Mets Close On Erik Bedard?

There's some crazy stuff floating around Mets-ville, let's take a look. As usual MetsBlog is on top of it.

  • Mets beat reporter Sweeny Murti said on WFAN that the Mets might be close on Erik Bedard.  This would be very surprising, because even the Mets' best package could be challenged by a number of teams (unless Jose Reyes is the centerpiece).  Plus, why wouldn't the Orioles wait for Johan Santana to be moved first?
  • Matthew Cerrone also heard some craziness involving a three-way deal with Bedard and Miguel Tejada, but there doesn't seem to be anything to it.

If Reyes is dealt, I think I'll be sick.

Apparently Mike Francesca didn't think it was worth going into.

Man I hope the third wheel isn't the Twins getting Tejada...

THIS JUST IN! Nashville, TN - Omar Minaya and fellow Mets official were all arrested in their room Monday night after being found smoking CRACK.

Yeah this is al talk right now. It makes sense for the Mets to invlove themselves in some contract eating. There are a lot of ways you could work this three way deal. The los Angeles could work such that they don't have to give up as much, so they could still persue Miguel Cabrera.

I almost lost it when I saw the headline on Mets blog. Then learned it was a rumor. This thing gave me wicked blue balls.

Anything the Mets do or not do isn't worth Mike Francesca going into....he's a Lifelong Yankees homer who wouldn't even give the Mets the time of day if it wasn't his job.

Lets' make a new rule not to talk about your own balls.

wicked blue balls.... haha I love it.

This is why I love baseball. The offseason is 5-6 months long.... but still keeps you on the edge of your seat.

fair enough basemonkey. I hope I did not evoke any mental images.

Mets need a young starter, Bedard is certainly the right direction. Jose Reyes scares me in Baltimore, he will help that team alot, not contenders, but certainly refreshes the team and Bedard is probably a 20 game winner in the National League, i think this is a fair deal. I know im going to be crucified by Mets fans, but you guys would be getting a pretty damn good pitcher...

another point is that Orioles COO Andy MacPhail of all baseball men won't jump the gun. He's more a patient type of baseball man...it is absurd to think that he will make a move before Johan gets dealt, esp. since prety much any deal that could be offered for Bedard should be passed thru the Twins first...to me this sounds like the NYC media machine picking up a random rumor and giving it a lot more life than it really deserves..

How's this for a wild idea: Mets make a deal for Bedard and Tejada and then offer Reyes for Santana straight up. I'm not necessarily advocating it, but a rotation with both of them would be insane, I might be able to live without Reyes. Even if the Twins turn you down, you can still find a way to get something back for Tejada, and you can afford to eat his contract.

I wonder if the orioles would threw in Tejada to "spice up" the deal for maybe one more prospect, so they have someone to replace Reyes at short?

If the Mets eat enough contract, I think they could get away with not giving away reyes. Don't forget, the Angles are could also contribute players to the Bedard fund.

hahaha, coolpapabell...sure enuff...the only pictures I need are hanging on the wall...

..also, BTW I have personally seen Bedard pitch in person with up close seats and he is a damn damn good pitcher...a ton of great hitters lave the plate against him looking like children...ever since he developed that mid 90s cutter, he's been ungodly..the only reason we haven't heard much the hype to match that ability on him is the fact that he plays for a losing team his whole career...

meddler, ive been following the Santana rumors as a Red Sox fan for the last few weeks, trust me when i say, if a yankee or sox fan heard you say anything about a straight up trade, they would verbally cut of your head, there is no way the twins are in this for a straght up trade, they want 4 prospects minimum

...another point to be made here is that the Os aren't the As or Twins and looking to dump money or contracts...that might be nice...but, the Os just want to get good and young players period...it's for talent reasons not salary ones...so any team wanting some kind of discount in talent for salary dumps should talk to the Twins or As...

I wonder if the Mitchell Report has anything to do with this. It's been mentioned numerous times that Tejada could possibly be included, and if so, his value absolutely plummets. If the Mets are willing to take on his entire contract, I can see why the O's would be interested.

Your not getting Reyes plus three. That's just crazy. Reyes is at least somewhere near the caliber player Santana is, if not in the same discussion, and he's locked in for pennies through 2011. I don't care what the Yankees or Red Sox think, Jose Reyes has more trade value than Phil Hughes or Jacoby Ellsbury.

And I do think the O's are trying to dump salary. They're going into a rebuilding period and they had a record high salary going into 2007 by a wide margin.

One thought I had about why they might want to talk sooner than later with the Mets: Maybe they like Ramon Castro. The only way the Mets can discuss Castro is if something gets done before Dec. 12, when they have to make a decision on Estrada. Castro makes sense for the O's, he gives them a good offensive player with some risk that could be a great stopgap for Matt Wieters.

Just heard of possibly another Bedard type trade to Mets. Mets give Church, Heilman, Humber, Pelfrey, and F-Mart for Bedard

Castro can't be dealt until like June, right? He just signed a new contract a few weeks ago.

The Orioles are asking way too much for Tejada. He is 32 and his numbers are declining every year. He is no longer what he was when he was with the A's. Asking for Jered Weaver and Brandon Wood. Are you kidding me. I would say to the Orioles come and swing by when you start to talk serious.

Oh is that a rule? Its possible, I just know Castro gave the Mets a pretty good deal when he could have gotten money elsewhere.

@ Bravesfanuc

I read about that deal too. It would suck losing Church already, but I guess that means Omar would plan on signing Fukudome, or maybe even Rowand/Jones.

Yikes.

Santana > Reyes.

Again, I'll reiterate. The Os are trying to get good young players. True that usually means cheap ones as well. But I do not think the Os are willing to take on lesser players in order to save money. I guess that's just what I was getting at. So forget the "Swap out Gomez for Endy and eat a bunch of contract" sort of talk...

...honestly when you start to get into the 4-to-5 players for 1 deals then it stops being even a serious rumor...

Minaya said "Reyes and Wright are core players" meaning that he will not be trading any of them since the team is built around them, so don't worry fellow Reyes lovers. I would imagine that any combination of Heilman, Pelfrey, Humber, Gomez, and Church will be included in the trade. If Heilman is traded, Billy Wagner will be either pissed or upset. He was quoted in the newspaper sating things like " The Mets shouldn't trade away talentlike Heilman" and "They need to focus on bringing back key players" (reffering to LoDuca) So i'm scared...he might be starting to act like he did in Philly :(

JerseyMetFan where did u read that??!?!

@ Krusty

I read it here: http://mlb-rumors.blogspot.com/

However, take it worth a grain of salt. He lists no sources.

...The reason why Heilman and Humber are always mentioned in Mets trade rumors is because those are the two guys Mets officials and fans wouldn't mind getting rid of if it means getting stars back...unfortunately both of those guys have only gotten a couple of years older since their values truly peaked...and the main question is this:

If Mets officials and fans are so willing to give them up, what makes them think any other team wants them for their best players?

first of all, Tim, Sweeny Murti is not the Mets beat writer... he's actually the YANKEE beat writer... but thats ok, he knows a lot about the orioles being they're in the yanks division...

Second of all... he's a bum, and usually is wrong about everything he says... this would be the first time he didn't have to clean up his own mouth's mess...

If heilman is traded he'll probably get the job as a Starter which is what he wants to do

Sweeny Murti is the beat reporter for the Yankees...
Where is Ed Coleman when you need him...

@ basemonkey

Go look at Heilman's stats for the past 3 seasons. He's a great, consistent reliever.

Mets officials and fans are so willing to give them up because they understand that in order to get talent, you have to give it.

I'm not saying Heilman is trash at all...he is a legit ML RP...and a good one at that...my point tho is that it's not as if he hit the majors at 23...he came up a little late but got good quickly to his credit...but at his age, and probable peak values, he's better suited for a near contention team or bonafide contender, not a team looking to rebuild and get younger...

...second of all, his pitch count numbers always contradicts his insistence on being a starter...HE IS NOT A STARTER...it's really funny how when he is trade bait, fans and officials talk about him as a potential starter on any other team...but when the season starts, they put him in the pen...right now, the Mets have an obvious need at SP, so why are they looking to deal him in order to get a starter...to me that adds up to the fact that if he is a starter, he is a starter like Rodrigo Lopez, Russ Ortiz, or Byun Hyun Kim are starters...that is, the type os starters who's ERAs rise due to losing gas by the 3rd time through an order or 4 th inning...that's not a starter...

and more on Heilman, he has been frustrated with the mets for quite a while, he had openly complained about wanting to be a Starter. So trading might be to improve the team chemistry

Heilman is good...and he makes any team's bullpen pretty damn strong late in a game...but, that's an awful luxury to have on a young team who is getting blown out...and by the time that young team starts putting it together and gets good, guess what? Heilman is about 32-35 and near declining if not already...

heilman is 29 years old :o what you be talking about homie?

RE: Sweeny Murti:

"...he's a bum, and usually is wrong about everything he says... this would be the first time he didn't have to clean up his own mouth's mess..."

HAHAHAHAHA!!!

I got a good laugh out of that one! I don't know if Murti is a bum, but he is a helluva Yankee homer, worse that "Fat Man" Francesca...he gives John "Satan" Sterling and Susan Waldmann a run for their money as biggest Yankee homers in NYC.

...Heilman is 29, yes...I am not saying he's old...listen to what I am writing instead of nitpicking me to see if I am dissing your players...

...the Os are trading a good young SP approx the same age as Heilman...the Os are trying to get younger...the Orioles are more than 3 years away from real legit contention...they have a nice collection of promising young arms that need to mature and they have a nice young up-and-coming star in Nick Markakis...but the very best talent is 2-3 years away...when players put it together and start peaking Heilman will be almost 35...until then he would be a nice luxury to have but totally unnecessary for the Os...from the Oriole perspective, why dilute what Erik can bring you by throwing in an unnecessary player as a major piece of the trade?...

...this is what the talk means when they say the Mets don't have the players...it's not to say that the Mets don't have talented players or prospects...it's just that they don't have a well rounded group of available useful players...you have to have very specific needs that fit the Mets available guys...trading is not about tossing in a bunch of good leftovers...it's about matching up against another team's roster...

"Just heard of possibly another Bedard type trade to Mets. Mets give Church, Heilman, Humber, Pelfrey, and F-Mart for Bedard"

I think that'd be too much to give up. Hold on to Church and then offer up the other four guys, that should still get it done anyways, considering Fernando Martinez is still one of the best prospects in baseball and Mike Pelfrey was once considered an elite prospect and still has that kind of potential if some things go right for him

To basemonkey: don't need to lecture me here :P i was just messing with ya :P and you're not the only one who thinks that the mets don't have the players to make such a trade for an Ace...that's why us met fans are panicking a little :P

Sorry fellow fans, no ace this year! But I would love to see another "project" turn around like Maine/Perez.

Rich Harden could do wonders if healthy and should come cheap. Anyone else you'd like to take a gamble on?
