| Padres, Rays Interested In Jeremy Reed »

Nothing huge cooking this morning, so here are some odds and ends.
- Doesn't look like the Dodgers will acquire Marcus Giles.
- Rany Jazayerli writes about how Kansas City is home to many of the country's best baseball journalists. On a related note, the Star's Sam Mellinger has a chat with Brian Bannister on his blog.
- Coco Crisp rattles off the trade rumors he's heard: Cubs, Sox, A's, Padres. No deal appears imminent, though Crisp was healthy enough to pinch-run this morning.
- John Harper snags an exclusive with Alex Rodriguez. A-Rod admitted he chose the Rangers over the Mets for money and feared he was going down that road again this past winter.
- Roch Kubatko writes that Brian Roberts was pulled from the lineup today for back pain, hoping to nip trade speculation in the bud.
- The Phillies have to make a decision on Kris Benson today.
- Aaron Gleeman weighs in on the Joe Nathan extension. Buster Olney talked to baseball execs who felt the Twins should've added Nathan's money to their Johan offer.

Listed below are links to weblogs that reference Odds and Ends: Giles, Crisp, A-Rod:
Couldn't the White Sox look at Marcus Giles? If he can bounce back somewhat he could give them someone who could play second and leadoff once in a while, because they really don't have a leadoff hitter and the trio of Ramirez, Uribe and Richar doesn't exactly get me too excited about their state at second base. He wouldn't cost much and would simply give them another option.
And I agree about the Santana thing. If the offers for Santana were so underwhelming, why not take that Nathan money, offer Santana what he wanted, then trade Nathan for prospects? Now they're saddled with Nathan's contract and no trade clause, and settled for a package that could end up offering them very little long term.

Can you imagine a Reyes/A-Rod/Wright infield?
Scary.

Do the Mets still go after Beltran or Pedro in that case though?

Good insightful piece from John Harper on A-Rod. Interesting to see how he seems to be maturing now, listening to his heart instead of his agent now. He has always been one to please others..now looks like he's looking out for his own best interest.

The Twins didn't even get the best deal on the table for Santana. They could have probably got a decent pitching prospect from the Cubs for Nathan.
Looks like the Twins are already missing Terry Ryan.
Why not deal an overrated Joe Mauer or Joe Nathan?

I was thinking Tyler Colvin, Jose Ceda and Eric Patterson for Nathan and Pridie. Would you rather have that and Santana, or the Santana package and Nathan..? Gotta pack the former I think
And I don't think the Twins would ever deal Mauer, he's now pretty much completely the face of the franchise.

scribbletone ... you left out a small matter off also being saddled with an additional $100m in salary expenses.

also - that package for Nathan would not be nearly enough. Nathan is worth more than Brian Roberts.
I don't think that offer even gets you in the door to begin a discussion.

One final thought ... reading these A-Rod puff pieces is getting old.
If he crawled back to the Yanks for $20m then maybe I buy the fact that he isn't all about the money. But to score a 10/300 deal (assuming he hits his incentives) proves his contract is hardly all about his love of NY.
The guy has a PR team larger than many small businesses. He is saying all the right things to win back the hearts of NY'ers. I just can't believe anybody accepts what comes out of his mouth as the truth.
I liked Pay-Rod better when he was a greedy, money grubbing mercenary. This new, softer, A-Rod is a joke.
It's funny hear him talk about signing with Texas. The picture in one's mind is Boras holding a gun to his head forcing him to sign the deal. Couldn't be further from the truth. A-Rod controls his negotiations. If he wanted to go to the Mets then he would have. Instead he opted for more dough. I also enjoyed his comments about playing for Texas. I'm sure Ranger fans don't need another reason to hate the guy but if so ... read this article.
At the end of the day I don't begrudge A-Rod one bit for going after the most money. I do, however, take exception when he tells people with a straight face that it isn't about the money.

Ceda, Colvin and Patterson wouldn't even get you in the door? I seriously doubt that. Its not like every team in baseball would be chasing after him. Thats three good young players, I think that would easily be enough to get you in the door.
And if Pohlad was willing to offer Santana that $100M in the first place then I think he could afford to do that.

The Dodgers would probably be better served just sticking with what they have. Delwyn Young has played well back at second this spring, and his bat is a known plus despite his numbers this spring. He can back up there with Hu and Abreu playing third and second while waiting for Kent (shudder) and Nomar to get back. No point in spending the vets minimum on a guy you wont need in 3 weeks.

Although I agree with that to some extent, I do question it a bit as well. Young is not a comfortable option for 2B, but it ideally is a short time so it might be ok... Hu has never played 3B in an actual game though, and has only spent minimal time at 2B even. Abreu offers little to nothing but D and slight speed if he somehow ever manages to get on base. Although it wont be a long time needed at 2B and Hu/Abreu covers that great ~ a back-up 3B might be needed for a while and Hu/Abreu just doesn’t fill that at all. The teams reluctance to play LaRoche anyway even compounds it, to which you have to figure they will do something external for the hot-corner…
