Josh Towers is Available. Does Anyone Care?

Turns out Josh Towers had some nasty things to say about the rest of his club after yesterday's loss.  I guess they weren't that bad, but by the established standard of "we all went out there and battled" quotes, he really let his 'mates have it.

Towers has gone through waivers unclaimed before, so it would seem that if J.P. Ricciardi wants to get rid of him, he'll have to eat some salary.  But that presumes that somebody would take him at any price, and J.P. is casting doubt on that:

"The only guy we got a call on was Towers, with Philadelphia," GM J.P. Ricciardi had admitted just prior to the game. "They came to see him (vs. the M's) and we never received another call back. Maybe he wasn't their cup of tea."

I'm a little surprised no one has bit on Towers in all this time; he was dreadful last year, sure, but he's always kept walks down, and he's been pitching his entire career in the AL East.  He would seem like a decent fit for the Phils or the M's.  At this point he seems like a Kei Igawa backup plan of sorts.

I care about as much as if Jered Weaver got plastic surgery

More Gibbons issues?

Great.

At what point does the team start to think that with yet another fracas maybe the problem isn't with the players, but with the manager?

I'd take Towers and his salary if they took Marquis and his contract.

I actually like Towers and wouldn't mind seeing him fill out the Braves rotation if the Jays added some cash and took next to nothing in terms of talent back.

Are the Phillies even allowed to turn their nose up at ANY pitcher that might be available?

TNS, I think you have the jays clubhouse all wrong actualy. I would say its a really tight clubhouse and most of the flak for jays manager John Gibbons is that the clubhouse is actualy too loose and relaxed. Thus leading to the woes on the Road the team has.

Couldn't the Mets use him. He would be a upgrade over Glavine and whatever 90 year old pitcher they got.

I care. His era against the Red Sox is close to 7 and it seems he gets homered off of every time we see him. I dont want to see him go.

Wow PhillyRocks... like you have room to talk about a pitching staff...

Tom Glavine is a guaranteed first ballot HOFer about to get his 300th win. He's 41 years old, has a 4.51 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP (way better than Mr. Eaton, thanks). You'd be grateful to have him. Seeing as he's probably our 4th/5th best starter right now, I don't mind those numbers.

Even with all the questions surrounding the rotation and bullpen, the Mets still have the 3rd best ERA in the league at 3.90.

the Phils have no reason to rush out and get Towers. Durbin and Kendrick - in very small sample sizes of course - have pitched reasonably well. if or when one of them goes off a cliff, I'm sure they'll give Towers another look.

in the meantime, I'm sure Gillick is looking for a pitcher who's actually worth trading for. a futile pursuit, most likely, but still.

To be honest his ERA is much worse than how he has pitched this year. He pitched well last night's start but they got some cheap hits, bad defence and coaching miscues and we lost. He's a solid pitcher who would do well in the NL and is a buy low guy. But I guess if people don't care, then they won't fill out their rotation strongly...

Cantu to the Reds? I'm assuming he won't be playing second.

Sorry, forgot the link:

Maybe another trade from the Reds is coming.

Devil Rays acquired LHP Brian Shackelford, RHP Calvin Medlock and future considerations from the Reds for infielder Jorge Cantu, outfielder Shaun Cumberland and cash.

Ty Wiggington traded to Astros for Dan Wheeler.

Devil Rays acquire RHP Dan Wheeler from the Astros in exchange for 1B/2B/3B/OF Ty Wiggington.
