« Odds and Ends: Hinske, Doumit, Colon, Greene | Main | Needs and Luxuries: Tampa Bay Rays »
According to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick, the Royals have signed Brett Tomko to a one-year, $3MM deal. He can earn another $1.5MM in incentives. Tomko seems likely to get an initial shot at starting. The odds are stacked against 30 league average starts, but Tomko is regarded as one of those enigma guys who has decent stuff. So he has slightly more upside than some of the other free agent starters.
It could make sense to look at Tomko for the closer job and switch Joakim Soria to the rotation. Tomko's flexibility might come in handy. Fun subplot: Tomko will see a whole lot of A.J. Pierzynski now, his former Giant teammate who he called a "cancer" several years ago. As far as I can tell Tomko has never pitched to him.
Crasnick names the Athletics, Astros, Rockies, Nationals, and Reds as other interested parties in Tomko. As an MLBTR commenter mentioned, the Royals are probably out of the hunt for Bartolo Colon now. The Reds are probably done after the Affeldt signing. But the Astros and Nats might still be looking for a starter.

I can't believe that the A's would be a team after Tomko, except possibly in a minor league filler role.
Tomko, to put it mildly, sucks. Really sucks.

You could do a lot worse
Tomko could be a huge steal for 1yr/ 3 million if he can come even close to 04/05 season status, or can be a solid addition to the bullpen either way
At least its better than what Carlos Silva got...

I don't see anything wrong with this it's just a filler signing. We should expect a lot of this over the next couple weeks. Still a bunch of guys like this available and they have to sign some where.

Remember one spring training Pierzynski offered $100 dollars to any Sox teammate who hit a bomb off Tomko? Good stuff.

Thats an awful signing, he is a NL-bum who will get slaughtered in the AL. ERA over 6 is more likely than not.

Better than Colon, who wants two years and can't throw 90. Probably just hoping they get lucky with him in the first half so they can flip him at the deadline for someone decent.

this is what we all said about meche.
im not a tomko fan, but i wont doubt moore's eye for pitching. that guy came from the braves core that built their dynasty.
joakim soria + gil meche, and they turned things around quite well with greinke....im not gona doubt any pitcher signing by moore until he shows me a series of bad ones. that guy knows what he's doing. (dont say bannister, he sucks.)

Brian Bannister sucks? Or is this the opinion of a bitter bandwagon Mets fan who is mad that Bannister was traded away for Burgos? I think I will go with the latter.

Dayton Moore has done a terrific job so far. That organization is on its way up (they might already be better than the White Sox)

"Tomko" and "upside" are two words that don't go together. He is garbage, as a starter and in the bullpen. He kept Chad Billingsly from making some pecious starts last year. And even though that should be considered Ned Colletti's and Grady Little's fault, it's still easy to point the finger at a guy who had opportunities in Los Angeles. Tomko might be the only guy who got boo'd louder than Barry Bonds at Dodger Stadium.
If you want to talk cancer, Brett Tomko probably was a huge reason the Dodgers didn't make the playoffs last season.

Depth. Depth. Depth.
Tomko is not the feature free-agent signing of the season for the Royals. While he will 'compete' for a rotation spot he's not the ace. (unlike previous years)
Meche, Bannister, Greinke seem to be solid locks.
That leaves De la Rosa, Davies, Hochever, Tomko, Hudson, and Bale to battle for the other two spots.
He's worth taking a shot on imo. As long as you're not relying on him to be your ace then there's nothing wrong with this signing.

Well as soon as AJ joined the Sox he was a main contributor to a world championship. So I guess Tomko was right. Give me a break. He is lucky to even find a job in the majors. If he happens to make the royals out of spring training, which is a longshot in my eyes, we will see what happens when he faces peirzynski in a game.

Oh thank god the Reds didn't sign him. He was one of the remaining free agents taht I was praying would NOT sign with the Reds.
I disagree with Tim though I don't think the Reds are done doing things yet. I think they will bring in at least one more pitcher to compete for either a bullpen or starting job.
