Rosenthal's Latest: Crede, Willits, Rivera, Belliard

Ken Rosenthal checks in with all kinds of hot stove info.

  • Continuing on yesterday's post regarding Joe Crede and the Dodgers , Rosenthal reports that a source close to Dodgers management explained that the team trading for a third baseman like Crede or Brandon Inge is "all about the budget and whether [owner Frank] McCourt will allow them to add money."  Rosenthal continues to point out that Crede is a better deal than Inge in terms of their contracts, and that Crede could also be more attractive to Dodgers management because the White Sox might be willing to trade for prospects, while the Tigers are looking for immediate bullpen help.
  • The Mariners had been in the market for a veteran right-handed hitting outfielder, but have opted instead for in-house options.  It seems Coco Crisp could have filled a need.  Sure, he's a switch-hitter, but his splits suggest it could have made some sense.  If they didn't have to part with too much, it might have worked.
  • The Angels have a surplus in the outfield -- Juan Rivera and Reggie Willits -- and Rosenthal reports that Willits is now untouchable according to the Angels (two teams have inquired after him recently).  The two are blocked by Vladimir Guerrero, Garrett Anderson, Torii Hunter, and Gary Matthews Jr.  While it sounds as if they'd prefer to move Rivera (a free agent at season's end), it's hard to imagine that they'd send Willits to the minors (he has options remaining) if they don't find a good match for Rivera (Umpbump Coley suggested the Padres or Mets yesterday).  As Coley pointed out, the Angels have numerous banged up pitchers, and there are a number of teams out there who are going to be starting center fielders with inferior skill sets compared to Willits (as Tim pointed out a few days ago).
  • The Nationals are dealing with a surplus at second base, and Rosenthal believes that Ron Belliard is the most logical piece to move, what with his $1.6MM salary this season, and his $1.9MM for next.  Rosenthal pinpoints the Rockies (perhaps too little range on the right side with Jeff Baker and Todd Helton), Cardinals, Twins, and White Sox as potential trade partners.

"The Angels aren't willing to part with Reggie Willits (two teams have recently inquired about him), but are instead interested in moving Juan Rivera, who will be a free agent at the end of the season."

...think it might have something to do with the fact that the teams asking are only offering low-upside low-minor type guys? I cant imagine anyone offering much more than that, and that would probably lead the Angels to say "thats alright, we'll just keep Willits and focus on our 25-Man problems and more pressing issues first".

“The Nationals are dealing with a surplus at second base, and Rosenthal believes that Ron Belliard is the most logical piece to move, what with his $1.6MM salary this season, and his $1.9MM for next.”

…Didn’t they just give Belly an extension? They had been rather openly shopping Lopez towards the end of the season as well…

@darkstar1661:

Most definitely it has something to do with these low-ball offers. It just surprises me that in a division as tight as the NL West, that the Padres couldn't part with an ML-ready pitcher (dealing from a strength) in order to shore up something that they should most certainly be concerned about (namely, their outfield). Can't believe they're low-balling at this point. Edmonds is not suddenly going to get healthier.

Yes, Belliard was extended in July. That alone would make me think that they have no interest in moving him. But Rosenthal makes the point that Bret Boone will be kept around due to nepotism (Bob's in the organization, as is Aaron) and Guzman has a contract that would prevent him from being moved without the Nats taking on a lot of his ludicrous salary (slated to make $4.2MM this year!!).

i thought about the M's getting Coco Crisp for awhile now. i wouldnt trust his arm in right field but you could move him to center and Ichiro back to right. Coco would also add some much needed speed on the base paths. especially since they have already made it clear that they are going to be much more aggressive at stealing bases this year. He would be a pretty nice fit and I would be much more comfortable with him that brad wilkerson.

Ichiro in right is exactly what I was thinking. Makes sense to me, as Brad Wilkerson is now a yearly disaster.

I agree, Crisp and Ichiro makes the defense and pitching a lot better.

Well it is Bill Bavarsi, so Coco for Clement doesn't sound too insane. Bavarsi is an idiot.

Though seriously what would the Mariners offer for Coco. I agree though, Coco in CF for the Mariners meas a good chunk of the outfield is covered.

The M's have the prospects, they can work something out.

Matt,

“Can't believe they're low-balling at this point. Edmonds is not suddenly going to get healthier.”

…Yeah, but Willits sucks! :) His MiL numbers don’t say he should probably be expected to be good, and he hit the ground with a thud that was felt in China last year in the second half. Seriously, it knocked my Figgins bobblehead off my desk! (I’m down the street from the stadium so…) Watching the Angels last year in the second half, it was obvious to me the team was better off without him late. If the other teams were watching, well then I could understand lowball offers… Maybe the thud knocked the BrianGiles bobblehead off Towers desk as well! hehehe…

Oh, and Belly can also play 3rd. Where Boone (the one not caught for performance enhancers) was signed for 3rd (for youre “Family Affair” reason one could only guess), he is also out with injury already and I believe on a MiL deal anyway. If the Nats really do sacrifice 2 ML 25-Man spots just to get the two useless MiL-contract Boone guys on the club, then Belly does look like he should be moved. Its just so backwards in my mind though; so counter-productive to the teams overall best interest and goes against the recent extension to RB. I think they would be so much better off having both Aaron and Brett in AAA and let them get the hug-fests in down there where they don’t hurt the club ~ Belly is better then both and makes both expendable while only costing 1 roster spot…

Willits is a switch hitting speedster who gets on base 39% of the time. He gets on base more than Ichio(as much as Ichiro did last season) and has done so in the minors as well. He leads the league in pitches seen per at bat. He's very valuable and underrated.

@darkstar1661:

Yeah, Willits' first-half was driven by a 40% hit rate, so he was bound to come back to earth. Still, his walk rate is a real asset, as is his speed. His OBP is leadoff-worhty. Plus, he will earn less than $1MM over the next two seasons. But still, that's probably not worth as much as the Angels need it to be worth.

I agree with you in totality regarding the situation with Belliard. Keeping either of the Boones around is proof-positive of the idiocy of Bowden/Papa Boone (let alone keeping them around over Belly). Rosenthal is the one who thinks it makes sense, and I don't think that in this regard, Rosenthal makes much sense.

One flaw that seems constant with the Angels is their timing. They hold onto young players too long in hopes of them developing, and then find their value diminished because they've either consistently failed or they're no longer young.

Willits value is at its peak. He's coming off a respectable season and plays solid defense. Playing him in AAA for a year leaves them with this scenario: he COULD get hurt; he COULD have a mediocre or poor season there, and he WILL be 28 next year. NOW is the time to trade him.

The Angels should deal guys like Rivera, Willits, Evans and others for lower level prospects, to assure the talent flow continues. Keeping them until they wither on the vine serves no purpose.

And here's my question about Ponson (though it applies to other hurlers who try out for scouts):

If, as they often say, a hurler gains a few miles per hour when he moves to bullpen from the starting rotation, why should one believe the 94 mph readings when a pitcher like Ponson works out for scouts? I mean, if he goes back to having to throw 100 pitches and a starting role, it's inevitable that his fastball is gonna lose a few ticks and then he won't look so shiny and new anymore.

Devlsh--i agree completely about the Angels. they definitely hold onto many of their guys too long. the point in bringing in hunter this year and matthews the year before (or was it 2?) was to solidify a weakness. now that they have done that, there's no need to keep willits, rivera, etc. even though they may be promising. despite a few injury concerns, the combination of guerrero/hunter/anderson/matthews in the OF will absorb most of the playing time. therefore, get what you can for the other guys. matt, i like the idea of coco to seattle. hadn't really considered that. would juan rivera be a good fit there as well in your opinion? he seems to fit rosenthal's description of what they're looking for.
