« Conine To Sign One-Day Contract With Marlins | Main | Snell And Pirates Agree To Three-Year Deal »
For the most part, the Indians' C.C. Sabathia continued to deflect questions about his future after his start today against the Yankees, says Andrew Castrovince of MLB.com.
Hounded by the Yankees-centric media, however, the soon-to-be free agent surely launched a jolt of pain through Yankees Nation when he was asked if he likes New York.
His response? "It's all right," he said.
Sabathia continued to maintain with reporters that "in a perfect world," he would want to stay with Cleveland. After all, "I've been here since I was 17."

That's it for me, guys.
Thanks for spending your Sunday afternoon with me. See you next Sunday.

Sabathia will be the last big signing of Brian Sabean's career in SF. He's a local hero, and Sabean set his own precedent for breaking the bank to make a splash with Zito. Plus, C.C. would kill in [Telecom Conglomerate] Park.

This feels like ordering coffee in Starbucks... what's Blase?
Posted by: Luis Salazar | March 16, 2008 at 05:58 PM
Definition of blase from thefreedictionary.com:
1. Uninterested, because of frequent exposure or indulgence
Sabathia will be a Dodger. in '09...

"The Dodgers do have a lot of money coming off of the books in the next two years..."
Dodgers also have a lot of pitchers A) locked up B) ready to be MLers...
With the amount of pitchers Anaheim, SanFran and LA have, coupled with Oaks not wanting to sign the huge dollar/risk contracts ~ well, it eliminates the places he would most like to go if he left. Seattle is semi-close, but they have the same Pitching-Surplus so... When you couple it all together with the fact that he has continually said he doesnt want to leave ~ well...

Both Lowe and Loaiza are free agents after this year. Penny has an option that will probably be picked up, but then he will be a free agent after '09. Schmidt is also a free agent after '09, but it is not known if he can stay healthy enough to pitch for the next two years.
So basically all the starters the Dodgers have locked up for next year are Bills, Penny, Kuroda, and Schmidt. Then after that they have Bills and Kuroda. And Kershaw is the only minor league arm that they know will make a positive impact in the next couple of years.
So I can definitely see the Dodgers going hard after C.C.
Posted by: LADFan | March 16, 2008 at 07:06 PM
If C.C. really wants to play in the West, I can also see the Trolley Dodgers pursuing him. I don't see how they wouldn't, considering their rotation isn't that impressive, and outside of Kershaw, the prospect list of their pitchers is also questionable. Plus, the Giants *do* have a bevy of pitching talent at A and AA that could fill out any open spots in '09. That, of course, remains to be seen. As a Giants fan, I'd have no problem with them signing CC, but when pitching is *not* the Giants actual issue/ problem, what's the point?
On top of all this, after the Giants have a historically bad season, Sabes won't be around to make any signings similar to the bad one he made with Zito.
Posted by: lrs77 | March 16, 2008 at 08:03 PM
the dodgers? uh no. they have one of the best pitching staffs around. penny, schmidt, billingsley, kuroda?, with lowe and loiaza who are free agents but then they have kershaw who could start for them right now if they didnt sign so many guys to bad deals. the dodgers ownership is completely bonehead. so much money, so little brains. and if sabathia says hes not sure about new york wait until the yankees make him an offer next year. i bet hell be singing new york, new york by this time next year. the yankees(kind of like the dodgers) have a funny way of overpaying their players.
Posted by: Joelcards | March 16, 2008 at 08:04 PM
Yankee Nation? No...That's an insult to Yankee fans.
Posted by: mretzloff | March 16, 2008 at 08:15 PM
So, if the Yankees want Sabathia, does that mean that Boston will as well ?
Could we be looking at a rotation of
Beckett
Sabathia
Dice-K
Bucholz
Lester ?
That sounds pretty devastating ... mind you i hope that doesn't happen, as that would be bad for the Jays ! Here's hoping the Dodgers land him !
Posted by: BaseBallz | March 16, 2008 at 08:18 PM
oh now boston wants him. and why because the yankees want him? what? with that contract for wakefield(look it up) he will be pitching for boston until his arm falls off.
Posted by: Joelcards | March 16, 2008 at 08:43 PM
Huh, yeah maybe youre right LADfan…
Only thing, prospect wise I would toss out Kersh/McDonald/Elbert/Adkins as guys who are expected to be probably knocking for the 09/10 rotations, but otherwise…
Posted by: darkstar1661 | March 16, 2008 at 10:24 PM
i guess u r joking here too darkstar. u just toss kershaws name in like hes just some prospect? this guy is the best starter around who wont be with a big league club in april. the dude is straight filthy. and ladfan, u say all these guys r coming off the books after 09. thats why u look for someone after 09, not 08. god, even dodgers fans dont think too much.
Posted by: Joelcards | March 16, 2008 at 11:25 PM
Sabathia would be able to fill the void left by Lowe right away instead of having a bunch of rookies trying to fill the spot. If the Dodgers have the resources to get one of the best starting pitchers in baseball, why not do it?
Posted by: LADFan | March 17, 2008 at 12:54 AM
Yes Theo, lets pass over 27 year old Cy Young award winner C.C. Sabathia because 40+ year old Tim Wakefield is soo much cheaper. Who cares that Wakefield has a 4.76 era. Lets make sure salary takes precedence over quality pitching.
I'm sure the Yankees would do the exact same thing ..... yeah.
Posted by: SierraM | March 17, 2008 at 01:01 AM
kershaw fills the void man. this guy is the best minor league pitcher in baseball. as a dodgers fan i shouldnt have to tell u that. penny, schmidt, billingsley, kuroda, kershaw. the dodgers can sign someone after 09. and just because the dodgers have the resources doesnt mean they have to spend like idiots. remember pierre and schmidt last year. how bout nomar? i am preetty sure kent is overpaid. and the 2 big signings this offseason, kuroda and jones. oh boy. maybe jones can be ok(what is he making 18 mil?) but 12 mil per for kuroda? just cause u have the resources doesnt mean u have to be yankees west. it angers me because the dodgers have so much good young talent that if they spent their money wisely they could be really good.
Posted by: Joelcards | March 17, 2008 at 01:02 AM
and for u sierra, everyone on the team cant make 20 mil per. the sox r paying luxury tax as it is. so 20 mil a season turns into 25. not to mention beckett will want more money. and a 4.76 era for a number 5 starter isnt that bad. if this is what the sox r thinking than why didnt they get santana? because they didnt want to part with ellsbury? no because they didnt want to pay him so why would they pay someone similar money who isnt as good.
Posted by: Joelcards | March 17, 2008 at 01:08 AM
Sabathia cannot be compared to Juan Pierre. Schmidt is a huge question mark because of his health. And Kershaw is going to be only 21 in the '09 season so it would be best to not overwhelm him with innings. Its not like C.C. is an aging veteran past his prime. If I have a Cy Young winner blocking some young pitchers who might not even cut it in the bigs (I'm not talking about Kershaw), then so be it. Just like the cliche says, "pitching wins championships." And a playoff rotation with Sabathia, Billingsley, and Kershaw looks awfully good to me.
Posted by: LADFan | March 17, 2008 at 01:11 AM
u dont mention schmidt or kuroda as in the top 3 yet they will make 30 million combined in 09. this is my point. he wouldnt be blocking young guys, he would be blocking well paid veteran guys. the dodgers make stupid decisions with their money. i didnt compare pierre to sabathia. i used pierres contract and the other bad contracts as an example of the stupid decisions the dodgers have made. the reason i mention those is because no matter where sabathia goes he will be overpaid. u know u really cant defend the dodgers decision making abilities. just be thankful your team has money, if not an intelligent owner and gm.
Posted by: Joelcards | March 17, 2008 at 01:21 AM
When Schmidt signed it looked like a good move. But he has had severe arm problems that he probably will not ever recover from. And Kuroda is not expected to do anything but keep the Dodgers in ball games (a good #3 or 4). So if the Dodgers can get the Cy Young award winner Sabathia then do it. The Dodgers might have to overpay for a few pitchers, but they also have a lot of homegrown that won't cost them much.
Posted by: LADFan | March 17, 2008 at 01:28 AM
yeah they can overpay but if they made good decisions they would have a good team. if kuroda is not expected to be more than a 3 or 4 why did he get 4/48 million? my point. true schmidt might never recover but how on earth do u know that. he might come back this year and be really good. with your shortsighted thinking im surprised the dodgers havent offered u a job in the front office. u would fit in perfectly. once again if the dodgers took that young talent and combined it with good decision making with free agents they would be really good. too bad for u they dont.
Posted by: Joelcards | March 17, 2008 at 01:38 AM
Kuroda was given that contract because that was his market value. My point about Schmidt is that he cannot be relied on as an effective starting pitcher anymore because of his continuing problems with his arm. Now were those signings good? Maybe, maybe not. But a Sabathia signing would be well worth the money.
Posted by: LADFan | March 17, 2008 at 01:46 AM
Santana
Sabathia
Pedro
Maine
Pelfrey
Boom.
Posted by: cityfield5 | March 17, 2008 at 01:57 AM
oh now 12 million per for a 3 or 4 guy is market value? what? schmidt has a season ending injury and now he is finished for good? what? now were those signings good? no. will sabathia be worth the money? double no. please tell me when a pitcher got a ridiculous contract as far as dollars and years(which is what it will take) and it was a good signing. i can name about 50 guys who were bad signings, one of them being schmidt. how bout kevin brown. kuroda. those r just guys who the dodgers signed. there are plenty more case studies to prove my point.
Posted by: Joelcards | March 17, 2008 at 02:24 AM
When asked if he likes 200 million dollars, his response? It's all right.
Posted by: ArodSucksAtLife | March 17, 2008 at 07:53 AM
Alot of teams have some money to spend next year. How about tampa or the braves? Philly has a bunch coming off the books. The mets have several big contracts coming off. Cincy has griffey and dunn coming off. I definately can see texas making a run at him too. I doubt it comes down to just the west coast.
Posted by: SkiBolton | March 17, 2008 at 08:56 AM
Yes, 12 million per year is market value for a 3 or 4, just look at Carlos Silva...And if Kuroda and Schmidt are bad pitchers, like you say (Although I don't know how you can be judging Kuroda who has yet to pitch in a real MLB game), then the Dodgers need good pitchers to replace them. And C.C. is a very good pitcher.
Posted by: LADFan | March 17, 2008 at 10:22 AM
look ladfan, 12 mil is not market value for a 3 or 4. the silva and kuroda contracts along with jose guillen were no question the worst signings of the offseason. and dont say i said things i didnt. i never said kuroda or schmidt were bad pitchers. i said they were bad signings. schmidt got 3/47 mil somehow and kuroda like you said hasnt pitched in a mlb game. think kei igawa. his track record resembles igawas a lot more than it resembles dicek and dicek is overpaid(well he isnt but the sox overpaid for him so same difference). the only thing good about these ridiculous contracts they have been tossing out there is at least most are short term like furcal, schmidt, and jones. kyle lohse was considered a very similar pitcher to silva and he got one year 4 mil. that was a good signing.
Posted by: Joelcards | March 17, 2008 at 10:36 AM
So if they are good pitchers then why is slightly overpaying for them a bad thing if the Dodgers have the money? It won't cause the Dodgers payroll to go anywhere near the Sox or Yankees. C.C. may get paid more than you think he should, but he is a good pitcher (I hope you are able to see that) and would go a long way in helping any team.
Posted by: LADFan | March 17, 2008 at 11:36 AM
I'm not a Cleveland fan, but I hope they find a way to keep CC. I'm so friggin' sick of huge payroll clubs monopolizing all of the established talent. So stick with the Tribe, CC! Or sign with my O's. They've got the money, but don't flaunt it like those obnoxious Yanks or Sox (what? everyone else is talking about getting him for THEIR team). Sure, you'll waste your prime on a team coming off an historic 130 loss season, but if you really want to be perceived as a savior...? Hell, you get us to .500 and you'll supplant Cal Ripken as Baltimore's favorite son- who cares if you're from Oakland (if you've watched The Wire, you'll know that we have supremely corrupt politicians who can fix your birth certificate as easy as a parking ticket). O's 2009- Catch the Mediocrity!

Firstly, you should get off the idea that the Red Sox would be unwilling to move Wakefield for Sabathia. That argument is asinine.
They have Daisuke at affordable dollars for 5 more years. Buchholz and Lester are rookies making basically nothing. Our closer is making short cash as well. The whole purpose of having soo many young arms is to afford a guy like Sabathia.
The Red Sox are not afraid of paying over the luxury tax, they aren't the Royals. I'm sure they will be paying the tax for many years, with or without Sabathia.
I'm pretty sure the only guy in Boston making 20 million is Manny. His contract is now just a bunch of option years.
The Red Sox didn't get Santana because they found out Cashman wasn't giving up Hughes and lowered their bid as well. I believe the main hang up with Santana was about the prospects. That won't be the case with Sabathia.
You should just stick to the argument that the Yankees will blow any offers for Sabathia out of the table. That idea is at least plausible, with their recent string of contracts.

alright ladfan. those guys are overpaid, not maybe. and of course cc is good. he won the cy young. last time i checked u have to be good to do that. barry zito also won a cy young. hes good. is he 18 mil a year good. of course not. and for u sierra, the prospects were not the problem in the santana deal. the problem had two parts. one they didnt want the yankees to get him and two they didnt want to pay him, not only because of the cost but because beckett would then have to be paid even more. and of course the sox r worried about the luxury tax. the royals make money because they dont(or didnt) spend it. not a good example. that tax is real. if they could get cc for two years they would pay anything. the problem is he will get six or seven, and by then they will have to pay a whole lot of guys. once again if they wanted a big time starter they would have gotten santana. i would bet cc will get an even bigger contract then santana got and he isnt as good.

As for Johan Santana, the Red Sox were "in it, with limits." Epstein said he left the Twins with two solid offers, but Bill Smith wanted a package that would've been "completely irresponsible." He felt that Boston's offer was better than that of the Mets.
-----------------------------
If you don't believe him, I probably won't convince you otherwise. Believe what you want to believe. I choose to believe what Epstein said. He wanted to add Santana and will probably try to add Sabathia since prospects are no longer an issue.
Posted by: SierraM | March 17, 2008 at 06:20 PM
haha, after taht comment i feel the red sox nation of sheep are worse than the yankee sheep fans. You don't think the "limits" had anything to do with what cashman was offering by any chance?
