« Extending Young Starters | Main | 9 Reasons General Managers Make the Decisions They Do »
Outfielder Todd Linden hit .353/.421/.482 in 85 Spring Training at-bats in 2007. That and the fact that he was out of options helped him snag the Giants' fourth outfielder job that year. Linden can play all three outfield positions. However, the Giants designated Linden for assignment on May 10th after just 55 ABs. The Marlins picked him up and he fared a bit better. But they were still able to pass him through waivers to send him to Triple A in June.
This year the 27 year-old boasts a spring line of .577/.633/.885 in 26 ABs. Nonetheless, the A's decided not to take him with to Japan. That means he's not making the team, and Linden understandably isn't happy about it. The versatile switch-hitter should be able to hook on somewhere as a fourth outfielder.

Could he be a fit for the Cubs instead of the higher priced Coco Crisp or Marlon Byrd?

Linden is a AAAA player...
Nobody needs him.

Who is better at CF, him or Denofria ????
If he hits like that then is his defence really that bad that Denofria can take the starting job away from him ???
Posted by: BaseBallz | March 17, 2008 at 03:54 PM
I think the cubs would take a look.

I'm not so sure Denorfia is a lock for the starting CF spot either. He isn't having a spectacular spring, and I think the A's want to see what Ryan Sweeney is capable of before guys like Cunningham and Gonzalez start knocking on the door. With Mike Sweeney coming out of nowhere and likely becoming the main DH that puts Cust in the OF on a somewhat regular basis. Buck, R. Sweeney and Cust look like the main outfielders unless the A's opt to play Sweeney as the 4th man and I don't see that happening. Denorfia might be sent down to AAA to regain his swing after his season off.
The bottom line is that the A's had several options in the outfield, and by Mike Sweeney playing his way onto this the team, he essentially left one less opening. Linden was probably about the #5 or 6 guy on the list, even with his good spring. Not to say Linden is not a decent ballplayer, but thank god the A's didn't read too much into his spring stats.

26 ABs

What are the chances that the Mets sign him for depth while they get their outfield back together? (Assuming, of course, that Delgado doesn't fail to dodge any more flying bats and that the outfield is ALL they need to bolster.)

Does he have emotional problems or what?
Posted by: hitttman | March 17, 2008 at 05:56 PM
I think he's getting desperate and I would too. This is really his best opportunity and he hasn't done anything wrong. It's tough when a team values emil brown higher then you that's a low blow.

low risk move for the padres?
Posted by: deadbeat17 | March 17, 2008 at 06:18 PM
Sounds like he has Matt Murtonitis.

Deadbeat: I am a Padres fan, that is why I axed that question.

Don't worry Todd, you'll be playing in Japan soon enough.
Posted by: Slayer | March 17, 2008 at 07:00 PM
That's a little harsh slayer.

hittman, it doesnt seem like he has emotional problems, he just hasnt gotten too many chances to play, i'd say just take a waiver on him and see what he can do.
i mean even if he did have emotional problems, he

*he couldnt be any agrier than milton bradley...
that would be the end of my comment from before

SD or NYM seem like a good fit.
Posted by: maximumpotential | March 17, 2008 at 09:13 PM
CubFanforLife...sounds like a good fit for me for the Cubs. He's a switch hitter and can play all three outfield positions. I'd rather have him for nothing than overtrade for an overrated player like Marlon Byrd or have to listen to Coco Crisp complain about his playing time.
Posted by: TheGrinch | March 17, 2008 at 09:43 PM
The Cubs are looking for someone who can bat right-handed and play all three outfield positions, especially centerfield.
But while Linden perfect, the Cubs are looking for VETERAN 4th outfield (especially to complement the youth of Felix Pie and Sam Fuld), so I'm not sure it's a fit.
I think Linden's better than nothing for the Cubs, but they'll probably look somewhere else (Byrd, Crisp, Lofton).

I can't say what the A's were thinking, but I know what happened with the Giants last year. He was only given 55 ABs last year with the team, but he struck out in 23 of them!
Posted by: jaywest05 | March 17, 2008 at 11:53 PM
Man...not good enough for the Giants...
That's harsh

Sounds like a career minor leaguer to me. Great number in Spring when players are getting sorted out or playing above thier level.
PS 16+ hours without a new post? I can't tell you how many times I've loaded the page and saw "Linden Doesn't Have Spot With A's." I'm beginning to believe this is important, lol.

If you are going to tak a gamble for a 4th outfielder, then sign Kenny Lofton. He did well the limited time he was at Wrigley 56 games 3/20.327
and last year was decent for an old man. 136 games 7 homers 38 rbis .293 avg and a .362 oba. The other benefits are he is a lefty and a solid veteran that possibly could teach Pie how not to become the next Corey Petterson.

he would seem to be the perfect option for the cubs. Cheap, switch hitting, capable at all 3 outfield spots.
