« Odds and Ends: Baldelli, Salcedo, Piazza, Rivera | Main | Mariners Release Horacio Ramirez »
2:34pm: Theo Epstein says he hasn't been talking to the Mets. Amalie Benjamin of the Boston Globe labels this rumor a fabrication.
2:10pm: Newsday's David Lennon confirms the Mets haven't traded for Crisp, implying that they wouldn't be interested.
1:13pm: WFAN's Ed Coleman reports rumblings of a possible Coco Crisp to the Mets deal, which would involve Angel Pagan. It's not confirmed or official, but it's out there. When I get more I'll update the post.
Crisp's contract: $4.75MM in '08, $5.75MM in '09, and an $8MM club option for '10 with a $0.5MM buyout. Crisp has posted an OPS around .700 for Boston while playing stellar center field defense. I imagine he'd spend time at all three outfield positions for the Mets if acquired.
Pagan, 26, started in the Mets' organization. The outfielder plays all three positions and has a career line of .255/.306/.415. In January of '06, the Cubs purchased his contract from the Mets. He made the Cubs' Opening Day roster, but a torn hamstring knocked him out until July. The following year he got the call in May to replace Felix Pie. Then he had an unfortunate bout with colitis. In January of this year, the Mets reacquired Pagan from the Cubs for Corey Coles and Ryan Meyers.

Seriously?
Posted by: beeniez | March 12, 2008 at 01:15 PM
lol, for what??
Posted by: 04Forever | March 12, 2008 at 01:17 PM
I would not worry about evaluating it until we learn whether it's true and who's actually involved. But I got 20 emails about it and did hear it on WFAN so I figured I'd put it up here.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | March 12, 2008 at 01:20 PM
not a terrible idea for the Mets, given Alou and Beltran's track record for missing games, but I can't imagine the Mets would give up anywhere near as much as some other teams that could really use Crisp in center field.
Posted by: jakec | March 12, 2008 at 01:20 PM
angel pagan? thats a pretty funny name lol. i doubt this is true unless pagan was not the cornerstone of the deal. we dont really need a center fielder or right fielder right now, those positions are locked for awhile with drew and ellsbury. i could buy Steve Schmoll being the center piece of this deal but not pagan...
Posted by: 04Forever | March 12, 2008 at 01:24 PM
Isn't Angel Pagan with the Cubs?
Posted by: Bourne's_Identities | March 12, 2008 at 01:25 PM
wait a second, isnt carlos beltran the mets center, or is crisp going to replace alou?
Posted by: 04Forever | March 12, 2008 at 01:27 PM
no, pagan is a met
Posted by: 04Forever | March 12, 2008 at 01:28 PM
Pagan was traded from the Cubs to Mets. I imagine Coco would spend time at all three OF positions.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | March 12, 2008 at 01:29 PM
if your right tim, i wonder how that would make him feel. he would definitely get more playing time with the mets, but if alou returns, he will be a utility guy still and his playing time will get cut alot. he has to be really mad at his situation right now, frankly i dont blame him, it certainly sucks to be crisp right now...
Posted by: 04Forever | March 12, 2008 at 01:32 PM
I know there is no confirmation. Are there any other players involved? Pagan and Crisp are basically the same player.
Posted by: vader2112 | March 12, 2008 at 01:35 PM
I for one cannot fathom the point of a Crisp for Pagan trade from either team's perspective. There has to be someone else getting talked about here.
Posted by: peterherman | March 12, 2008 at 01:36 PM
Isn't the point of trading Crisp because he wants a starting job he doesn't really deserve? How would this be better than his situation with the Red Sox?
Posted by: Andy Braves Fan | March 12, 2008 at 01:41 PM
I just don't see the difference between the two. As a Mets fan, I'd rather give Pagan a chance in that role before making a move for Coco Crisp and paying close to 5 million a year for essentially the same guy.
Posted by: AdropOFvenom | March 12, 2008 at 01:44 PM
well andy, alous has a hernia problem right now and is out for maybe a month or two, so crisp will fill that void for now, but your right, once hes back then what? move alou or remove crisp again, and i can certainly say this wont be a center for center trade, it makes no sense for the sox to trade for what they are trading for in the first place
Posted by: 04Forever | March 12, 2008 at 01:45 PM
I agree with AdropOFvenom. Just doesn't seem to make much sense for the Mets. Even if you want to say Crisp as the track record, Endy Chavez is virtually the same player with a better throwing arm. On a team without a Carlos Beltran, Endy would have as good a shot being a starting CF as Crisp would, he just never had the big year Crisp had a few years ago. But when you look at career averages and tendancies, they have the exact same skillset.

Mike and the Mad Dog on WFAN, NY are talking like this is a done deal. Is it??? What a mistake, not what the Mets need at all
Posted by: vader2112 | March 12, 2008 at 01:54 PM
Cui Bono? (who benefits) im so confused...
Posted by: 04Forever | March 12, 2008 at 01:58 PM
I wish the Cubs would have hung onto Pagan. He's very athletic and has shown the ability to hit the ball when given a chance.
Posted by: cowboy2024 | March 12, 2008 at 01:58 PM
I do wonder if this is a case of Omar Minaya looking to making moves to acquire pieces for other trades, as I can see where a Coco Crisp would be an interesting piece for the Pirates, for example, in a potential Xavier Nady deal.
If they dealt Pagan for Crisp, and then dealt Crisp and someone else for Nady, then Minaya would end up looking like a genius IMO.
Posted by: AdropOFvenom | March 12, 2008 at 01:59 PM
Interesting… Are they maybe thinking about moving Beltran from CF to a corner to keep him healthier sometime soon? Maybe split his time in 08 with Crisp (who really isnt a corner guy) and slowly make the transition to fulltime corner-guy for 09-2010? Otherwise, I dont think Crisp solves their problems very well...
Posted by: darkstar1661 | March 12, 2008 at 01:59 PM
Why don't the Mets pursue Andre Ethier who is blocked by Juan Pierre in LA????

Mike and the Mad Dog have a history of doing that. Ed Coleman only said that they were discussing a swap and M&MD are acting like it's a done deal.
Of course, Angel Pagan just hit a 2 run Home Run. :)
Posted by: AdropOFvenom | March 12, 2008 at 02:01 PM
maybe the dont want to trade inside the league pkkarate, thats not unusual

I like what your saying as a Mets fan. I hope Omar has somehting up his sleeve I would love to have X back in a Mets uniform.

I don't feel bad for Coco Crisp in any way whatsoever. The dude is still set to make close to $10M over the next two years. If anything, he should feel bad for me, sitting at my desk hammering away at Excel all day.
Posted by: mmontice | March 12, 2008 at 02:04 PM
I'm not necessarily opposed to this, but I don't know that it should be done either. A) Pagan is cheap, B) He has more hits this spring than anyone in the NL, and C)Is Crisp really going to be any happier on the bench in NY than he is in BOS?
I realize NL bench players see more time but still, the bench is the bench.
Posted by: ReardenTech | March 12, 2008 at 02:05 PM
I also agree that getting Nady back would be the best move.
Posted by: ReardenTech | March 12, 2008 at 02:06 PM
04Forever, I was aware of Alou's injury, my question was about when Alou came back. Sorry I didn't clarify.
I just don't see how Coco fits in. The idea that he is being traded for to be flipped doesn't make much sense because nobody seems to have much interest in him at all. The Sox don't really need Pagan, the Mets don't really need Coco. Where is this coming from?
Posted by: Andy Braves Fan | March 12, 2008 at 02:06 PM

Posted by: 04Forever | March 12, 2008 at 02:06 PM
This trade would make sense for the Mets because Alou and Beltran are very fragile and perhaps Crisp would sort of platoon with Church. If he played for the Mets he could see 400+ AB's easily.
Posted by: themfightnwords | March 12, 2008 at 02:08 PM
i agree andy, i dont really want this as much as everyone else.
Posted by: 04Forever | March 12, 2008 at 02:09 PM
I really don't care either way if this happens or not. I just don't see the sense in it.
Posted by: Andy Braves Fan | March 12, 2008 at 02:12 PM
the sox won't trade coco unless they get pitching in return, fat chance this happens
Posted by: buttaplaydtoast | March 12, 2008 at 02:12 PM
crisp has still been absent from todays game up until this point as well
Posted by: 04Forever | March 12, 2008 at 02:18 PM
I honestly don't understand why the Cubs ever traded Pagan to the Mets in the first place. He did have the unfortunate bout with colitis last year, but when healthy he always played well for them. Great defense at any of the 3 OF spots, excellent speed, switch hitter, and a little pop in his bat to boot. Now here they are looking for another OF bat who can play CF when they got rid of Pagan for a couple of no-name prospects.
Posted by: CubFanForLife | March 12, 2008 at 02:20 PM
Well, the Mets don't have much in terms of pitching that they would trade. At best Coco could fetch them a decent bullpen arm or a 6th (7th or 8th) starter type. I hear that the Mets do have Jorge Sosa and Scott Schoeneweis up there as bait. Maybe one or both of them are involved, though I don't see why the Sox would want either of them.
Posted by: Andy Braves Fan | March 12, 2008 at 02:21 PM
This was just on Newsday.com
Not really. A Mets official chuckled and said no when asked if the team had traded for Red Sox outfielder Coco Crisp, as had been rumored. The Mets need an outfielder, but they want to see what they have in spring sensation Angel Pagan and whether Endy Chavez is healthy enough to play against righties in Moises Alou's absence. They entered spring training needed a righthanded bat in the outfielder, and they still do. But they expect Alou to be back at some point.
Posted by: vader2112 | March 12, 2008 at 02:25 PM
i could buy it being for steve schmoll or carlos muniz
Posted by: 04Forever | March 12, 2008 at 02:31 PM
Lou did not like Pagan plain and simple. The reason is because Pagan does not always have his head in the game. He does make bone head mistakes sometimes, which is sad. He can play all OF spots, has some speed, some pop and can go get 'em. I liked him as a back up player. I forget the game last year but he made a base running error and Lou lit him a new...I should watch the jokes with his situation. I knew he was not on Lou's good list.
Posted by: studio179 | March 12, 2008 at 02:32 PM
Interesting info studio, I was wondering how his tenure with the Cubs went down.
I am curious to know why Crisp is sitting, but maybe its his day off. Pagan is playing and he hit another homerun. I am interested to see if this guy can do it for another month, off of mlb pitching.
Posted by: coolpapabell | March 12, 2008 at 02:52 PM
Horacio Ramirez got released.
Posted by: ArodSucksAtLife | March 12, 2008 at 03:02 PM
Yeah, this one never really seemed to make sense. Proven major league OF for unproven minor league OF with little upside? Nah.
Posted by: FineHamAbounds | March 12, 2008 at 03:35 PM
“I am curious to know why Crisp is sitting, but maybe its his day off.”
…Coco has been fighting hamstring tightness this pre-season. Coupled with a Dentist visit, he really hasn’t played at all yet. The hammy isnt supposed to be a real problem, but it couldn’t have come at a worst time for him…
Posted by: darkstar1661 | March 12, 2008 at 03:36 PM
errr, should say "Groin" not hamstring up there. Sorry...
Posted by: darkstar1661 | March 12, 2008 at 04:33 PM
Yeah, Coolpapabell, when Lou got suspended last year for the umpire inccident, it was a close play at 3rd and Pagan was the runner. That is not the time when Lou went off on Angel though. A few games later he made a bone head running play and after Lou lit into him. You did'nt see him much after that one game. Then his medical issues followed. Anyway, the Crisp rumor with Pagan made no sense to me before it was bogus.
Posted by: studio179 | March 12, 2008 at 06:27 PM
Studio...you're right on about Pagan. The guy is such an athlete but it's a waste of talent. The baserunning is awful and I remember him turning the wrong way at least 2-3 times on flyballs. For all his speed he doesn't steal bases -- probably because he can't read the pitcher. I think Lou couldn't wait to get rid of him...you can't play on Piniella's team if you can't play smart.
Posted by: crunchy1 | March 12, 2008 at 07:22 PM
Fun fact...
Over the last two seasons, 2006 through 2007, 122 hitters whose primary position is outfield have played in at least 140 major league games in total over those last two seasons. Crisp and Pagan are tied for 100th of the 122 in that group in OPS+ over 2006-2007, both with an OPS+ of 81.
