« Crumbling Edmonds Makes Pads Think Trade | Main | Baldelli's Hamstrings May Open Door For Lofton »
The Dodgers' Andy LaRoche suffered a torn ligament in his right thumb when he was hit by a pickoff throw in Friday's spring game. In the same game, Nomar Garciaparra was hit by a pitch on his right wrist. LaRoche will undergo surgery and will miss eight to 10 weeks. Garciaparra suffered no break but is in pain and will be evaluated today.
If Garciaparra joins LaRoche in sick bay, the recent Brandon Inge-to-the-Dodgers rumor that was declared dead this week may be resurrected. If both LaRoche and Nomar miss significant parts fo the season, the Dodgers' already shallow infield will need a warm body or two.

“LaRoche will undergo surgery and will miss eight to 10 weeks”
…Of course! I tell you, it seems to be fate; it seems this guy is destined to never get a shot with the Dodgers. Please just trade him to Pitt or somewhere at this point and allow him to have a great career…

Hank Blalock should/might be available for cheap as he's coming off a lost year due to injury, and we're rebuilding so we'd probably/should only ask for a decent prospect or two rather than a guy on the major-league roster.
What is it the Dodgers don't like about LaRoche? Doesn't walk that much, hits for average and power, only 23 etc. Is his D really bad or something?

Is Shea Hillenbrand's phone ringing? LOL.
LA could be creative. Pick up a guy who is out of options like Marte and try him out for a few weeks. They rotated the job last year (Abreu, Laroche, Hillenbrand, Garciaparra, etc.) so they could certainly do the same this season for the early part.

Ned Colletti said on mlb.com that the Dodgers will be going with internal options until they get LaRoche back. I think that is a smart move. Let Nomar play until he gets seriously hurt if that happens.
Crede had an injuried 07 and did not do anything while he was "healthy". Brandon Inge played a full season and had nearly the same rbi's Nomar had in limited time while playing in a stacked lineup. Plus that is just adding more to the payroll. Compare the numbers-
Inge 151 Games 14 HR 71 RBI .688 OPS
Crede 47 Games 4 HR 22 RBI .575 OPS
Nomar 121 Games 7 HR 59 RBI .699 OPS
I think the Dodgers were going to start Nomar at third base this season to begin with, then LaRoche would take over in June anyways. They still have Tony Abreu, who is just coming back from an injury, and Delwyn Young who can hit and they are trying to find a spot for.

…Its just the Dodgers, and really it’s the mentality you see with all the big-market clubs. Its “name” first, and then use the top-prospects as a last effort. They don’t like to grow through the growing pains most of the time so… Same thing can be seen in Anaheim, Boston, Cubs, WhitSox and the Mets and Yankees to different degrees. With LA having kids at 1B and in the OF, yet another at 3B is just a risk they are reluctant to make ~ and his dumb-luck hurting isnt helping it at all… He is a complete hitter with plus fielding though, top 15 prospect in the game ~ he is a stud and should be atleast solid for years if ever given a real shot…

...Great to hear! A shock that they are doing the right thing, and just really great to hear!

Hypothetically, if the Dodgers did sign Inge, do you think that would make LaRoche expendable?
I would imagine that he would hint that he wants to leave instead of sitting behind another veteran for 2+ years.
