« Brian Roberts Rumors | Main | Bartolo Colon Signs With Red Sox »
Last week we looked at one face of the steroid era (Barry Bonds) and wondered where he might end up playing in 2008. Today let's take a look at the newest face of the steroid era, Roger Clemens. Clemens has yet to decide whether to pitch in 2008.
While his friends believe that the Astros are the only option, Buster Olney suggested the Cardinals could also be an option. And while the Yankees and the Red Sox have shown zero interest, we can't rule out a mid-season return to either team. Both have question marks in their rotations, and if the proposed solutions don't pan out, they will be in the market for a proven pitcher in July, no matter what Hank Steinbrenner says now. Another team that could be a darkhorse after the All-Star break is the New York Mets. We learned yesterday that they have tried trading Orlando Hernandez, as there appear to be serious concerns about his health. And if the Mets are fighting for a playoff spot in July, memories of last year's collapse with the added pressure of having added Johan Santana will fuel the effort to win "at any cost." Let's also not forget that 11 more wins would put Rocket into the Top 5 all-time and 20 wins (2009?) would make Clemens the third winningest pitcher ever, behind only Cy Young and Walter Johnson. Let's take a look at what some are thinking about Clemens in the Blogosphere.
If there is a topic you would like to see covered in "Baseball Blogs Weigh In" please let me know HERE.
And that's it from the Blogosphere. Is Roger Clemens pitching in '08 a non-story? Is there a team out there that we are not considering that the Rocket could help this season? Let us know in the comments.

PLEASEEEEEE can Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds retire? For the expletive love of God this is driving me bananas. This is the number one reason baseball has more drama than a high school lunch room. God.

OH I forgot.. STAY retired.

You're right. Time heals all wounds. Once these 2 finally retire hopefully the steroid talk will subdue and people can focus on *gasp* baseball.

Congress is also forwarding a recommendation to the Department of Justice to investigate Clemens on grounds of perjury. (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/26/sports/baseball/26clemens.html)
So, I cant imagine any team is willing to put millions towards him until this all shakes out. Likewise, Clemens will be in no mental space to focus on pitching. If things work out for him by the break, then yeah he'll probably pitch...but he waits until then every year. But honestly, just retire already.

I think wanting one of the greatest hitters of all time to play another season is focusing on baseball. Thats just me though watching someone put up 1.000 ops seasons is fun for me.

Clemens and company will probably convince the Yankees that there is a huge bidding war on him, and they will end up paying $25M for the season. lol

Haha, No. It'll never happen, as much for PR reasons as anything.

The cardinals rotation problems are very real...very.

Maybe all the unemployed users (Bonds, Clemens, Sammy, etc.) and the users who are hanging on by a thread (Giambi, etc.) could form their own independent league. They can play the MLB all-stars at the break like some twisted and perverted version of the Iowa Baseball Confederacy written by Hunter S. Thompson.

The day that Clemens puts on a Red Sox jersey again is the day I renounce Red Sox nation. After 24 years, that would kind of suck, but I will, for the rest of my life, hate any team he plays for with a passion usually reserved for child abusers and Henry Kissinger.

If he would take a big salary cut, I think the Stros should sign him. Of course we would hear less about the Stros staff sucking and more about steroids every freakin day, but then again we hear something about roids every freakin day anyway!!

The Brewers seem to be a popular team among substance abusers these days. In fact, most of their fan base abuses some subtance or another on a daily basis. It's just normally a more legal substance.

I hope he does pitch again, but for someone other than the Yankees... They completely turned their back on him, as if all the players on their team have always been completely clean and innocent...

Thats good stuff Chorizo

There is a huge difference between Roger and Barry. Barry's teamates hat him. However, look at what the former Astros teamates have to say about Roger. Lance Berkman said today that he hopes that the Astros sign him. If the guy can pitch, and he does not hurt chemistry, then it is could be a good signing. As far as him being distracted...trust me, Roger lets off steam on the mound. He is a man with a temper and he needs a place to let it all out and a pitching mound is his place to do this. If he is healthy, he is going to try and come back and if he comes back it will be with the Astros.
Also, a HOF is probably not going to happen, but it would probaby be a good thing to go on the ballot after Biggio goes on the ballot. Biggio has a squeeky clean image while Roger does not. He knows that it would be a bad thing to go on with Biggio. Also, if Bonds does not catch on somewhere, then he would also go on the ballot after Bonds and this would also help him. That said, his hall chances are slim.

barroid and his buddy roger have something in common; very poor character. I never want to see either again, either in uniform or street clothes. Well, maybe I wouldn't mind seeing clemens in an orange uniform, picking litter off the highway median. Arrogant, lying sacks, both of them. Good riddance.

While Astros players wouldn't mind Clemens returning, Astros fans have a completely different opinion.
We're sick of him (and his agents) posturing and waiting until the last minute for his annual cash-grabs and ego-stroking, and none of us are too pleased about how he shafted the Astros and in a sense doomed their season when the Yankees deal went down last year.
As far as I'm concerned, Roger's me-first behavior the last few seasons has come home to roost.
Rocket should retire. The Astros could use him, but dealing with a potential Tejada trial is a circus enough.
