« Rosenthal's Latest: Cabrera, Haren, Barrett | Main | Larry King Expects Kent To Return »
UPDATE: A colleague of Abraham's snagged some quotes from Posada tonight, and they do sound favorable for the Yankees. Posada said, "we're really close."
Peter Abraham of the Journal News gives his take on the Yankees' situations with Mariano Rivera and Jorge Posada. He says the Yankees have offers out to both players, and negotiation is ongoing.
Abraham seems certain that Rivera will remain a Yankee, noting that other teams probably feel the same since other suitors have not surfaced.
Posada, on the other hand, has the Mets, Blue Jays, and Marlins lining up. Abraham contends that Posada's family situation and home will certainly compel him to stay in New York. The only question is whether Omar Minaya will jump in with an irrational offer - say four years at $16MM per. The New York Daily News has a source indicating that Posada is intent on exploring the open market.

Pretty interesting that the Jays are mentioned in this, I wonder if the Jays have been playing down the Canadian Dollar jump but actually do have an increase. Otherwise there's no way the Jays have the money for Posada.

I don't see Posada leaving New York, given his son's health. He was diagnosed with craniosynostosis when he was ten days old, and has had five major brain surgeries. All of his doctors are in New York, and I don't think Posada would leave them and put his son at any kind of risk for a few million dollars extra. Plus, as Abraham points out, he recently expanded his apartment in New York.
That isn't to say the biggest offer won't come from New York - chances are it will. But other suiters aren't realistic possibilities in my mind.

I may have to cease being a Mets fan if Omar gives him more than 3 years. The Yanks have the luxury of putting him at DH when he inevitably breaks down in the next year or two. Obviously the Mets don't have that option, so anything over 3 years is a HUGE risk.
I'd be much happier with Castro and Lo Duca, Torrealba, Shoppach, etc.

Only citizens get free healthcare. Also, the fact that attendance increased over 10% might give extra payroll as well.

I thought the Jays already had an old catcher who has problems throwing runners out. Yep, just checked we do. Maybe DH ? Nope, we got an old ass DHing too.
Now Michael Barrett, he's a real option for catcher!!

The Mets have the option of moving Posada to 1B...

Mets fans will forever be skeptical of moving a Catcher to 1B since the days of the Mike Piazza experiment along those lines. Does Posada have any experience playing first in the past? Being an AL player and a decent defensive Catcher, I somehow doubt it.

Posada was brought up as a middle infielder, not a catcher. He started as a second baseman. He therefore has less wear on his knees, and also has some experience playing the infield. It would be more feasible to move him to first base than most other catchers.

When has Posada ever been considered a good defensive catcher?
He was an infielder in the minor leagues though, so the 1st base option certainly isn't a bad fall-back plan. However, as great as an offensive-minded catcher as he is, I doubt he'd put up anything better, if not slightly worse than league average numbers as a corner infielder.

Logic would say that Posada would be something of a commodity. Catchers with plus offensive skills are hard to come by. It's too bad that whatever team signs him will have to, in effect, sign a check for the last 3 seasons and not the next 3. It'd be astonishing if Posada makes his next contract look good.

Posada has 15 putouts at 1B in the past 6 years. Forgive me for being a little weary of giving him anything more than a few innings a year.

Well, he can't be much worse than Delgado, can he?
