« Tigers Could Acquire Jack Wilson | Main | Stark On Dotel, Wickman »
UPDATE: SI.com's Jon Heyman says the Mets have offered Philip Humber to the Nationals for Cordero, but are holding fast with their bigger name prospects. He also confirms that the Diamondbacks are in on Cordero and could offer Carlos Quentin.
According to Barry Svrluga of the Washington Post, the fates of Chad Cordero and Jon Rauch might be tied to Eric Gagne. Gagne has the lower asking price and limited no-trade protection, and Jim Bowden may wait until that situation is resolved.
Some possible names on the Nats' radar include Wily Mo Pena, Carlos Quentin, and Philip Humber. Humber is one prospect the Mets are willing to trade, according to Jayson Stark. Those names don't exactly gel with the previous demands were hearing from Jim Bowden. Will Bowden back down? Will a desperate team offer a top flight prospect like an Adam Jones? Or will Cordero and Rauch just stay put like last year?

Cordero and Ruach have a better shot at getting traded than Gagne at this point. Especially when all the offers for Gagne include the pu pu platter deluxe.
Rangers should just keep Gagne , lock him up long term...Padres stuck with Hoffman through some tuff years, the Rangers can do the same with Eric.

I'd crap my pants if the Phils did something both ballsy and smart and went after Gagne
I was pulling for them to go after him in the offseason. Just another crazy thought. Back to the rumors.

As reported on RotoWorld:
ESPN's Jayson Stark says the Mets have gotten aggressive in their pursuit of the Nationals' Chad Cordero.
The Nationals are certain to want Lastings Milledge, but perhaps they'd settle for Carlos Gomez and a pitching prospect. If a Cordero deal happens, Jon Rauch would take over as Washington's closer.

I still doubt that Gomez gets traded. Everyone saw he could handle the bigs earlier this year, and it's a damn shame he got hurt.
I pass on Gomez+ for Cordero. I probably wouldn't even do it straight up. Like I said before, the Mets have one of the best bullpens in the NL. Adding a guy like Cordero or Gagne is a luxury, not a necessity.

Milledge/Gomez/F-Mart/Pelfrey/Mulvey/Guerra are all untouchable according to Omar. If a deal happens (which looks like it will) Humber should be the main piece going to Washington. I'd assume Carp or Niese could go too.

Omar!! Step up to the plate!!! Don't like the snakes get in your way.

Bowden's a jackass, he'll find someway to blow it. He'll ask for too much, then be stuck with those guys all season. Especially Rauch, when will he ever have trade value again?

Cordero is NOT a luxury. U can control him until after 2009 i think.. Unless you think Mota and Show(aste) are any good.
Gagne IS a luxury, it's a rental with health issues.
If it's Humber and Carp, it's a great deal for the Mets. It's an organization that will burn money at the FA market to get an ace depending on the scouting reports of course.. Look at Zito. Thank God for Sabean..
Another thing.. I hope Kenny Williams doesn't get any deal done. Hate that guy..
The White Sox will suck for years to come.. They have nothing on that outfield.

ballsy and smart are not hallmarks of the phillies.

Martinez it's not a sure thing, but the Mets will go to war with him.

Dont worry, Omars no fool. He wouldt do it straight up either. He is not trading for Cordero. The nats want too much. If the asking price drops things might change.

bowden will not drop the asking price. the guy's a moron.
Posted by: Tofubrain | July 31, 2007 at 01:34 PM
"Omar's no fool."
Let's see - the Braves are 4 1/2 games back, have just acquired the best offensive player that will be changing hands, will probably bolster their bullpen with Dotel, they're looking to acquire Arroyo and Omar is going to sit pat for the next couple hours?
Posted by: Iron Nat | July 31, 2007 at 01:35 PM
The braves arent catching the Mets. Dont you worry though sweetie. The mets will actually have a farm system to speak of after next year. The braves are putting all their eggs in one basket. Win this year or next, or be ready to be awful for a while. Thats what its looken like for Atlanta. The thing is, like I said yesterday, when Chipper goes on the DL sometime next week, Tex takes his place in the batting order, and you are the same team as you are right now. Also, MArk Texeira isnt going to stop the Mets lineup from teeing off on Buddy Carlyse and Jo-jo Reyes and Chuck James lol.

And it only took omar 2 years to go from last place to over throwing the mighty braves. Are you saying you were overthrown by a fool? Sounds like you are sweetums :)

Not a Brave's fan sweet pea.

I'm glad that the Mets didn't dump a guy whose just now putting it all together after surgery for a guy who likely will soon need surgery.
When Humber came back last season, everyone was wowed with how impressive he was coming off TJ surgery. Scouts warned us that, this season, his second overall and first full since the surgery, would probably be tougher, as is usually how it goes with elbow surgery and young pitchers. They have trouble finding command and it takes time.
If you look past Humber's 4.21 ERA you see some outstanding control numbers. 91/28 K/BB for the season, and 51/13 over the last ten games, a span in which he's gone 7-2 with a 3.90 ERA.
Those are some numbers for any pitcher whose #1 is a breaking ball, let alone one who also features a low 90s fastball, and is in his first full season back from surgery. He may yet become the jewel of the 2004 Rice trifecta.

Those overall numbers are in 109 IP btw, and 60 IP over the last 10 games. Its a pretty rough start to the season, but as you can see he's making excellent improvement. The nearly 4.00 K/BB over the last 10 games is particularly encouraging.
