Decision Time On Baldelli

Back on December 23rd, I asked Marc Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times what kind of trade value Rocco Baldelli had.  Of course, Topkin told me his trade value was miniscule.  Topkin also said:

An interesting sidenote is that the Rays have to decide by April 1 on his 2009 option, picking between a $4MM buyout or a $6MM salary AND then being on the hook for his combined 2010-11 option or a $2MM buyout.

Quite a pickle, and I think the fact that this decision must be made in three weeks was lost in the shuffle.  MLBTR contributor Cork Gaines took a look at the Baldelli situation on his blog today.  As Cork suggests, perhaps some kind of renegotiation is in order.

Tim, it's not this years salary + $6 million in buyouts. He can't get both the $$ million and the $2 million.

It's either (assuming all your numbers are right):

$2.25 million this year
+ $4 million buyout
= $6.25 total

Or:

$2.25 million this year
+ $6 million next year
+ $2 million buyout
= $10.25 million

Or Tampa could pick up both options and keep him longer, but right now it doesn't look like that one is in the realm of possibility.

The Cubs should get him! Trade a couple no name prospects and Marquis!

Sorry inthecards we've experienced wood/prior before thank god Neifi got us through it lol, alot of the Rays blogs seem to believe that Rhode Island's most famous hamstrings are afflicted by a degenerative disease and raysindex.com believes he is allergic to himself. Although if Hendry could get Friedman (Rays sorta gm guy)to take Marquis he might have to include $15mil in cash as well (still not a bad deal ). Rocco is a good idea for a team with alot of money and alot of depth, unless his contract is re-negotiated the Cubs will just have to give up cash to get him in a month anyway. He'd be a great fit in Boston being from the area and the fact that Boston could use a healthy baldelli to convince Sox fans that Manny isn't going to be Manny forever...

Send him to the Mets. They could use a bat, and since he is hurt half the time anyway, he will fit right in.

A question for Cork: Have you ever suspected that Rocco is paying the price of having his body break down from steroid use? Has there been any whispers about that and do you think there's any validity to them?

never heard any of those rumors, and i would doubt it as he doesn't really fit the bill. he is only 26. He has always been a great athlete with natural power.

the one rumor that i have heard that might make sense is that Rocco has some sort of muscle disease that is making his muscles breakdown and age at an accelerated rate. Again, that is message board rumors. i only mention it because it does fit the profile a little better than steroids.
