Decision Time On Matt Morris

According to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Pirates management met with Matt Morris after today's performance brought his ERA to 9.67.  I mentioned in my recent video mailbag that I couldn't see Morris lasting past June 1st, but it looks like May 1st is in question.  Kovacevic explains the three possible scenarios:

  • Morris goes to the bullpen.
  • The Pirates release Morris, eating more than $10MM.
  • Morris retires, saving the Pirates millions.  But as classy as Morris may be, no one should expect him to leave that kind of money on the table.  It's not his fault Brian Sabean signed him in 2005.

Its also not his fault the Pirates traded for him and took on that ridiculous salary. What were they ever thinking? Did they actually believe it might be worth it???

Dave Littlefield obviously didn't have a clue and now Huntington is stuck with an albatross. The cost, as they say, is already "sunk" so they might as well just release Morris and eat his contract. It's far more important for the Pirates franchise to develop young players than to go through the motions and try to justify past mistakes. If they are not considering themselves to be in total rebuild mode, they are fools.

"The Pirates this morning released Matt Morris and put left-hander Phil Dumatrait in the right-hander's spot in the rotation, meaning Dumatrait will start Thursday in Washington.

Releasing Morris means the Pirates will pay him a little over $10 million, which includes the rest of his salary for this season and a $1 million buyout of his 2009 option.

Right-hander John Van Benschoten joined the Pirates from Class AAA Indianapolis this morning to provide length in the bullpen. It could be that Van Benschoten won't be with the Pirates too long. Left-hander Sean Burnett could be on the way in a couple days.

"It's been kind of a whirlwind morning,'' manager John Russell said. "Matt Morris has been a true professional. He's had a great career. He wanted to help us win, and it just wasn't happening."
