« Padres Interested In Damian Miller | Main | Robinson Tejeda Clears Waivers »
Ken Rosenthal reports that the Mets are close to a minor league deal with free agent righty Claudio Vargas. It's a smart move; they need someone who can eat innings at a league average ERA. Four teams were pursuing Vargas.
Vargas, 29 in May, has always posted a decent strikeout rate. If he rediscovers his control from '06 and limits the longball, he could be solid. No risk for the Mets. Vargas initially balked at the idea of going to the minors, but perhaps he couldn't find any better offers.

Finally.
They needed this especially since El Duque is sidelined AGAIN with a strained tendon in his foot.
I wish the guy would just retire.

Great signing for the Mets. I still have hope for Pelfrey, but I like having insurance. When Pedro comes back he can take Pelfrey's spot now(unless he's doing really well).

Since when is 5.10 ERA the league average? I would also like to know what makes you think Vargas is an innings eater. He could barely get through 6 innings last year on a good day. His only saving grace was that the Brewers gave him the best run support of anyone on their staff, which led to him actually winning 12 games.

i agree with keehno 100 %. i rather give Sosa a shot than Vargas. and ppl need to stop hyping players up so much. it's kind of annoying now

2 things. Vargas will be going into a better pithers park in Shea, and he also had a brutal, dfreadful, awful defense behind him last year with Milwaukee and guys like Braun, Hall, Weekes, Jenkins, Estrada, Fielder etc. Jorge Sosa is absolutely terrible. He cant even get 3 outs at time. Vargas has shown signs and he has decent stuff. Some people will literally complain about anything.

"Everyone on this board pissed on Angel Pagan when he was acquired. He's now our starting LF and doing a v good job. Omar annualy signs 5 guys that NOBODY cares about for absolutely nothing and at least 2 of them ends up making meaningful contributions. This smells like one of those moves. "
People also pissed on Duaner Sanchez, El Duque, Oliver Perez, John Maine, Endy Chavez, Ruben Gotay, Damion Easley, Xavier Nady etc.
When will they learn?
More importantly, when will they stop acting as if losing world beaters Heath Bell and Mat Lindstrom outdoes all the good he has done here.

Angel Pagan? Seriously? Let him play long enough and you'll see he has zero baseball instincts. There are two things Mets fans should expect from Pagan as the season progresses - multiple mental errors and a stint or three on the disabled list.

Which other teams were pursuing him??

I am loving this pickup b/c I don't trust Pelf and think he is a lifetime #5 (unless he develops one or two solid pitches beside his fastball). I think we will still add to the pitching depth throughout the season anyway but this gives us a starter or bullpen help and we could use either.
