Odds & Ends: White Sox, Mets, Millwood, Marquis

Another round of links…

  • According to Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times, the entire White Sox coaching staff, including hitting coach Greg Walker, pitching coach Don Cooper, bench coach Joey Cora and first base coach Harold Baines, received contract extensions Wednesday afternoon that will keep them all with the club through 2011.
  • The Dallas Morning News' Tom Cowlishaw believes Kevin Millwood's $12 million option for 2010, which vested Monday, is a fine deal.  "If you're general manager Jon Daniels or team president Nolan Ryan or manager Ron Washington and you're going to be judged next season by how much your team lives up to this overhyped notion that 2010 is the Rangers' year," Cowlishaw writes, "you need Kevin Millwood on that wall."
  • According to MLB.com's Carrie Muskat (via Twitter), Cubs players didn't find out about Milton Bradley's apology until his statement was released to the media Wednesday afternoon.  That certainly won't help the level of perceived sincerity.
  • Chip Bailey of the Houston Chronicle takes an early look at the Astros' plans for the upcoming offseason.  We're not expecting big things.
Troy Renck of the Denver Post gathered a reaction Wednesday from Jason Marquis on Jeff Francoeur's assumption that the free agent right-hander "would love to" pitch for the Mets in 2010.  “I hope there are a lot of teams that want a guy that can win 15 games and work 200 innings,” Marquis said.
  • As Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports, manager Jerry Manuel acknowledged Wednesday that the Mets need to add a reliable veteran catcher this offseason.  If not, they'll head into the 2010 season with Omir Santos and Josh Thole as their Opening Day backstops.

Red Sox To Pursue Aroldis Chapman; O’s?

7:12pm: It sounds like the Orioles will be quick to bow out if Chapman's price tag is driven up by high-budget bidders like the Red Sox and Yankees.  Here's Andy MacPhail, the O's president of baseball operations, courtesy of MASN's Roch Kubatko:

"I have not talked to [owner Peter Angelos] about it because I have no idea where this one is.  I haven't broached the subject with him because I am so uncertain as to the level of interest among other clubs because there will be a certain time where you measure the risk-reward."

"…If some of the big boys are going to go after him, like the Red Sox did with Dice-K, that's not a risk that I would be willing to take."

11:41am: Expect the Red Sox to have interest in 21-year-old lefty Aroldis Chapman when he becomes a free agent, according to Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald and ESPN's Amy K. Nelson.  The Yankees are also expected to be in the mix.  Will the Sox attempt to buy up all the hotel rooms in Andorra?

Chapman may be granted free agency before the playoffs.  The bidding could exceed $40MM, and Chapman could potentially sign before the regular free agent signing period begins.  Nelson talked to Chapman's agent Edwin Leonel Mejia, who plans to hold private workouts in Europe.  Aside from the Red Sox and Yankees, Silverman names the Angels and Rangers as likely suitors.  The Orioles were connected to Chapman in July, but the Baltimore Sun's Jeff Zrebiec didn't expect them to join a bidding war.  Mejia explained Chapman's preference to Silverman: "He simply wants to go with whatever team wants him the most."

Odds & Ends: Astros, Bradley, Rangers, Ramon

A fresh batch of links for Wednesday afternoon…

  • Richard Justice of the Houston Chronicle highlights some of the positives and negatives of the ongoing Drayton McLane era in Houston.  "This is his franchise," writes Justice, "and he's certainly no absentee owner. He's front and center for all the good and all the bad."
  • According to David Roeder of the Chicago Sun-Times, the IRS may be planning to challenge the Tribune Co.'s sale of the Cubs.  The Tribune is attempting to save about $300 million in capital gains taxes with the sale, but is also maintaining a 5 percent stake in the franchise.  So it's really more of a partnership.
  • Milton Bradley's mother, Charlena Rector, told the Sun-Times' Chris DeLuca Tuesday that her son is open to returning to the Cubs.  Of course, GM Jim Hendry and Co. probably don't want him back.
  • MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan lays out several facts regarding the sale of the Texas Rangers.  For what it's worth, Major League Baseball is hoping the sale price will be over $500MM.
  • As Adam Kilgore of the Boston Globe notes, Ramon Ramirez is extremely happy with the trade that brought him to Boston last winter.  “I love these guys,’’ the reliever said Tuesday. “It’s been great to be in Boston. I’m enjoying it. It’s been a good time. This is a great team.’’  He's done well for himself, too, posting a 2.67 ERA and a .227 BAA.
  • ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick highlights nine players who are, as he puts it, "at a career crossroads."  Among the names?  Delmon Young, B.J. Upton and Francisco Liriano.

Eddie Guardado Considering Retirement

Reliever Eddie Guardado is considering retirement, according to MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan.  Guardado, 39 in October, admitted he's "thinking about hanging it up," but left the possibility of another season open.

If he retires, Everyday Eddie will finish with a 4.32 ERA in 942.6 innings for the Twins, Mariners, Reds, and Rangers.  He also has 187 saves, 86 in 2002-03.  He's earned approximately $29MM in his career.

Odds & Ends: Greinke, Rangers, A’s, Yankees

Some more links for the afternoon…

  • Zack Greinke told WEEI.com's Alex Speier that he wouldn't have trouble pitching in any city except New York. The Cy Young contender sounds confident that he could thrive in other places, but suggested he might struggle if asked to pitch in the Big Apple on a regular basis.
  • MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan provides the names of some possible bidders for the Rangers. George Bush and Nolan Ryan don't appear to be candidates to buy the club.
  • ESPN.com's Rob Neyer says the A's could use some big bats next year. As Ken Rosenthal pointed out earlier today, Adam Kennedy's .767 OPS leads all A's with enough plate appearances to qualify for the batting title.
  • Matthew Pouliot of NBC.com's Circling the Bases continues to rank the offseason's top free agents. Carlos Delgado and Hideki Matsui place 40th and 36th, respectively.
  • As Peter Abraham of the Journal News points out, Andy Pettitte will probably earn about $5MM in incentives before the season ends. Earlier in the month Jon Heyman of SI.com predicted this would happen.
  • Abraham also notes that Johnny Damon, Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez were literally lined up to speak with Scott Boras at one point yesterday.

Olney On Bradley, Jays, Wood

ESPN.com's Buster Olney hears that the Rangers probably wouldn't welcome Milton Bradley back. Here's the latest on the now-suspended outfielder, along with the rest of Olney's rumors:

  • Olney says the Cubs will likely have to eat a huge portion of Bradley's contract to move him, perhaps as much as $18-19MM. The Cubs owe the 31-year-old $21MM over the next two years.
  • The Padres may be looking for a corner outfielder this offseason, so they could have interest in Bradley.
  • Olney says baseball people presume Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi will be fired. (What do you think?) If the Jays cut ties with their GM, Cubs scouting director Tim Wilken could be a candidate to replace him.
  • Clubs expect the Indians to consider moving Kerry Wood this offseason. Cleveland is rebuilding, so they'd presumably be happy to unload his $10.5MM salary.

Kevin Millwood’s 2010 Option Vests

Rangers pitcher Kevin Millwood retired Jack Cust as part of a Mark Ellis double play tonight, marking his 180th inning of the season.  The milestone caused his $12MM option for 2010 to vest.  Announcer Josh Lewin termed the force play "The $12 Million Out."  Millwood's recent skipped start had people wondering if the Rangers were trying to prevent the option from vesting, but team execs rejected the notion.  He was simply working through mechanical issues.

Millwood, 35 in December, had a 3.94 ERA and 109 strikeouts in 175.6 innings heading into tonight's start.  The Rangers negotiated his five-year, $60MM contract with Scott Boras after the pitcher's stellar '05 season.

Odds & Ends: Webb, Griffey, Hoffman

Odds & Ends: A’s, Villalona, Millwood, Bradley

A few links to peruse as the Cubs and Cardinals prepare to do battle on ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball…

  • A scout told the San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser last week that the A's "got smoked" on July's Scott Hairston deal.  As you may remember, Oakland sent pitchers Ryan Webb, Sean Gallagher and Craig Italiano to the Padres this summer for the 29-year-old outfielder.  An AL scout used the same terminology when speaking with Tom Krasovic about the deal earlier this month.
  • According to the Associated Press, Giants first base prospect Angel Villalona is the main suspect in the killing of a 25-year-old man in the Dominican Republic.  As Tim noted on MLBTR's Twitter feed this afternoon, "a 20 year sentence would probably affect" his prospect status.  Villalona, 19, hit .267/.306/.397 in 74 games this season at Single-A San Jose.
  • As Stephen Hawkins of the Associated Press points out, Kevin Millwood's $12MM option for 2010 will vest if he reaches 4 1/3 innings in his Monday start against the A's.
  • Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune has reaction from several Cubs regarding the suspension of teammate Milton Bradley.  "Sometimes you've just got to look in the mirror," said right-hander Ryan Dempster, "and realize that maybe the biggest part of the problem is yourself and (not) wanting to be here and play every day, and wanting to have some fun."
