Tim sent me a couple of items, so let's create another bullet list:
- Mariners GM Bill Bavasi and manager John McLaren have met with Hiroki Kuroda yesterday. There is no report of an offer, but it's believed that four years and $45 million are expected. Kuroda hopes to make his decision on the 29th.
- Impacto Deportivo, the same site that had first news of the Mets deal with Luis Castillo, reports that Carlos Pena has rejected a three-year, $30 million deal from the Rays. Pena, however, calls the report "a straight lie."
- Randy Wolf is generating interest from the Padres, Phillies, and Astros. Ken Rosenthal notes that the market for high-risk, moderate-reward pitchers is strong, since the rest of the market isn't very appealing. This includes Bartolo Colon, Jason Jennings, Freddy Garcia, Jon Lieber, Matt Clement, and Kris Benson.
- The Brewers are in on Troy Percival after losing Francisco Cordero to the Reds. As has been said since the signing, this could also mean that Derrick Turnbow gets another shot in the closer's role.
- The Mets inquired about Bengie Molina at the GM meetings, and even though they have acquired Johnny Estrada, they could rekindle talks at the Winter Meetings. Rosenthal notes that the Giants might not want to trade Molina, since they lose considerable leverage because of the $12 million owed to him over the next two years.
Joe Pawlikowski is co-author of River Ave. Blues.
The thing with Molina is its hard to argue he'd be an offensive upgrade over Estrada at this point. He would be a defensive upgrade, and an upgrade in the "intangible" sense, so I imagine there's some interest, but not enough to cost the Mets mucho dinero and prospects. I imagine here more than even with a player like say, Ramon Hernandez, the Mets would need him to be part of a package with pitching. I know a lot of people have ruled the Giants off the Mets radar, but if all the aces to elsewhere and the Giants have available arms (obviously Lincecum isn't likely, but maybe Cain or Lowry), I'd expect the Mets to take a look. The only problem is, if this is the strategy, they'd already have had to decide on whether to tender Estrada a contract. I guess since he's significantly cheaper though, he might go back in a trade with a team like the Giants, who will want to unload Molina and then find a cheaper alternative.

Cain isn't available either. It would probably be a salary dump if Giants got rid of Bengie.

I doubt the mets would consider lowry. If they want a mediocre back end starter, they can sign livan or silva. They don't have to worry about penny pinching. I can't see them giving up a prospect for noah lowry, who isn't an upgrade over any of the 4 guys they have returning.

Your probably right, but I don't think its worth leaving a stone unturned if the Mets really can't get Santana, Haren, Bedard, etc.

The rays should be shopping Pena around. After the season he had he would command some quality players.

Hey, just created an account so I could post a comment. I live in the Dominican Republic, and honestly, if I were you I wouldn't pay too much attention to what gets posted in Impacto Deportivo. You saw for yourself that Carlos Peña called the report a straight lie. I don't know who would qualify as the most clownish figure in sportswriting in the US (maybe a cross between Jay Mariotti and Chris Berman) but that's sort of who the guys is. His main goal is not to inform but to cause some noise with what he writes, even taking things to a personal level sometimes with the ballplayers.
I hope you don't take my comment the wrong waym but yours is a website that I rely on a lot (taking it for what it is, a great source for rumors and tidbits) and I would hate to see it using dubious sources. Keep up the great work.

I know the Mets would definately prefer to acquire a legit #1 type starter, but they could probably cut out a deal with the Giants. Something like this
Mets get: Noah Lowry and Bengie Molina
Giants get: Lastings Milledge, Ruben Gotay, Aaron Heilman
The Mets get the legit starting catcher they want in Molina, as well a good young starter who can be a solid 3 in that rotation for a while. The Giants get a good young gifted outfielder in Milledge, a young 2B in Gotay and a solid pitcher in Heilman. Thoughts?

I honestly don't think the mets would do those two straight up for milledge alone, much less heilman and gotay. The mets could sign silva, keep milledge, and still have 5 starters who are at least as good as lowry.

The Mets would be luckey if they got Bengie Molina. He is an unbelievable catcher. He is a gold glover and a great clutch hitter. The Angel fans will always except him back if we can. All I know is that I never wanted him to go and I want him back as an Angel.

Keep in mind that if the mets deal milledge, they have a hole in right field as well as an injury prone 41 year old left fielder. I think any deal involving milledge will have to be a signifigant upgrade to the pitching staff, otherwise I'd expect to see milledge stay in NY. His value to the mets is higher than it would be because they seem to be counting on him as a regular for next year, a year I'd guess that they anticipate being a contender.

I dont know what pena is even worth right now in terms of a return if the rays dealt him , i mean before this past season he had what? 2 ok seasons before disapearing for 2 more , then all of a sudden 40+ and 100+ , id say if they could deal him for a young power hitter to plug in somewhere else and a bullpen arm to do it , and let the other team take the risk with pena
