« Giants Plan To Keep Pitchers | Main | Odds and Ends: Jerome Williams, Linden, Lo Duca »
John Lowe of the Detroit Free Press informs us that the Tigers' talks with third baseman Miguel Cabrera about a long-term deal are ongoing. Signing the superstar is the team's top priority.
The popular opinion is that Cabrera will get something in the neighborhood of ten years and $200MM. He's contracted for '08 at $11.3MM and then has one more arbitration year before free agent eligibility. I could be wrong, but I don't know of any athlete other than A-Rod who broke the $200MM barrier.

What was the Beckham deal worth?
Posted by: Dave | March 18, 2008 at 09:23 AM
250MM

Wikipedia:
David Beckham signed a 5-year deal with MLS soccer team Los Angeles Galaxy that was worth a reported $250 million,[1] but that figure included commercial endorsements; only $10 million a year of that figure is salary from the club, while the rest will come via existing endorsements and profit sharing with the club.

That Mike Vick deal is looking really good right now.

If Manny's 2 option years are picked up(at 20 apiece), he'll have made $200M over 8 years

Talkin' bout $200MM+, all guaranteed, not related to endorsements.

Bet he signs for north of $200m or takes less than 10 years.
If he did a 6 year deal at $140m he would hit FA again at age 30/31. Assuming he doesn't completely break down, that would put him in line for another huge contract.
If he goes for 10 years then I don't see him being anywhere as valuable at 34/35.
You sacrifice 4 years of guarantees but stand to make significantly more if healthy.

I'm assuming his agent is Boras but I don't know so anyone is free to correct me. If it is Boras, I could forsee something like what bjsguess said about a shorter contract now or something like ARod (since he's being compared to him anyways) he could put in an opt-out clause for his age 31/32 season.
Two things stick out at me when I look at that Wikipedia list...first, Holy Auto Racing Batman? $51mil a year? Second, Pujols is a STEAL!! Hate the Cardinals but whoever pulled that off should get a bonus every year for as long as Pujols plays (Jocketty probably).

Miggy isn't a client of Boras. I can't remember his agent's name, but it isn't Boras.
As a result, he'll get straight advice, and may well sign an extension. If Boras had him and controlled him, we all know what would happen instead, don't we?

cabrera is represented by sfx(fernando cuza and diego bentz). for all of your contract needs go to google, type 2008 mlb free agents, and go to cots website. its on the first page of the search. this is also how i found this site. and u cubsfan, pujols may be a good deal but he looks even better when 1/3 of your roster is littered with bad contracts. the cubs think they can just buy a championship. u guys better win something this year because when carps back and some of this bad money the cards have on their roster is gone(from injuries i point out, not stupid decisions) the cards will be back. world series 09 baby.

Will be interesting watching the KittyKats try to pay everyone while keeping a payroll under the BoSox/Yanks marks. They are spending like its nothing, and it might make for a fascinating situation a year or two from now…
BTW, is anyone else catch todays Wash/Det game and start worrying about Dontrell? During it they had a sideline interview with him…
Was asked: “You struggled a bit the last two years. What adjustments have you made?” (not exact, but close to the actual question)
Answer: “none”
:\ This of course was followed by a little bit of an uncomfortable silence, which was broken when Willis continued “just continue to work hard like I always have”…

If you're in the Tigers position I say you just wait it out and ride out the remaining 2 years of arbitration. Unless you're getting him for under 17mil a season you're paying free agent prices, so why not just wait it out and hope prices drop, they can't really go too much higher.
Also if he sucks you can just trade him in a year or so.
@Cubsfan81, Pujols contract included the Cards buying out 3 years of arbitration. So instead of getting paid $6 or $7 mil for 3 years and hope to get a payday in free agency, he took the sure thing and took 7/$100.
