Here's a smattering of random rumors.
- The Twins have tried and failed to acquire Mike Piazza, Jermaine Dye, and Kevin Mench. Instead of Dye, the White Sox offered up 33 year-old outfielder Darin Erstad, he of the .671 OPS. The Twins passed.
- Eric Gagne will apparently earn Type A status as a free agent, despite pitching only two innings in 2006. Rob Bradford has the details. This was apparently a big factor for the Red Sox in making the deal.
- The Chicago Sun-Times debunks a rumor that the Cubs are trying to trade for Scott Podsednik. How come I wasn't told about this rumor previously? Who started it? I feel left out.
- The Pirates and Tigers are still talking about Jack Wilson. Apparently the deadline version of the deal died when the Bucs asked for Craig Monroe. Really? The deal died over that guy?
- Gordon Edes has a Major League source indicating that the Orioles are "the kind of team that might have interest" in Wily Mo Pena. That's not the same as saying that they do have interest, however.

Listed below are links to weblogs that reference Random Rumors: Erstad, Gagne, Podsednik:
The Royals would be stupid not to. In fact, every team should be going after him.
This guy has massive power. 600K for the chance to unlock that potential is well worth it. The Rockies should DEFINITELY give him a shot.
I'm hoping Omar makes the move.

sounds like the rangers got screwed in the gagne deal then. david murphy and kason gabbard aren't the same thing as getting two high draft picks next year. the teixeira haul was good, this one wasn't so much

It's just like the Twins to give a lowball offer. I salute Kenny Williams for lowballing them back with Erstad. :P

Podsednik wouldn't hurt the Cubs outfield.
Since he'd be injured and not actually play, you know.

seriously Tim, don't feel left out. That rumor is terrible anyway...

Good comment bommshwa. David Murphy will be a back-up his entire life and Gabbard is a lifer in the backend of someone poor team's rotation. Two high draft picks couldn't turned into two All-stars for Texas, but i guess we'll never know!

Feel free to snap and jump down my throat, or just continually post the number 17 with ctrl+v 800 times but Engel Beltre has drawn some ridiculous comparisons to Bonds/ major LH power threats. The kids a beast.

The Rangers getting screwed isn't something that will be determined for a few years...For a team in dire need of pitching, Kason Gabbard has given them two solid starts so far, and is the left-handed, groundball pitcher that could have success pitching in Arlington. If he turns out to be a guy that can consistently give Texas quality starts from the back of the rotation and keep his ERA around that 4.00 threshold, it's hard to say they were screwed in this trade. Then you take Beltre into account, who by most accounts would have been a Top 10 talent (and no, it's not any different than drafting a HS talent with an actual pick) had he gone through the draft, and it's tough to convince me they got screwed.
Essentially swapping a guy that wasn't going to help the Rangers anywhere this year, a first and a sandwich pick for a what basically amounts to a top 10 pick and a 25 year old pitcher that fits the mold of former successful pitchers in Arlington (Kenny Rogers), and it's really a wash.

that's true about beltre, the kid obviously has raw skills, but he's still only 17. gabbard will help them, no doubt about it, but for a team that needs immediate help they could have used those draft picks next year on a couple of polished college kids for instance that would have helped sooner rather than later. time will tell whether or not they got screwed tho.
i guess essentially the rangers turned a one year free agent gamble into a couple of prospects, which is a very good move, but if the red sox get some stud prospects for gagne then it may turn into more of a wash. beltre could be the key tho

Kenny Williams is like that guy that tries to lure little kids into his house by offering them candy( talking about Garland, Vazquez, Dye), but really has something much less pleasant planned for them once they come inside (Contreras, Erstad). Only its grown men he is trying to trick, not kids. What makes him think other teams wills pay for his garbage.
