« Rockies Still After Julian Tavarez | Main | Mets Shopping For A Second Baseman? »

Angels Interested In Garrett Atkins

Last year, Rockies third baseman Garrett Atkins was the second-best hitter at his position, behind only Miguel Cabrera.  Atkins isn't set to reach free agency until 2011, making him a very valuable commodity.  The Rockies had talks with him this offseason about a deal covering his arbitration years and first year of free agency, but no agreement could be reached.

Now, both the Denver Post and L.A. Times are reporting that the Angels are interested in trading for Atkins.  Troy E. Renck of the Post says Atkins's name first came up during the Winter Meetings when the two clubs were discussing a Todd Helton deal.  Renck writes that Ervin Santana would be a must in any trade and that the Angels also have interest in Brad Hawpe and Jeff Baker.  He also says Atkins is still considered a core member of the team, so a deal is unlikely.  I wonder if Bill Stoneman is trying to take advantage of a subpar start for Atkins - his defense hasn't been pretty and his power has been MIA.

From the L.A. side, Mike DiGiovanna adds several players on the Halos' radar:  Kevin Mench, Jacque Jones, Pat Burrell, Emil Brown, Morgan Ensberg, and Edwin Encarnacion.  DiGiovanna agrees that Santana is the top trading chip.  Santana could really blossom in the National League.  With Freddy Garcia and Adam Eaton struggling and Brett Myers in the pen, the Phillies probably have the strongest need.  Starters Joe Saunders and Dustin Moseley could be used if the Angels want to make a smaller deal.

As long as the Angels are making an all-out blitz for a third baseman, let's speculate on some other possibilities.  Mike Lowell, Chad Tracy, Hank Blalock have all been rumored in the past; the Rangers clearly have the biggest need for a starter.  Santana, however, could be Brandon McCarthy all over again with his flyball tendencies.

Why do the Angels want a third baseman? They have Brandon Wood who should make some sort of impact this year. They also have Figgins and Izturis.

Makes no sense to me. I think they should wait for Wood to get called up, once he gets rollin', he will be a big bat to protect Vlad.

The only place that I can see the Angels acquiring a big bat from would be 1B.

Roto,Given the Jays' struggles, any chance they could hold a fire sale and entertain the thought of trading Glaus? His power bat would look good back in LA, either at 3rd or DH.

I could see the Glaus scenario though they might want him for '08 even if they give up on this season.

Wood can also play SS or easily be moved to LF if need be. Regardless, he really needs a full seasoning at AAA before making an impact at the MLB level.

There was a reason Glaus was not resigned, and a reason the team is NOT going to trade for him--his attitude in the clubhouse was not, shall we say, constructive.

Zach Attack, i agree completely with the idea of the angels wanting power from the first base spot. And that is probably why they want Atkins. When the trade for helton was being discussed, i saw on numerous sites, including this one, the plan was to move helton, move atkins to first and bring up ian stewart to play third. So the Angels could be pursuing atkins as a first base option.

And hell if the angels want power at first base, wayne krivsky always wants 10 bullpen guys at once, see how far u can go for dunn, maybe for santana, or for dustin moseley and shields, the latter may be too much.

The words "Angels" and "trade" simply should never be used in any sentence so long as Bill Stoner-man is running the team... I just don't get it. Between Moseley, Saunders, Aybar, Izturis, Figgins and Mathis (ALL of who are EASILY expendable) this team could easily acquire a big-time bat this season. But they won't, because Stoner-man is calling the shots.
