Lilly At $44 Million?
Will Carroll is reporting mostly a lack of action in the early going in Orlando, but does have a tidbit concerning Ted Lilly: the asking price seems to be $11MM annually. Personally, I would not be surprised if Lilly gets $12MM annually if he waits out Barry Zito.
Or who knows, maybe the Cubs will go five years on him to seal the deal quickly. Not sure why people were balking at giving Vicente Padilla four guaranteed years but think it's just fine for Lilly.
UPDATE, 11:40pm: Lilly's agent will speak to the Cubs, Giants, Yankees, Blue Jays, and Mariners on Tuesday. And now the Globe and Mail mentions that Lilly's agent will approach the Padres.

$12M annually for Lilly. Ouch for whoever signs him..

definitely not worth it

If Lilly is worth $11-12 million per year then the Whitesox should be able to ask for an arm and a leg for Buehrle, Garcia or Vazquez.

Neither of these guys is worth that many years, not even in this karket.
Schmidt, Hendry!

Padila is easily worht 4 years.
More upside than Zito and pitched better last year.

Lilly is a #4 starter. If he is worth 11 or 12M, what is Zambrano worth?

yardboy-
Yeah, my thoughts exactly. After Oswalt signed his new deal, I thought, "Damn the price tag on Z just went to $14-$15MM." Man, if "long-reliever" Lilly is signed for anything close to $11-$12MM, getting Z signed is gonna be a B***ch.

Wow. This market if effed up. When Ted Lilly can make 11-12 million a year, you know the world is coming to an end. Makes the GMJ deal look semi decent now.

Well it looks more and more likely that the Cubs don't get lilly...
Could that mean more and more likely they get Schmidt?
I really hope it doesnt mean more and more likely they get meche

Don't sign him Toronto. Give the money to Wells!

What Big Z gets depends on what Zito signs for. I think they will get similar deals even tho Big Z is a far better pitcher.
Maybe 6 yr/100 mm

If second rate pitchers are worth this kind of money, maybe it's time to give the bat boys their due, maybe 200, 300 k per year. This is getting out of hand a little!!

If Zito gets more than 6/90 i will cry.
That being said...I think I'm going to be doing a lot of crying this offseason.

I heard that regardless of which team he chooses, Lilly will sign on Tuesday.

A little off topic but....
"According to ESPN's Steve Phillips, the Rockies, Cubs and Pirates have discussed a three-team trade that would sent Jason Jennings to Chicago; Jacque Jones, Carlos Marmol and Paul Maholm to Colorado and Brad Hawpe to Pittsburgh."-Rotoworld
Would something like this take the Cubs out of the running for another SP, or would moving Jones basically cover the cost of Jennings, so the Cubs add another arm as well?
Posted by: gatling | December 05, 2006 at 12:06 AM
I think the difference between Jones and Jennings '07 salaries is small enough that Hendry would still look to add another arm.
At least he better still be looking.

i dont think steve phillips has many fans on this site. And thusly his comments are valued almost as much as eddy curry's rebounding talent

The Cubs are going after 2 starting pitchers. What would get scrapped is plan a or b for centerfield.

I hate Steve Phillips as much as the next guy, but it's not an all bad deal. Colorado has Baker who could likely match Hawpe's production, and they'd get two young arms as well. I'd assume they'd flip Jones somewhere, probably for another arm. If they could get 3 pitchers for Jennings I think it works out. Pittsburgh makes out well if they give up Maholm and get back Hawpe, the LH bat they want behind Bay.
Since it makes some sense, and Phillips reported it, it has to be bogus. Just passing along what I saw at Rotoworld.

If Steve Phillips told me the sun would rise tomorrow, I wouldn't believe him.
If Steve Phillips told me it would rain in New York within the next 10 years, I would throw away all my umbrellas.
