Carroll: Andruw Jones, Mark Teixeira Rumors

Over at Baseball Prospectus, Will Carroll elaborates a bit on some rumored big names mentioned yesterday as trade candidates.

Carroll indicates that John Schuerholz is hard at work and a host of star players are emerging from the rumor mill.  We know the Braves have been shopping Adam LaRoche; Andruw Jones could be available as well if he'll waive his no-trade.  Available long-term CF options for Atlanta floated by Carroll: Rocco Baldelli, Curtis Granderson, and Nick Markakis.  The last two names are new to me; Markakis is probably capable of moving to CF.

As if that weren't enough, Carroll names Tim Hudson, Mark Teixeira, and Dontrelle Willis as other trade candidates.  I'm sure any such deal would be quite complicated.  As Buster Olney mentioned recently, it would probably make sense to trade Willis now before he gets injured or posts another uninspiring season.

I guess that St. Louis should trade Albert Pujols before he gets injured and posts lesser numbers too?

Dontrelle willis is the best left handed pitcher in the National League. He has never been injured and if you look at his trends you would expect a big year for him this year.

I could post you 20-30 links all stating willis isnt for trade including minaya, etc being quoted.

Never-the-less the braves need a CF, and the marlins do too. Obviously we arent going to get Andruw Jones in florida (Makes No sense at all).

Carl Crawford to Miami, Baldelli to TB? Jones to somewhere and willis to tampa Bay with Laroche and others?

I dont get how this will work at all dude.

Not to mention Boras and Andruw have both said more than once they will stay in Atlanta through the 2007 season. Sounds like fluff. No doubt JS is working on something but other than AL it prob includes Huddy if anyone else.

Lol i was right, heck i dont know what to think. My opinion is if we can restock the minors with andruw, improve the bullpen and also get a young centerfielder, then we have done something right. Now, if we can do that and still keep laroche, i am gonna jump for joy, but i doubt that happens. We'll see what happens, and i am hoping it happens soon. BTW, the three team trade was the same one reported on here.

Atlanta gets melky +
New York gets Mike Gonzalez
Pittsburg gets adam laroche

The developing complexity is prolly that the pirates n braves could not come to an agreement on what exactly, or who exactly, the plus would be.

He said that there were big names involved, these don't sound like they are such big names to me.

Nick Markakis in the Atlanta outfield sounds amazing. Young, cheap kid who can hit second while McCann gets the move up in the batting order he deserves. If we could do this and somehow get Brian Roberts along with Markakis and not trade Laroche then we would be a team to contend with some money to spend.

Adam Laroche and Andrew Jones for Teixiera makes some sense for both clubs- Atlanta could then flip Tex and fill several holes.

who would be the 3rd team involved though

Rios can play centre field for the Marlins or Braves. But Riccardi has said he doesn't like to deal with the Braves because Schuerloz is "too smart"...

and according to the marlins we dont like Rios because we dont like the idea of him in CF for us (according to report from kevin baxter and also the mlb reporter for the fish).

LaRoche and Jones for a guy who struggled through most of last season ??? Yeah that makes sense for the Rangers, sure.....LaRoche will be raking for the next decade and Jones is in his prime... I wouldn't flip Jones for Teixera straight up....

Texiera alone? Then no you don't do it. He is only under contract for one more year. Get a third team involved, or some prospects then it could work out.

Florida wouldnt want Rios playing in CF? why? because CF in Florida is so big? Rios did play CF in the minors.

JP wont deal with Atlanta because Shurholtz is too smart? that sounds stupid to me, you dont just forget about a team because you think their GM is too smart.. maybe JP isnt smart enough in which case he shouldnt even be a GM. im a Jays fan and some of the moves JP has made have been good, but some have been insane, like drafting Russ Adams in the first round.

"Nick Markakis in the Atlanta outfield sounds amazing...If we could do this and somehow get Brian Roberts along with Markakis and not trade Laroche then we would be a team to contend with some money to spend."

..the Os could also throw in Bedard and Cabrera too...I don't think Markakis is anywhere close of leaving Baltimore...notice that these rumors are coming from Shuerholz's side which isn't the operative side that would need to okay a Markakis trade...

hey i'm just quoting another source. But I bet the Rios batting the ball into the stands stands out in people's memory so they don't think hed be good in CF even though he has speed and one heck of an arm.

I thought the Braves starting rotation was set. If I were them, I would hang on to Tim Hudson and hope he has a good 2007. I wouldn't be shocked if he wins 15-18 in 2007. As for Andruw Jones, it's obvious he will not be in Atlanta after 2007. Maybe it would be a good idea to get something in return for him now, instead of getting nothing after next season. I think Atlanta has a prety good team right now and will be in contention in the NL East, especially if the Mets don't sign Zito. Trading LaRoche would be a mistake. He's still cheap, and even though I don't think he will hit 30 HR in 07, a .280/26/101 line wouldn't surprise me. Plus, he plays good defense. The only hole the Braves really need to fill is LF, and possibly 2B.

Please explain to me how you going to get Markakis and Roberts without giving up for best trading chip in LaRoche. No way Baltimore would ever trade those guy to you unless they are getting LaRoche back.

...I was just commenting sarcastically to a an earlier comment made by a Braves fan...I don't at all think the Os would trade a better younger player for even less than the LaRoche-Roberts trade which they turned down...I sarcastically commented that maybe the Os could throw-in young promising pitchers too while they're at it...all of that and not even including LaRoche...ridiculous...

Which trends are these? Why specifically should we expect a big year from him in 2007?

look at his year to year trends.

2003 excellent
2004 average
2005 best in baseball
2006 above average
2007 ????

He will also be settled more with the completely new team and most likely see a drastic improvement in his defense.

I don't see a trend. I see a spike in 2005. A trend (and what I was looking for, more on the line of specific stats) would be something like (and I'm making this up):

K/BB:
2003 - 1.8
2004 - 2.1
2005 - 2.4
2006 - 2.9

But Willis has no trends like that. Virtually all of his skills regressed last year, poor defense behind him or not.

He's certainly talented, but I've heard no evidence for why we should expect 2007 to be more like 2005 than 2006.

If anything, recent performance has to be weighted more heavily.

2007 will be a make or break year for him. The Marlins could certainly regret not dealing him now. If 2007=2006, they'll get a fraction of what they could now.

Atl gets Willis and Figgins

LAAA get Tim Hudson and Young Pitcher from the Marlins

Fla gets Crawford or Baldelli and Diaz

TB get Young Marlins pitcher and Salty and Escobar
