • J.C. Bradbury believes the Braves were misleading with the public regarding their offer to John Smoltz.

Nationals Discouraged On Dunn, Hudson, Wolf

By | January 8, 2009 at 5:26pm CDT

According to Bill Ladson of MLB.com, the Nationals will not sign any major free agents this offseason.

The Nats have fallen short on offers to Mark Teixeira and Milton Bradley, and aren’t intrigued enough by Adam Dunn or Orlando Hudson.  Ladson claims the organization will instead focus on their minor league system and look to trade for some young players.

Chico Harlan of the Washington Post says the Nationals are not out on Dunn, Hudson, and Randy Wolf, but they are discouraged about their chances given the players’ demands.  Harlan shoots down the idea of the Nats pursuing Derek Lowe.  In another post, Harlan says the Nationals have not had any formal talks with Tom Glavine’s agent.

Nationals Rumors: Wolf, Dunn, Hudson

By Tim Dierkes | January 6, 2009 at 4:32pm CDT

Rounding up Nationals rumors…

  • According to MLB.com’s Bill Ladson, the Nationals are interested in free agent lefty starter Randy Wolf.  The Mets and Dodgers are also known to be in on him, while we haven’t heard much about the Brewers, Cardinals, or Orioles lately.
  • The Washington Post’s Chico Harlan says the Nats want to acquire players who will still be in their primes in 2010 or 2011.  Adam Dunn and Orlando Hudson make sense, at the right price.
  • The Nationals aren’t interested in Xavier Nady and don’t believe they "have a legitimate shot at trading for Nick Swisher."
  • Odalis Perez remains under consideration, but isn’t a priority.
