« Olney On Blanton And Haren | Main | Hunter Receives Five Offers »

Yankees, Brewers, Giants, Astros, Rays After Percival

Buster Olney sums up the known Troy Percival suitors thusly: Yankees, Brewers, Giants, Astros, and Rays.  He obviously wouldn't close for the Yankees, but might be able to pitch the ninth for the other clubs Olney named.

The 38 year-old Percival is a fascinating story.  He missed all of 2006 and joined the Cardinals this year and posted phenomenal numbers - 1.80 ERA, 0.85 WHIP, 3.6 K/BB.  Suddenly he's primed to snag a closer gig again, if he wants it.

Olney named five clubs, but it's been said that ten teams are in on Percival.  Teams that were confirmed to be involved last summer: Dodgers, Indians, Cardinals, Braves, Athletics, Phillies, Tigers, and Marlins.  I think it's safe to assume the Phillies are one of the ten.

Giants could use Percival as closer and mentor to Brian Wilson....

I kind of like the Percival to the Giants idea. I really think Wilson could use a full season as a setup man before transitioning to the closer role. Tyler Walker would be a great 7th inning, spot closer guy also, that could give the Giants a nice bridge from the 7th-9th inning.

With mota out of the picture, I'd think the mets may be in as well.

When are the Giants ever going to learn ...

Signing old men to play on your team is NOT how you rebuild. Percival is a great guy but the Giants need to get younger and they need more payroll flexibility.

They DO NOT need to enter a bidding war with 9 other clubs.

BrewCrew really need a guy like Percival. Probably can't outbid the Yankees or the Giants because the Giants are really stupid.

This just reminds me that every year it seems like the Giants have the flexibility to do something creative and productive, and then do exactly the opposite.

Looks like their third basemen might be Pedro Feliz. Again.

Where do you guys think Haren and/or Blanton go?

The Giants do need to get younger, and dump salary quick, but this isn't as bad as some other things they COULD be doing...like resigning Feliz.

I wouldn't mind the Astros getting Percival as a closer, as long as the price is decent. He'd be facing essentially the same lineups he had success against in 2006. Plus, it should stop them from spending $10 million or more on Cordero. Plus, they have guy that could step in if Percival struggles (Qualls) and a number of young power arms that might be able to close in the near future.

I would try to sign him at $3-4 million base salary with some very nice incentives based on games finished that could bring the deal over $7-8 million. I wouldn't hesitate to install Qualls if Percival struggles.

Percival was truly outstanding in 2007. Who knows if he can replicate it in 2008, but he strikes me as a better risk for 1 year than Cordero, Gagne, or Dotel.

I meant that he'd be a better risk for 1 year than Gagne or Dotela and a better risk for 1 year than Cordero for $40 over 4 years.

The Giants have been getting younger. Barry/Moises/Morris/Finley have been dropped the past two seasons. Lewis/Schierholtz/Ortmeier are seeing much more playing time. The pitching staff is one of the youngest in the league if not THE youngest. Having Percival would not be bad guy to have in the pen.

I'd love to see the Giants take a one year (though I'm sure with this many teams on him, it'll take more than that) flyer on Percival, their pen would be set.

The Giants may make dumb moves, but come on now, the Dodgers made the dumbest moves last off season, Jason Schmidt, Juan Pierre anyone?

I'm sure glad the Dodgers outbid us on Juan Pierre...That guy sure can run fast though...lol

Yes, the dodgers made some bad moves, but the giants were just as bad. At least the dodgers have a solid farm system though...The giants don't have much to be optimistic about in the near future.

I would be surprised if the Dodgers move Loney or Kemp...

Loney looks like he could be a solid 1B and decent power.

Loney should be a star. Plus defense and a .915 OPS at age 23 at Dodgers Stadium? Should be their third hitter now, if not the future.

I agree gogo...

I unfortuately saw Loney up close this past season. He has a great glove and good instincts at 1B. I don't look forward to facing him the next few seasons...

zito...I'm sorry, but I have to say:

Your name instantly gives anything you say less credibility. You should consider changing it. If not something normal...you could go the route of "Zito4biggestbustaward" or something.

If you think a screenname is more important than baseball knowledge, well....thats your problem...

Peace

id like to see the red sox take a shot at percival if they cant get something done with kerry wood , or even timlin , they do need to find another hard throwing right handed set up guy to go with oki

you guys are crazy if you think Percival is going anywhere, other than back to St. Louis. They gave him the chance(and the best deal last summer) and he'll stay loyal and return. He said he loved playing there and would love to return.

Loyalty doesn't matter much anymore...

Players see $$$$$ If one team offers 10 million and another 10 million and 50 cents....the player will take the extra fiddy
