Jays trading Michael Young!

Theo Epstien trading for Schilling
Posted by: themfightnwords | March 29, 2008 at 09:44 AM
Jon Daniels trading Chris Young, Adrian Gonzalez, and Terrmel Sledge to San Diego for Adam Eaton and Akinori Otsuka
Posted by: zippy06 | March 29, 2008 at 09:45 AM
Andrew Friedman has only been on board with the Rays for 2+ years so jury is still out on most trades, including Garza for Young which could end up being either the best OR the worst.
as for best, this one surprises me as much as we bash Edwin Jackson on Rays Index, but to get a potential mid-rotation starter in his early 20s that can touch 98 in the 9th inning (on the rare occasion he gets to the 9th) for Lance Carter and Danys Baez is a great deal. Carter is in Japan now and Baez has bounced to two more clubs with ERAs north of 5

Re: "Jays trading Michael Young"
He said current General Managers. Young was traded before Ricciardi came aboard. The Young trade was under the management of Gord Ash, I think.
Maybe this is Ricciardi's best trade - Picking up Jeremy Accardo for Shea Hillenbrand. Accardo is Jays' closer and Hillenbrand is currently waiting for some team to phone and offer a contract.

didnt that trade help the sox win a world series
worst trade ever of course is kazmir for zambrano. mets would have prob won a world series if not for that, at least an NL pennant
Posted by: jerseyballer | March 29, 2008 at 09:46 AM
Best trade: Mark Teixeira and Ron Mahay to the Braves for Elvis Andrus, Matt Harrison,Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Neftali Feliz, Beau Jones, and 4 other prospects
Posted by: zippy06 | March 29, 2008 at 09:48 AM
Derrek Lee for Hee-Seop Choi

For Jim Hendry, its a tie for me between trading 3 pitchers for 1 year of Juan Pierre, or Trading Greg Maddex for Cesar IsTerrible
Posted by: The Big Jew | March 29, 2008 at 09:48 AM
Jim Hendry -
best trade: trading Todd Hundley and Chad Hermanson to the Dodgers for Eric Karros and Mark Grudzielanek.
(although the Aramis Ramirez trade is right there!)
worst trade: Trading Sergio Mitre, Ricky Nolasco, and Renyel Pinto for one year of Juan Pierre.
close up is the Steve Trachsel trade of last summer for Scott Moore.
Posted by: Jay107 | March 29, 2008 at 09:49 AM
I think Hendry could have gotten more for Maddux had he went elsewhere, but he was trying to accommodate Maddux in that deal too, shipping him somewhere where he actually wanted to go.
Posted by: Jay107 | March 29, 2008 at 09:51 AM
For Shapiro, it's obviously Brandon Phillips to the Reds for Jeff Stevens. As Stevens progresses, the deal begins to look a little less disastrous but still pretty disastrous none-the-less. The Tribe F.O. was pretty down on Phillips to make that deal since they chose to keep a mediocre middle infielder who had options instead of Phillips in the bench role. Rumor had it that it was John Farrell (current Red Sox pitching coach) and Eric Wedge who insisted that Phillips had to go and Shapiro caved under the pressurs.

The Beginning of the END
Sabean trading Joe Nathan, Fransico Lirano, and Boof Bonser for A.J.Pierzynski
Posted by: GD | March 29, 2008 at 09:55 AM
Tony Reagins only has 1 trade... OC for Garland. that could turn out to be either his best or worst trade, depending on how the parties involved perform, and how well Aybar/Izturis do at shortstop for the Halos.
so there ya go.
Posted by: bseballcrzy17 | March 29, 2008 at 09:56 AM
I've got three Billy Beane's for you. Two bad, one good.
Bad:
2003, Michael Barrett to the Cubs for Damian Miller...
2004, Tim Hudson to Atl for Juan Cruz, Dan Meyer and Charles Thomas. A's saw/have seen ZERO production out of any of those players
Good:
2004, Mark Mulder to Stl, for Dan Haren, Kiko Calero, and Daric Barton.
Posted by: ajdalporto | March 29, 2008 at 10:01 AM
For Dave Dombrowski of the Tigers, getting Gary Sheffield for three minor league pitchers - Humberto Sanchez, Kevin Whelan and Anthony Claggett looks pretty good so far. Too early to comment much about the Cabrera/Willis pickup
Posted by: Jim T | March 29, 2008 at 10:03 AM
Jon Daniels.
Best trade: Eric Gagne to the Red Sox for Kason Gabbard, David Murphy, and Engel Beltre.
Worst trade: Chris Young, Adrian Gonzalez, Termell Sledge to the Padres for Adam Eaton and Akinori Otsuka.
Posted by: skyharbor215 | March 29, 2008 at 10:06 AM
sorry Jim T lol... as soon as i saw the headline ...that trade came to mind lol
Posted by: Larsen101 | March 29, 2008 at 10:08 AM
David Dombrowski's worst trade has to be for Neifi Perez (although he saved Verlander's no-hitter, so it might've been worth it?).
It's easy to say that his best trade is Maybin-Miller for Cabrera-Willis, but until it pans out, it's a tie between Urbina for Polanco and Santiago for Guillen.
Posted by: bobrob2004 | March 29, 2008 at 10:09 AM
Jim Hendry, to me, has been one of the better traders in baseball.
Best:
-Derrek Lee for Hee Seop Choi
-Jose Ceda for Todd Walker
-Getting Nomar and Murton for practically nothing.
-Aramis Ramirez and Kenny Lofton for essentially Bobby Hill
-Dumping Todd Hundley and Hermansen for Karros and Grudzielanek
-Trading Miller for Michael Barrett
Worst:
-Pierre for Mitre, Nolasco and Pinto
-Giving away Greg Maddux for maybe the worst hitter in baseball (Cesar Izturis)
-Wasting Cherry, Moore and Renshaw on the crappy Steve Trachsel
Posted by: scribbletone | March 29, 2008 at 10:10 AM
Damn scribbletone, you beat me to it this time! But I will add trading Freddy Bynum for Kevin Hart to your list.
And Reynel Pinto would be the answer to the Cubs current lefty reliever question. Nolasco and Mitre probably don't make the staff, but I agree that trade stunk on principle alone. Three serviceable pitchers for one year of Juan Pierre!
Posted by: crunchy1 | March 29, 2008 at 10:14 AM
Hey Hey scribble! Izturis is/was no where near the worst hitter in baseball.
Do you not remember Neifi Perez??
Posted by: Jay107 | March 29, 2008 at 10:14 AM
Signing Scott Linebrink in Chicago to 4 years 19 Mil. to pitch in the smallest of the small parks is going to be hard for any GM to top.
Posted by: LHSP89 | March 29, 2008 at 10:20 AM
Omar Minaya, NY METS:
Best Trade: Gomez, Mulvey, Humber, and Guerra for Johan Santana
--i KNOW it was just made, but any time you can get the BEST PITCHER ON TOP OF HIS GAME, for 4 minor leaguers, none of which are your BEST pitching and hitting prospect, it's a win
WORST TRADE: Matt Lindstrom and Henry Owens for Adam Bostick and Jason Vargas
--many people will argue the Heath Bell and Royce Ring for Ben Johnson and Jon Adkins trade was worse, or the Brian Bannister for Ambiorix Burgos trade was worse.
However, Heath Bell was given NUMEROUS chances and never showed consistency. I love how Mets fans always want other people's guys saying "perhaps he needed a change of scenary" yet can't accept this for their own players. Bell had no place on the team; perhaps he needed a change of scenary.
As for Bannister, at the time, what we THOUGHT we had WAS starting pitching depth. ANd picking up a 22 year old kid who can hit 100 mph but was rushed to the bigs by silly Royals management and has future closer written all over him for a 4th starter AT BEST, you do that trade; WHICH IS WHY THE MARLINS MADE THE SILLY VARGAS/BOSTICK TRADE WITH THE METS.
Matt Lindstrom and Henry Owens BOTH can hit 100mph, and have shown to be TOTALLY dominant. Henry Ownes was a bit older and now hurt, however, if he can contribute for just 3 seasons, that is all you need for a WIN NOW TEAM like the Mets.
Bostick never pitched in the bigs yet and jason vargas got his tits lit every time he was in the ML last year. Horrible trade, EPSECIALLY last year when the Mets needed ALL THE BULLPEN HELP they could get
Posted by: bigchart333 | March 29, 2008 at 10:25 AM
Omar Minaya:
Best: Probably Kris Benson to the Orioles for John Maine and Jorge Julio (who was then traded to the D-Backs for El Duque). The trades for Oliver Perez and Duaner Sanchez were nice too though.
Worst: As far as worst with the Mets, there are four here that I'd consider, and I think I'd rank them in the following order (1 as the worst):
1) Heath Bell and Royce Ring to the Padres for Ben Johnson and Jon Adkins
2) Brian Bannister to the Royals for Ambiorix Burgos
3) Lastings Milledge to the Nationals for Ryan Church and Brian Schneider
4) Henry Owens and Matt Lindstrom to the Marlins for Jason Vargas and Adam Bostick.
Remember, the Kazmir trade was Duquette, not Minaya.
However, Minaya's worst trade ever was definitely that trade he made when he was with the Expos. We all know which one that was:
Expos trade Grady Sizemore, Brandon Phillips, Cliff Lee and Lee Stevens to the Indians for Bartolo Colon and Tim Drew.
Does that count Tim?
Posted by: MetFanBen | March 29, 2008 at 10:26 AM
Yeah, I didn't mention the Santana trade (which was an incredible move), mostly because I'm not sure how much of it was thanks to Minaya rather than Cashman and Epstein... But you gotta give Minaya credit for sticking with it, so I'll understand if you want to say that's his best. I think of it more as a free agent signing than a trade though, because it came down mostly to which of the four teams was willing to pay him. It wasn't a "steal" like some of those other trades were.
Posted by: MetFanBen | March 29, 2008 at 10:29 AM
Some were already mentioned:
Best:
Tie 1) Acquired INF Placido Polanco from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for RHP Ugueth Urbina and INF Ramon Martinez.
Tie 1) Acquired shortstop Carlos Guillen from Seattle in exchange for shortstop Ramon Santiago and minor league shortstop Juan Gonzalez.
3) Acquired Carlos Pena, minor league reliever Franklyn German and a player to be named later (Jeremy Bonderman) from the Oakland Athletics for Jeff Weaver.
4) Acquired pitchers Gary Knotts, Nate Robertson and Rob Henkel from the Florida Marlins in exchange for pitcher Mark Redman and minor league pitcher Jerrod Fuell.
5) Acquired 1B Sean Casey from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for RHP Brian Rogers
Jury out:
Acquired LHP Dontrelle Willis and 3B Miguel Cabrera from the Florida Marlins in exchange for RHP Burke Badenhop, RHP Eulogio De La Cruz, RHP Dallas Trahern, LHP Andrew Miller, C Mike Rabelo and OF Cameron Maybin
Acquired OF Jacque Jones from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for INF Omar Infante.
Acquired SS Edgar Renteria from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for RHP Jair Jurrjens and OF Gorkys Hernandez.
Acquired RHP Yorman Bazardo from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for OF Jeff Frazier
Acquired OF Gary Sheffield from the New York Yankees in exchange for RHPs Humberto Sanchez, Kevin Whelan and Anthony Claggett.
Acquired RHP Kyle Farnsworth and a player to be named from the Cubs for RHP Roberto Novoa, 3B Scott Moore and OF Bo Flowers.
Worst:
1) Acquired INF Neifi Perez from Chicago Cubs in exchange for C Chris Robinson.
2) Acquired RHP Roman Colon and nonroster RHP Zach Miner from the Braves for RHP Kyle Farnsworth.
Posted by: action000 | March 29, 2008 at 10:31 AM
W.K.:
Best:
Stevens for Phillps
Willy Mo for Arroyo
(You Pick)
Worst:
Nationals Trade, need i say more
In 3 years, the Volquez/Hamilton trade we could look back and see this trade fit in one of these categories, depending on how the 2 careers pan out
Posted by: cincy_11 | March 29, 2008 at 10:32 AM
overall krivsky done a good job on the trade front....although if the category was bad FA signings, i could think of a couple aging Relievers to add to the list haha
Posted by: cincy_11 | March 29, 2008 at 10:34 AM
for Dayton Moore:
Best trade:
Acquiring Brian Bannister for Ambiorix Burgos by far has to be his best trade
Worst trade:
Acquiring Jorge De La Rosa from the Brewers has turned out to be horrible
Posted by: agordon04 | March 29, 2008 at 10:35 AM
A trade that could really have an impact is the stupid trade of Hamilton to the Reds for cash . Why give a division rival another piece to work with ? The Reds flipped him a year later for a starting pitcher , Cuetto (?).If the Reds didn't have Hamilton the Reds would have had one less piece to trade with .Also , the money they spent on Fukudome could have been spent on a starter this year .
Posted by: hawkeye26 | March 29, 2008 at 10:35 AM
Okay yeah I'll definately agree that Hendry giving away Hamilton wasn't a good move. But the Cubs had nowhere for him on the roster with Soriano, Pie, Floyd, Jones and Murton. Nobody thought Hamilton was gonna be this good, and he couldn't be sent down, and they weren't gonna send down Pie at his expense. You can blame Hendry for it, but really it wasn't his fault.
Posted by: scribbletone | March 29, 2008 at 10:39 AM
Theo Epstein
Best trade: Schilling for Fossum, Lyons and De la Rosa. Boston gets 2 rings in Schilling's tenure.
Worst trade: Suppan for Sanchez. On paper it was an ok move, but Suppan explodes and Sanchez goes on to win a batting title. You can't really count Mike Gonzalez as part of this deal because of the circumstances surrounding the deal.
Runner up for best trade: Hillenbrand for Kim. It's not what he got but what he did, This move solves a logjam at 3rd and DH. Billy Ballgame Mueller becomes regular 3rd baseman and wins a batting title. Ortiz drops his demand to be released and becomes the regular DH.
Runner up for worst trade: Gagne for Gabbard, Murphy, and Beltre. Good move on paper, then Gagne's arm falls off. Though honestly the only real loss is Beltre who may or may not pan out.

Doug Melvin has a few exellent trades, and one that is still up in the air, depending on who the Brew Crew selects with the picks they got out of it.
Positives:
-Scott Podsednik for Carlos Lee
-Richie Sexson for Lyle Overbay, Chris Capuano, Craig Counsell, Chad Moeller, Junior Spivey, and Jorge De La Rosa
-Carlos Lee and Nelson Cruz for Francisco Cordero, Kevin Mench, and Laynce Nix
-Junior Spivey for Tomo Ohka
-Lyle Overbay for Dave Bush, Gabe Gross, and Zach Jackson
Negative (pending picks):
-Will Inman, Joe Thatcher, and Steve Garrison for Scott Linebrink
There's also some other deals that are marginal:
-Dan Kolb for Jose Capellan
-Grant Balfour for Seth McClung
There are probably some other deals I'm overlooking, but all in all, I have no complaints about DM. I think he has done a wonderful job in restoring the Brewers franchise.
Posted by: m3th0ds | March 29, 2008 at 10:40 AM
Brian Cashman (Yankees)
Worst:
-Trading Juan Rivera and Nick Johnson for Javier Vasquez
-The Johnson deal
-...and a whole bunch of free agent signings
Best Trades:
-Homer Bush, Graeme Lloyd, and David Wells to the Toronto Blue Jays for Roger Clemens.
-Randy Johnson to Arizona for Luis Vizcaino, Alberto Gonzalez, Ross Ohlendorf and Steven Jackson
-Alfonso Soriano and Joaquin Arias for Alex Rdoriguez
- Trading Jaret Wright for Chris Britton
-Gary Sheffield for Humberto Sanchez and two pitching prospects
Posted by: hawkeyes12990 | March 29, 2008 at 10:41 AM
im not even sure theres an arguement here...
kyle davies for 6innings of octavio dotel.
and if you wanna go old school it has to be the legendary ernie brolio for lou brock(i thinks those are right correct me if im wrong)
Posted by: atlbraves08 | March 29, 2008 at 10:48 AM
Pat Gillick:
Bobby Abreu and Cory Lidle for Matt Smith, CJ Henry, Jesus Sanchez, and Carlos Monasterios....ugh
or how about this great one?
Gio Gonzalez and Gavin Floyd for Freddy Garcia
Pat Gillick has been horrible.
Posted by: ZT | March 29, 2008 at 10:51 AM
Brian Cashman, NYY
Best: Matt Smith, CJ Henry, Jesus Sanchez and Carlos Monasterios for Bobby Abreu and Cory Lidle.
Gets a league-average innings eater and one of the better OFers for nothing.
Randy Johnson for Jose Vizcaino, Alberto Gonzalez, Ross Ohlendorf and Steven Jackson.
Randy Johnson has barely pitched, while Viz provided a year of solid middle relief and a sandwich pick, while Gonzalez and Ohlendorf look to be productive players, as a utility infielder and set-up pitcher.
Worst: Mike Lowell for Ed Yarnall, Todd Noel and Mark Johnson.
A good 3B man for nothing.
Posted by: Croatoan | March 29, 2008 at 10:51 AM
Dayton Moore:
Best - Bannister for Burgos
Worst - Affeldt and Bautista for Shealy (although Shealy could still turn into something useful)
Someone mentioned the Jorge De La Rosa trade as Moore's worst. The Royals got DLR in exchange for a 2 1/2 month rental of Tony Graffanino. Moore was fortunate to get any kind of talented young pitcher for a mediocre utility infielder rental.
Giving up very little and getting very little in return isn't a bad trade.
Posted by: NYRoyal | March 29, 2008 at 10:59 AM
Theo Epstein
Best: Casey Fossum, Brandon Lyon, Jorge De La Rosa for Curt Schilling.
2nd Best: Nomar Garciaparra and Matt Murton for Orlando Cabrera and Doug Mientkiewicz.
Worst: Kason Gabbard, David Murphy and Engel Beltre for Eric Gagne.
2nd Worst: Edgar Renteria for Andy Marte.
Posted by: daniel b. | March 29, 2008 at 11:05 AM
Bill Smith:
Best: Jason Bartlett/Matt Garza/Eduardo Morlan for Delmon Young/Brendan Harris/Jason Pridie.
Worst: Can't really say a worst cause he's made like three trades, but I suppose I could say the Johan trade was worst by default...
Posted by: joeiscool12 | March 29, 2008 at 11:14 AM
Hensry's best trade was Heo Sop Chou for Derrek Lee.
Posted by: Joe | March 29, 2008 at 11:18 AM
For the Red Sox, I have to agree with what Daniel B wrote.
Posted by: Ian | March 29, 2008 at 11:22 AM
Andy MacPhail in Baltimore. All but the Trachsel trade are hard, yet to judge, but I'm positive about all of them. The Trachsel trade, clearly, was a good deal. Moore looks to be a useful player, maybe even a decent starter. Cherry had a good Spring, though he's currently on the injured list. Renshaw, I don't know much about yet. And Trachsel dodn't help the Cubs, and now is back with the Orioles for only money.
Good as Bedard is, I anticipate that deal being MacPhail's best. It remains to be seen, of course, but I think Jones is going to be a star, and Tillman has a good chance to be. Sherrill is excellent, and may bring mire prospects, and the other two pitchers acquired have high upsides. Add that it was likely going to be impossible to resign Bedard, and I think this'll look like a terrific trade in the long run.
The Tejada trade is iffier in the acquisitions, but I'd still rate the deal a positive. Scott should be solid. Sarfate looks very good, though control is still an issue. Albers had a pretty good Spring till his last outing, and is s swing man at the moment, but I expect he'll start a lot of games for the O's this year. Costanzo had a very good sSpring, and has been sent to AAA primarily for seasoning, not for any disappointment in his performance. He has a shot, long term, though he strikes out too much. Tremendous power. Patton, I suppose--who was supposed to be the gem of the deal--has to be discounted at this point. Labrum surgery is tough to come back from.
The biggest plus from the Orioles' point of view, though, is getting good value for Tejada, whom they simply had to be rid of.
Posted by: Playwright | March 29, 2008 at 11:26 AM
For KT...
WORST: Woody Williams to STL for Reggie Sanders. Reggie was good here for 1 year, then went to Arizona; Woody was a perennial 15-game winner for a few years in STL.
BEST: Andy Sheets for Phil Nevin. Nev provided a ton of value in his early years when he was cheaper, and even in his Petco years he was still pretty decent. Sheets went to Anaheim and was never heard from again...
A close 2nd place: the aforementioned Gonzo/Young for Eaton/Aki deal.
Posted by: 322feet | March 29, 2008 at 11:33 AM
Nice idea for a thread, Cork.
Jim Hendry's best trade in my view isn't DLee, it's getting Aramis Ramirez (and Kenny Lofton+cash) in 2003 for Bobby Hill, Jose Hernandez, and Matt Brubeck.
The DLee trade was good, but it's so much easier to come up with a competent or even above average 1b than a 3b. Ramirez has been steady as a rock, and Lofton also helped lead them to the playoffs in 2003. Hill and Hernandez were complete non-factors with Pittsburgh, never driving in more than 27 runs in a season, and Bruback was put on waivers and claimed by the Padres without ever pitching in the majors with Pitt.
At least Hee Sopp Choi was considered a decent prospect at the time of the DLee trade and had 15 hr and 40 rbi in half a season before the Marlins traded him to the Dodgers.
For Hendry's worst trade, I have to give him credit for not getting ripped off in a trade, but he has made some bad moves. The worst trade has to be getting Jason Kendall last year. He was done in Oakland and proved it in Chicago.
I expect that signing Kendall will be counted as one of Doug Melvin's truly worst moves with the Brewers by the end of the season. He has absolutely no power left, the weakest catcher's arm in the majors, and isn't that adept at blocking balls in the dirt anymore. He may call a good game but the Cubs team era went up when he arrived, so his other weaknesses make his pitch calling moot.
Posted by: hemingways | March 29, 2008 at 11:41 AM
Billy Beane's worst trade was not Hudson or Michael Barrett. It was trading Aaron Harang for a rental of Jose Guillen. Harang has been a better pitcher than Hudson the past three years, making a fraction of the money.
Posted by: aap212 | March 29, 2008 at 11:46 AM
For Mark Shapiro:
Best- hands down it is trading Bartolo Colon and Tim Drew for Grady Sizemore, Cliff Lee, Brandon Phillips, and Lee Stevens.
Another good one was dealing Milton Bradley to the Dodgers for Franklin Gutierrez and Andrew Brown.
Another tremendous one was trading Ryan Drese and Einar Diaz to Texas for Travis Hafner and Aaron Myete (I believe it was Aaron)
And let's not forget trading 38 year old firstbaseman Eduardo Perez to Seattle for Asdrubal Cabrera!
Bad- Obviously the Brandon Phillips for Jeff Stevens deal was bad. Too bad players and managers butt heads so many times!
Trading Coco Crisp, Josh Bard, and David Riske to Boston for Andy Marte and Kelly Shoppach. Don't get me wrong, I love Shoppach but the main guy in the deal was Marte and he has fizzled. Coco was an integral part to this offense in 2005 so it's been a disappointment thus far.
Jury is still out- Trading Kevin Kouzmanoff to San Diego for Josh Barfield. I like Barfield but Cabrera took his spot when Josh couldn't hit last year. Kouzmanoff could have been our solution at third but after we traded for Marte he was out of the loop. We'll see how things turn out in a couple years.
Posted by: czechy1000 | March 29, 2008 at 11:47 AM
Scribble,
Good pointing out of the positive and negative trades in regards to Hendry. The Hundley for Karros and Grudz trade is legendary... as well as the Bobby Hill for ARam and Choi for DLee trades. I think we're going to be raving about the Walker for Ceda and Bynum for Hart trades as masterpieces as well in the near future.
Another great trade you overlooked: Neifi Perez for a possible solid backup catcher in Chris Robinson. Hell, Neifi for a set of "throwing towels" for the injury ward that is/was Rothschild's legacy on our fine young arms would be a great trade.
Posted by: Unlitedsoul | March 29, 2008 at 11:50 AM
Too many people are leaving the money aspect out of the trades they are talking about. Also too many jump to conclusions about deals only recently completed. It is pretty hard to judge a deal that we have not even seen the effects of on the field yet. Theo was almost run out of town after the nomar trade but a world series later he is a genius. One trade that might be interesting to see play out this way is the milledge deal.
Posted by: walkoffblast | March 29, 2008 at 11:51 AM
John Schuerholz
Best Trade: Melvin Nieves, Donnie Elliott, and Vince Moore for Fred McGriff.
Runner up: Horacio Ramirez for Rafael Soriano
Worst trade: None really come to mind but how about sacrificing the entire young pitching corps for one season of JD Drew? JD Drew & Eli Marrero for Ray King, Jason Marquis, and Adam Wainwright.
Posted by: Zorak84 | March 29, 2008 at 11:51 AM
Hawkeye26:
The Cubs and Jim Hendry had no interest or plans on selecting Josh Hamilton in the Rule 5 draft. The Reds called up and offered to pay the Cubs to draft Hamilton and trade him to them. It's an easy way to make quick dough. The Cubs did the same thing this year with Tampa Bay and Tim Lahey. Tampa had the first pick, the Cubs offered cash if Tampa would pick Lahey and send him to the Cubs.
Hamilton was a major risk a year ago and most big market teams felt that the added pressure of being in a big city on a team with playoff expectations, along with trying to make it in the majors, could help push him back to drugs. That's why the Cubs and most other teams weren't interested in a guy who basically hadn't played ball in 5 years.
Posted by: hemingways | March 29, 2008 at 11:52 AM
Just to reinforce the great impact of Dave Dombrowski.
Trading Urbina for Polanco, trading 3 prospects for Sheffield, Guillen for Santiago and then getting Santiago back for nothing, and most importantly getting rid of Jeff Weaver for Bonderman.
The worst would definitely be Neifi Perez... enough said. And don't call the Farnsworth for Colon and Miner bad. Miner has been a solid pitcher who has helped out when we needed it.
Posted by: TigerFan54 | March 29, 2008 at 11:54 AM
I think that Josh Hamilton would look great right now in the Cubs center field position, don't you? Missed the boat on that one.
Jim Hendry's Best Trade: Hee Seop Choi to the Marlins for Derrek Lee OR Bobby Hill and some other nobodies to the Pirates for Aramis Ramirez and Kenny Lofton.
Jim Hendry's Worst Trade: Josh Hamilton OR Scott Moore and Rocky Cherry for Steve Trachsel.
I will change his worst trade to Matt Murton after he trades him for NOTHING in the next day or so. If he gets anything of value (which he should) I'll be surprised.
I still say send him to AAA (sorry, it's a business) and wait to use him either in a trade at the deadline for a starting pitcher (which we'll need by then with Dempster and Marquis in the rotation) or when Soriano inevitably gets hurt. We'll be glad that we have him.
But let's just go out of our way to make another team better at our expense! Hendry's great at that lately.
Posted by: TheGrinch | March 29, 2008 at 11:57 AM
Does anyone remember who the Devil Rays got for BOBBY ABREU?
The best trade was Aramis Ramirez AND Kenny Lofton to the Cubs for Bobby Hill.
Posted by: kevybo1 | March 29, 2008 at 11:57 AM
hemingways,
You mention the Barrett for Kendall trade last year as Hendry's worst. Interesting. Did you not figure it out? Almost as soon as Barrett was gone, the team began winning. By the way, Barrett also looked pretty "done" last year as well... and he would be blocking Soto now.
I see it as a lukewarm to decent trade.

Brian Sabean
Best
1) Jason Schmidt and John Vander Wal from the Pirates for Armando Rios and Ryan Vogelsong
2) Jeff Kent, Jose Vizcaino, Joe Roa and Julian Tavarez from the Indians for Matt Williams
3) JT Snow from the Angels for Allen Watson
4) David Bell from the Mariners for Desi Relaford
5) Kenny Lofton from the White Sox for Felix Diaz and Ryan Meaux
Worst
1) AJ Pierzynski from the Twins for Joe Nathan, Francisco Liriano and Boof Bonser
2) Damian Moss and Manuel Mateo from the Braves for Russ Ortiz
3) Shea Hillenbrand and Vinnie Chulk from the Blue Jays for Jeremy Accardo
Conclusion: he made some really good trades to set the Giants up for a World Series run, but the trades since have been either poor or inconsequential.

Nomar Garciaparra, and matt murton 4 orlando cabrera, doug meintkeiwicz, and dave roberts
...and when orlando and meintkeiwicz signed we got draft picks that got clay bucholz

Can't really give Cashman credit for the Abreu deal, because money was the predominant factor there. Still, he should get some credit for getting the asking price down so far and getting the Phillies to give Abreu a couple million to waive his no-trade clause, I believe.
Now - are we evaluating trades based how they actually turned out, or based on how we rate them given the information at the time?
For example, let's say Theo trades Ellsbury for, I don't know, Nick Punto.
Everyone would say that of course, it was one of Theo's worst trades.
Fast-forward 3 years in the future though, and Ellsbury got hurt and never played a game, and Punto hit .290 every year for the Sox, and was a good player.
The end result was that it was a good trade for Theo.
So are we rating based on the results? (I would say yes), or how intelligent the move was at the time?

I know Dombrowski has been mentioned several times, but it's worth mentioning again. Having lived through the Randy Smith era, it's amazing to see acquisitions actually pan out for the Tigers. Dombrowski joined the Tigers in 2002 as President and CEO. After a 106-loss season, he assumed GM duties as well. While trying to blow up those 100-loss a season teams, I remember him telling a private audience "Bobby Higginson makes 12 million a year...try and trade him...Dean Palmer makes 8 million a year...try and trade him... etc etc etc"
The best:
Carlos Guillen acquired for Ramon Santiago and a minor leaguer.
Placido Polanco acquired for Ugi Urbina and Ramon Martinez.
Jeremy Bonderman, Franklyn German, and Carlos Pena for Jeff Weaver
Nate Robertson for Mark Redman
The worst:
Chris Robinson traded for Neifi Perez
Jack Hannahan traded for Jason Perry
Cody Ross traded for Steve Colyer.
In review, Dombrowski has acquired All Star talent several times over without giving up major league talent. His "worst" trades have involved bench players and clearing spots on the 40 man. Pretty incredible considering the landscape of baseball in Detroit before DD showed up-

WK-
Good-
Hamilton for Cash
Phillips for PTBNL
Arroyo for Willy Mo
Bad-
Kearns/Lopez trade, even though our OF is fine, and Lopez is a piece of junk.

John Mozeliak
Has not made a bad trade yet. Edmonds (end of career) for David Freese is good. Just unloading that bad contract leftover by Jocketty is a success.
Rolen (disgruntled with TLR) for Glaus, and getting the Jays to pick up some salary, will be really good if Glaus stays healthy, could be horrible if Rolen gets healthy, but the dispute with TLR was the main issue.

The Rays gave up Kevin Stocker for Bobby Abreu...an awful deal indeed, but that deal was made by Chuck LaMar who is now with the Phillies...poor Phillies.

Kevin Towers -
BEST:
- Adrian Gonzalez, Terrmel Sledge, and Chris Young for Adam Eaton and Akinori Otsuka: I haven't seen a highway robbery of this level in a while for this franchise. I don't know if we would be in playoff contention this year if not for this deal.
- Josh Bard and Cla Meredith for Doug Mirabelli: Theo panicked when Bard couldn't catch the knuckler, and I don't think he would've made the deal if he wasn't under so much pressure. But he did, and we reaped the plentiful benefits.
- Kevin Kouzmanoff for Josh Barfield: While we haven't seen the full impact of this deal, Barfield has already been benched and Kouzmanoff is about to hit third and hopefully become an important part of the Padres' offense.
- Phil Nevin for Andy Sheets: Sheets disappeared, and Nevin became a big home run threat until he moved to Petco.
- Heath Bell and Royce Ring for Jon Adkins and Ben Johnson: Bell is obviously the main positive in this deal, but Ring was decent for us before being traded for Wil Ledezma (who'll be in the bullpen this year after a good spring) and Will Startup who's a decent pitching prospect in our system. Adkins and Johnson did nothing for the Mets, and I think they're both either in AAA or been released.
- Scott Linebrink for Joe Thatcher, Will Inman, and Steve Garrison: The jury may still be out on this one, but the Brewers only got a half year out of Linebrink while the Padres got a great pitching prospect (Inman) and a good lefty reliever (Thatcher) in the deal, so the advantage goes to Towers at this point.
WORST:
- Brian Giles for Jason Bay and Oliver Perez: Giles never really hit for power, and is now the lead-off hitter because he can get on base a lot. He's also likely to be let go after his contract runs out. Jason Bay meanwhile is a top 25 OF and Oliver Perez is a decent starter on the Mets. This deal hurts.
- Ray Lankford for Woody Williams: Lankford didn't do anything, and Williams went on to be a 15-game winner for the Cardinals.
- PTBNL for Jack Cust: Cust would've never played in our OF since he's a terrible defender, and was blocked at first, but getting only a PTBNL is pretty sad.
Other than those three, I don't see too many trades that really hurt the Padres a bunch. All the times Towers traded for players that ended up being crappy, he was giving up equally crappy players.
Posted by: JollyWaffle | March 29, 2008 at 01:01 PM
Williams' worst one ever was probably the Todd Ritchie deal. He really hasn't made a lot of bad trades, but he has made some trades at questionable times.
His best one, IMO, was the Freddy Garcia deal. He made a prospect who busted, a backup catcher and a steroid using AAAA player into 2 and a half years of a very productive starter, helping win the World Series. After that, he turned him into Gio Gonzalez and Gavin Floyd. Floyd has a chance to put together a decent career with the team and Gonzalez was used to get another very productive player on a good deal. He's really made a lot of good trades, even when people questioned them at the time.
Posted by: gogopalehose | March 29, 2008 at 01:07 PM
JP Ricciardi:
Looking at all of his trades, it's pretty obvious that there are no glaring bad trades.
Paul Quantrill for Luke Prokopec and Chad Ricketts is probably the worst, but he was basically dumping salary at the time.
Adam Peterson for Hillenbrand, Vinnie Chulk and Hillenbrand for Accardo were a couple extremely nice deals.
Corey Koskie and his salary for top reliever Brian Wolfe was another nice deal as well. Everyone assumed he would release Koskie but instead got the best reliever in the league against righties in 2007.
Getting Justin Speier for Mark Hendrickson and Ted Lilly for Bobby Kielty were also good moves.
All in all, I think the Accardo trade was the best, but the Wolfe one is up there because of the circumstances. The Quantrill trade was about the only bad one.
Posted by: Grant77 | March 29, 2008 at 01:22 PM
Andy MacPhail's hasn't had a bad one for the O's yet, but his best was....
Luke Scott, Troy Patton, Dennis Sarfate, Matt Albers and Mike Costanzo for Miguel Tejada
Posted by: Oriolefan10 | March 29, 2008 at 01:27 PM
Kenny Williams:
Worst: Kip Wells, Josh Fogg and Sean Lowe for Todd Ritchie.
Best: Esteban Loaiza for Jose Contreras. There have been a few good ones (Jim Thome, Freddy Garcia) but Contreras was the #1 starter in the playoffs in 2005.
Posted by: sean | March 29, 2008 at 01:44 PM
For Kenny Williams I agree on the Garcia and Contrereas deals as good ones.
I didn't like the Thome trade. Sure Thome has had great numbers, but his acquisition to me signaled a change in philosophy from a team that created runs with speed, situational hitting, and the occasional dinger to a team that was full of slow, lumbering power hitters that seems to know only one way to score. Thome's been great, but that's actually my least favorite Williams deal.

Dan O`Dowd
Worst Chone Figgins for Kimera Bartee. wouldn't mind having him at 2B this year
Best Bryan Fuentes, Jose Paniagua and Dennis Stark from Seattle for Jeff Cirillo
Posted by: Pogue009 | March 29, 2008 at 01:56 PM
Ned Colletti:
Best-First one out of the blocks- Andre Ethier for Milton Bradley and Antonio Perez.
Other positives-Elmer Dessens for Odalis Perez, Blake Johnson, and Julio Pimentel (just getting anyone to take Perez was a positive.)
Wilson Betemit for Willie Aybar and Danys Baez.
Greg Maddux for Cesar Izturis.
Marlon Anderson for Jhonny Nunez.
Scott Proctor for Wilson Betemit.
Mark Sweeney for Travis Denker.
Worst: For popularity sakes it was probably Julio Lugo for Joel Guzman and Sergio Pedroza.
Other weak results were: Danys Baez and Lance Carter for Edwin Jackson and Chuck Tiffany.
Jae Seo and Tim Hamulack for Duaner Sanchez and Steve Schmoll.
Toby Hall and Mark Hendrickson for Dioner Navarro, Jae Seo, and Justin Ruggiano.
Overall Ned hasn't used the trade route for major moves. He only utilizes it to move some smaller parts around. Impact players lost in trades: Milton Bradley, Edwin Jackson, Duaner Sanchez, and Dioner Navarro.
Jury still out on: Chuck Tiffany, Justin Ruggiano, Blake Johnson, Julio Pimentel, Joel Guzman, Jhonny Nunez, and Travis Denker.
Impact acquisitions: Andre Ethier, Mark Hendrickson, Wilson Betemit, Greg Maddux, Marlon Anderson, Scott Proctor, and Mark Sweeney.
No Blockbusters in any of these, most player movement has been through his awful free agent choices and our outstanding minor league system.

JollyWaffle, you can't really count the Cust "Trade". It was probably more a favor to Cust from Towers if anything.
Think about it; The Padres, as you said, wern't going to use Cust. Cust was about to go to Japan. He almost signed with the A's that off season (Minor League Free Agent, and had been with the Rivercats before, ironically where he had his worst year or he'd probably have made the team) and here comes along a chance to give the guy a chance to finally play in the Majors, at really the only position you expect him to play (AL, DH). So why not just throw him to the A's for Cash. Its good for the player, and builds your friendship with the other club if the guy does well (which he did) which could lead to another deal down the line.
For the A's, best and Worst trades... hmm... everything is in contxt of course...
Best: Mark Mulder to St. Louis for Daric Barton, Kiko Calero and Dan Haren.
Mulder had an awesome first half, then completly tanked the 2nd half of the season. The Hudson trade setup the Mulder trade, actually, as the Cards inquired about Hudson, then after losing out for Hudson, traded for Mulder and gave up more than they would have for Hudson, as Mulder had 2 years left on his contract, and was a lefty with a less extensive (at the time) injury history.
The A's recieved a top catching prospect in Barton (who was immidietly moved to 1st Base and will be the A's starting 1B this year), a solid relief pitcher who pitched well for two years before getting injured, and Dan Haren, who became the staff Ace and was dealt again for a slew of prospects.
Worst trade; No, not the Tim Hudson trade, that one a) everyone saw coming, b) wasn't a bad package at the time of the deal (Meyer, one of the top pitching prospets in baseball at the time, hurt his arm lifting weights in spring training after being acquired, though I will admit that Beane got suckered in with Charles Thomas). Hudson had only 1 year left on his contract, an injury history, and the A's decided to deal him before he left for Free Agency to his home town.
The worst trade, I would say, was the Ted Lilly for Bobby Kielty trade, which made no sense to me at all at the time, nor since. Keilty was, at best, a platoon outfielder, from the easier side to find (Right Handed). Ted Lilly, was a solid 4th starter. This trade made no sense, for monatary or other. The reason for the trade was that Keith Foulke was playing the A's off the RedSox, to get the RedSox to pay him more money. The A's believed they had a deal with Foulke, so they traded Lilly to clear salary, and Foulke signed with Boston. The end result was Oakland losing Lilly, having to sign the wreck that was Arthur Rhodes, and dealing a no-name for (then non-tendering and signing) Mark Redman, who was only slightly better smelling than his years after leaving Oakland, the same price as Lilly was or more, and pitched much worse.

Somebody above included Shapiro's Crisp et al for Marte et al as a bad trade. You could argue that the trade didn't work out as hoped for either the Tribe or the BoSox but I'd bet that if you asked Epstein if he'd give Coco back for Kelly Shoppach straight up, his answer would be "in a heart beat".
And considering that marte is a near bust but not yet old enough to completely write off, i'd argue that the Tribe got the better of the total deal if only marginally.
Posted by: MickS | March 29, 2008 at 02:07 PM
I think Theo Epstein's worst trade was Bronson Arroyo for Wily Mo Pena. The Red Sox' rotation was torn apart by injuries in 2006, and all Wily Mo did was sit on the bench and stagnate for two years. Then he got dumped for essentially nothing, and now he's starting to show his potential in Washington. There have been other trades that didn't work out (Crisp, Gagne, Renteria), but those seemed really good at the time. Arroyo for Pena was curious at the time, and it's bad now.
As for his best trade, I have to agree that it was Nomar and Murton for Cabrera and Mientkiewicz. Dramatically shored up the defense, got rid of a serious chemistry issue in the clubhouse.
Posted by: Gugs87 | March 29, 2008 at 02:23 PM
DC: as much as the Josh Beckett, Mike Lowell and Guillermo Mota to Red Sox for Hanley Ramirez, Anibal Sanchez, Jesus Delgado and Harvey Garcia is good, you let go Hanley who in 2 years has turned into a top 3 SS in all of baseball and Anibal Sanchez(who threw a No-Hitter) and has good upside but is injured alot to go along with 2 farm pitchers who we havent yet see anything from, its not as good a trade as you would think but none the less beckett and lowell are great players

Bill Bavasi's best:
Erik Bedard for Adam Jones, Chris Tillman, George Sherrill, Tony Butler and Kam Mickolio.
Bill Bavasi's Worst:
Horacio Ramirez for Rafael Soriano.
..and possibly Erik Bedard for Adam Jones, Chris Tillman, George Sherrill, Tony Butler and Kam Mickolio.

How can the O's trades involving Tejeda and Bedard even be considered for best/worst.
Both were for prospects and you still have NO idea how they will pan out.
If anything the Tejeda trade doesn't look very good considering that a key piece to the puzzle was an injured Patton.
Posted by: action000 | March 29, 2008 at 04:31 PM
How do you define worst? A lot of Red Sox fans are throwing out Gagne, sure it turned out bad.
But go to the deadline, they saw a need for a setup man (Okie went down in Sept so they were right)
They then got the best available, while giving up two AAA players, a 4th outfielder, and a borderline MLB pitcher at best, and then a 17yr old kid who has done exactly nothing - there are thousands of those guys around, it was no loss.
To me, that still sounds like a great trade for Theo, he did everything right, Gagne did everything wrong - which Theo has no control over.
Still love the Sox fans who talk as if 2006 would have been different with Arroyo in the rotation, yea he was the saviour in waiting..
Since Theo didn't do the Beckett trade (he left the organisation at that point) his best is Schilling, his worst is Bard/ Meredith for Mirabelli.

Omar Minaya trading Heath Bell and Royce Ring to SD for Ben Johnson and Jon Adkins.

As a couple people have said, Andy MacPhail in Baltimore hasn't had a bad trade yet, although any trade with prospects can go either way. But his best trade to date is -clearly- the Steve Trachsel for Rocky Cherry, Scott Moore and Jake Renshaw deal. Not only did Trachsel utterly fail, to add insult to injury, the O's added him back on a minor league deal immediately. I'm convinced they did it just to twist the knife.

i like this topic. good idea to get knowledge from everybodies home team and fun to remeber all these trades
the cards have one really bad trade, mulder for haren/barton/calero. looking back they would do it again with what was known then but it certainly hasnt worked out.
good trades is a much bigger list
edmonds for bottenfield/kennedy(i think). sold high on bottenfield and bougt loe on edmonds. A+
rolen for polanco and some other guys. rolen has been hurt lately and polanco has really blossomed but rolen was a big part of the 04-06 run.
weaver for terry evans
woody williams for ray lankford
reggie sanders for whoever we gave up
wainwright/marquis/king for rent-a-drew and marrero. this one was as good as the mulder trade was bad.
renteria for i think looper. we originally drafted looper and traded him. other players might have been involved.
these trades represent the core of our team for a 3-6 year period. im going to miss jocketty. he really helped us become a great franchis again like we used to be.

Mark Shapiro – Cleveland Indians
Everyone says his worst trade is Brandon Phillips for Jeff Stevens. That is pretty horrible, but at least Stevens is a solid prospect who some think will close in Cleveland soon. Another trade to think about as Shapiro’s worst is Ryan Church and Maicer Izturis for Scott Stewart. Church would be in leftfield for the Indians and Izturis would be the Indians utility man as the team is shaped now. The Indians in reality will spend about 10 million on David Delluccbag and Jamey Carroll for the next 2 seasons and neither of them are any better than Church or Izturis. Also how much does 10 million mean to the Indians? A lot. Also this means Phillips would not have been traded to make room for, gulp, Ramon Vazquez…he would have been traded away for Izturis which still would suck really really bad but not as bad.
On the flip side everyone seems to say Shapiro’s best trade is Colon for Cliff Lee, Brandon Phillips and Grady Sizemore. Sizemore alone makes this maybe the best trade in the history of the Cleveland Indians but there is a second trade that needs to be looked at. That trade is Einar Diaz and Ryan Drese for Pronk. The Indians would have been happy getting a bag of baseballs and maybe a puppy for the 2 of them let alone the teams number three hitter for 8 years.
Posted by: ntkingsley | March 29, 2008 at 07:07 PM
oh this is such a fun post. heck i dont remember lilly with oakland. and pronk, who was he with? the tigers sure have had som good trades over the last few years. the mets trading kazmir has to be one of the worst all time. everyone in baseball knew kazmir was going to be good. and my cardinals have had some of the best trades. this is fun.

Didn't Hendry trade Dontrelle Willis?
Posted by: Devlsh | March 29, 2008 at 08:09 PM
Often the best trades are the ones NOT made, so we need to give GMs credit for holding on to guys sometimes. JS in Atlanta was awesome at this, as has been TE in Boston.
Posted by: gadamer | March 29, 2008 at 08:33 PM
Beane
Best: Mulder for Calero, Haren, and Barton
Ben Greive for Johnny Damon, Mark Ellis, Cory Lidle
Worst: Hudson deal, Harang deal
Posted by: jclay | March 29, 2008 at 10:39 PM
Devlsh, Andy McPhail traded Dontrelle Willis in July of 2002...to be fair, he did get Matt Clement who helped the Cubs in 2003.
Posted by: crunchy1 | March 29, 2008 at 11:03 PM
He is not a current GM, but former Red Sox GM Dan Duquette pulled off this one:
Red Sox get: Jason Varitek and Derek Lowe
Mariners get: Heathcliff Slocumb
Posted by: FutureGM | March 29, 2008 at 11:14 PM
Edgar Renteria is a minor leaguer, any trade involving him can't be considered bad. He just couldn't deal with the AL. Tigers will see this year that trading for three minor league stars will not do you any good. Willis is a NL fraud so that one might go down as a bad move in a few years.
As far as the Meredith and bard deal for Mirabelli I would like to see those two guys in the majors before consiering it a bad deal. So what if Meredith pitched well in the NL and a pitchers park at that. Josh Bard would have broken the record for passed balls by a mile.
Posted by: slashieboy | March 30, 2008 at 12:25 AM
and I can't believe someone gave Cashman credit for tradng for Bobby Abreu, LOL, He was being shopped pretty much for free as far as prospects go as they didn't want to pay him. A really bad deal for anybody with a limited budget but the Yankee$ get away with it and someone even says its a great deal. LOL.
Posted by: slashieboy | March 30, 2008 at 12:38 AM
No one has mentioned Jim Bowden yet.
Reds trades:
Best: most of the pre-Griffey ones
The one that stands out the most is Dave Burba, Mark Portugal, and Darren Lewis for Deion Sanders
Worst:most of the post-Griffey trades
Any of the various ones where a young pitching prospect was traded for an outfielder when the Reds were loaded at outfielder and depleted at pitcher.
Nationals trades:
Best:getting Alfonso Soriano
Worst:many, however, not trading Alfonso Soriano and just letting him walk was the biggest mistake.
Posted by: quantumfootball | March 30, 2008 at 01:08 AM
I would also agree with one of the previous posters that the ability of retrospect is good for some of these trades because in 2000, everyone thought the Reds got Griffey for much less than they should've. However, now, it seems like one of the worst trades ever.
Posted by: quantumfootball | March 30, 2008 at 01:11 AM
For Shapiro I would actually go a little different:
I think that the Ryan Drese / Einar Diaz for Travis Hafner / Aaron Myete deal is tops. It was basically a salary dump of Diaz to make room for the Victor Martinez/Josh Bard tandem. But Diaz coupled with a low-ceiling pitcher for Pronk and a low-ceiling pitcher? Give up nothing and get Hafner? How can you not love it?
Honorable mention:
~ Bartolo Colon / Tim Drew for Grady Sizemore / Cliff Lee / Brandon Phillips / Lee Stevens from Montreal ~ of course, but we had to give something up here…
~ Milton Bradley for Franklin Gutierrez / Andrew Brown from the Bums ~ I was shocked that we were able to trade the DFA’ed (and kicking and screaming) Bradley for anything, let alone two of the Dodgers Top-6 prospects…
~ Jacob Cruz for Jody Gerut and Josh Bard from Colorado ~ one of my early favs… Jody might have bought his ticket out of town (and baseball until his recent resurface) with his attitude and ability to find the DL, but he was so fun to watch in 03/04 and Bard of course was a solid backup until being upgraded in the Crisp/Marte deal.
~ 39YO Chuck Finley with that nifty 1.538 WHIP and about 4Mil owed for Luis Garcia and Coco Crisp. Really, WTF were the Cards thinking on this one? Doesn’t matter that he did ok for them down the stretch; it comes more in the fact that just taking his contract probably would have been enough. I have to think Shapiro probably giggled after this one…
Worst:
I guess the Phillips deal. But it really was a deal that had to be made because of a roster crunch and his questionable attitude meant that people were not as eager to take on “the Franchise” as some think.
Robbie Alomar, Danny Peoples and Mike Bacsik to the Mets for Matt Lawton, Alex Escobar, Jerrod Riggan, Earl Snyder and Billy Traber didn’t really work out great for either side, but was definitely one which I would do again because it seemed as if atleast 1 or 2 of Escobar/Traber/Snyder would almost have to live up to expectations.
Note, I actually don’t dislike the Crisp/Bard/Riske for Marte/Shoopach/Mota deal at all, but mainly because of the second part that never gets mentioned. It was really more of a 3 team deal, with the Rhode to Philly for Michaels deal being the subsequent move. Crisp wasn’t a Corner OF, was injury prone, and other options were available. JMike + a platoon partner is just fine in his place, meaning we didn’t lose anything to take the chance on a Top-Prospect in the game. Now, we also never really gave said prospect a true chance, and his continually being buried in the minors didn’t help his career any; but when it doesn’t cost much to take that chance then I don’t think its that bad of a move… Plus, its not like Crisp ever cost anything in the first place (See the Finley deal)

KENNY WILLIAMS/WHITE SOX

Worst: (the real no-brainer) Lowe/Wells/Fogg for Ritchie/Evans

Kenny Williams
Best: Freddy Garcia trade
Worst: Lowe/Kip Wells/Josh Fogg for Todd Ritchie and Evans.
I'd like to give an honorable mention to Ray Durham (a type A free agent) for Jon Adkins. That was dumb.

One other trade no one seems to mention for Beane. I think the Mulder deal is the best but this one seems pretty damn good to me also.
Angel Berroa, Ben Grieve, and AJ Hinch for Johnny Damon, Cory Lidle, and Mark Ellis.
