« Details On Angels' Cabrera Offer | Main | D'Backs Trade Quentin To White Sox For Chris Carter »
Just a one-liner from Charley Walters: "the Twins plan to begin talks with Justin Morneau on a multiyear contract soon."
At one point in March of this year, Morneau said he and the Twins were "pretty close." Morneau is under team control through 2010, but didn't sound optimistic about extending that when asked in September. He'd love a five or six-year deal, buying out two or three years of free agency. We'll see what the Twins offer.

The interesting thing is that Morneau wants to keep playing with Mauer. As I recall, both have indicated they're willing to take fairly significant hometeam discounts if they're signed to contracts of similar length.
Morneau's market value at this time is a little lower than it was right after his MVP year, but that market value could go right back up. Six years is too much, but I'd love to see the Twins sign him for four, maybe even five. Provided the terms are reasonable.

The Twins need to sign him. Hopefully he will be better after he has a little security.

With Santana and Hunter (and possibly Nathan) off the books, the Twins should have the money for Morneau.

that is part of the reason for the trades, they are trying to open up money to hold on to a good team for years to come, even delmon young would be under control until 2012, and morneau already till 2010. They are building for the new stadium, im really starting to like some of the youth movement.

YES, as a Twins fan this is what I have been waiting for....and we need something to cheer about right now with all the Santana controversy. Morneau is BY FAR the best hitter on this team. Mauer is nothing but a punch and judy contact hitter who would rather take walks than drive in runs. Mauer is always hurt, and has yet to show any significant power development (35 HRs in 4 years!), while Morneau absolutely CRUSHES (65 HRs and 241 RBI over the past two years alone). PLEASE lock him up for 6-7 years!
