Reds Fire Wayne Krivsky

The Reds gave the axe to GM Wayne Krivsky today, replacing him with Walt Jocketty.  It was a short stint - Krivsky was hired in February of 2006.  The move itself isn't a shock; it's just surprising timing.

  • 12-7-06: Acquired Josh Hamilton for cash.
  • 12-7-06: Selected Jared Burton in Rule 5 draft.
  • 12-12-06: Signed David Weathers to a two-year, $5MM contract.
  • 1-2-07: Traded Brendan Harris to Rays for cash.
  • 1-10-07: Acquired Jeff Keppinger for Russ Haltiwanger.
  • 2-6-07: Signed Aaron Harang to a four-year, $36.5MM extension.

  • 11-28-07: Signed Francisco Cordero to a four-year, $46MM contract.
  • 12-21-07: Acquired Edinson Volquez and Danny Herrera for Josh Hamilton.
  • 1-23-08: Signed Jeremy Affeldt to a one-year, $3MM contract.
  • 2-15-08: Signed Brandon Phillips to a four-year, $27MM extension.

  • 3-3-08: Signed Corey Patterson to a one-year, $3MM contract.
  • 4-8-08: Released Mike Stanton.

Looking back on Krivsky's moves, he did a fine job.  While many of his small free agent moves were poor, he made many shrewd trades and smart extensions.

walt jocketty? well, that should be interesting to see. if he pulls this team out of the muck like he did with the cards then the reds should be fun to watch

Well that came out of left field...

why? he held onto cueto and he's pitching well. volquez is pitching well. they still have jay bruce waiting in the wings. what exactly did krivsky do lately to merit getting fired?

Signing Corey Patterson :-)

Wow! It's not entirely surprising. He made some nice moves in his tenure (Josh Hamilton, Brandon Phillips, et. al.), but seemed to be a bit trade happy.

Shipping off Kearns and Felipe Lopez for spare parts (to be generous) really spelled his doom, I think.

I would have liked to see him get a bit more time, though.

The Kearns-Lopez trade had nothing to do with anything. Kearns & Lopez are both terrible so the Reds didn't lose much on the deal. What did Wayne in were all the bad contracts to Cormier, Stanton, Castro, Freel, Patterson, and even Arroyo's extension that looks bad right now. Castellini isn't messing around and when he brought Jocketty in it was only a matter of time.

For all the good things he acquired with Phillips, Hamilton, Arroyo, the farm system not being dealt away etc, there have been just as many bad ones. Majewski, Cormier, Stanton, and the Castro, Coffey, Ross, and Freel extensions.

Also keep in mind that Bruce, Bailey, Votto, and Cueto were already on the team before Krivsky got there. We will have to see if Stubbs, Mesoraco, Frazier, Waring, etc pan out

I feel that the good far outweighs the bad. I updated the post with a history of Krivsky's major moves.

"Signing Corey Patterson :-)"

Signing Dusty Baker.

He's got young arms in the rotation and a base clogger in Dunn and he signs Dusty Baker.

It's all about relationships. Castellini and Jockety go way, way back.

actually krivsky wanted to keep mackanin.

bobby c wanted dusty.

i thought krivsky did a great job. he had to trade for relief pitchin gin '06, he just happened to get damaged goods ...

Kearns and Lopez are not terrible...one bad season does not take away past success, especially before one hits their prime.

The Kearns/Lopez trade was a bad move by Krivsky no matter what they do, because their market value was a lot higher than he players he received.

That said I like his trades as a whole.

its actually pretty remarkable how good his record is... for a GM to get 2 stars (hamilton, phillips) for nothing in just a few years is pretty incredible.

let's not forget, the reds blew terribly when krivsky took over, now they're somewhat respectable

Funny, the Reds are doing much better because of the pieces he put in there. Sure, he made some poor moves, but what GM doesn't? I cannot imagine him being without a job for a long time. I'm sure if he would have stayed in MN, he'd be the GM there right now.

"Signing Dusty Baker.

He's got young arms in the rotation and a base clogger in Dunn and he signs Dusty Baker."

As a Reds fan I can say that Dusty has been very careful with Cueto and Volquez so far, with neither of them topping 100 pitches. Dunn can actually steal some bases a la Matt Holliday if he really wanted to...

His trade record, although prolific, is great. He traded many players who have yet to develop/won't develop for usable talent that has helped make the Reds a respectable team.
This really seems like an unwise move to me. The Pirates would be wise to give him a look. Given his track record and what he was able to do with few resources, it seems like the Pirates would be a great fit. The bucs fans deserve better than what management throws on the field each year. Krivsky could help field a decent team on the cheap since the owner seems unwilling to take his team seriously.

Jocketty's To Do List:
1) Extend Dunn
2) Trade for a decent hitting catcher and can 2 out of Bako/Ross/Valentin
3) Call up Bruce and Bailey, trading one of Hopper/Freel and moving Belisle to the bullpen
4) Get rid of Josh Fogg

I forgot...

5) Get some RH pop for the bench

Krivsky has done alot to the reds in order for them to have made some noise around the league. But making noise isnt enough in the MLB, no need to make playoff noise. The reds have only come close once in recent years. Although Krivsky has done a solid job to this point, I think the way the team has come out of the gates rather sluggish spurred this move. Obviously the on feild play cannot be blammed on the GM but it was the straw that broke the camels back, clearly everyone was pushing for Jockety to take over. Im interested to see what happens, but as a reds fan I do not want to see krivsky take over a team from the division, he has potnetial to put together a winning team

Volquez has thrown 112 & 105 pitches his last 2 starts, but it's hard for him not to considering how wild he can be. I think the base clogger comment was a crack at Dusty, not Dunn.

4-7-06: Acquired Brandon Phillips for Jeff Stevens.
12-7-06: Acquired Josh Hamilton for cash. (from the Cubs I believe)
12-21-07: Acquired Edinson Volquez and Danny Herrera for Josh Hamilton.

These are 3 excellent moves, and there are no absolutely terrible deals. This team is built to be a contender possibly this year & definitely next year (there's money coming off the books in Dunn & maybe Griffey).

Tim, and others....Looking back at the Reds/Nationals Trade..i think you have to put it into perspective....at the time of that trade, it was the trade deadline, and the reds needed RP.....to get RP they had to give up quite a bit....Majewski's stats for the year were pretty impressive at the time of the trade, he just happend to be injured, and not pan out afterwards.... Plus the reds at that time, had way to many OF, and no place for Felipe to play

The problems with Krivsky are his FA signings and extensions. Aside from extending Harang and Phillips for incredibly cheap $, everything else has been just awful. Keep Krivsky in the scouting department and let someone else handle the cash.

well...Clayton, made up for Felipe's absenteeism for the year at least

The problem with the Kearns/Lopez trade is that he didn't get market value for them. When Bray is healthy he is actually very good, but Majewski is just a lost cause...

Majewski had an ERA of like 3 prior the trade that year...and 2.5 the year before...he was good prior to the injury.

People forget this guy was part of "the trade"

Take a look at his numbers, he might be the best player from it.

and dont forget bray and thompson are still developing.....Thompson the suprise of all...is tearing it up in the minros this season

haha dang mark, u beat me to it

I really dont think this Move had as much to do w/ Krivsky's performance, as it did w/ the 2 didnt get along personally, and Jockety is an old friend of Bobby C

I have loved Wayne Krivsky's trades but it's all about those signings. Corey Patterson for $3 million when no one else wanted him. I also think of Jorge Cantu who was released in order to make room for a Rule 5 Draftee who was returned quickly. Cantu is currently batting .350 against LHP, something the Reds have struggled against.
The Reds also can't keep changing GMs since it removes pretty much all of the business management in the organization every two years.

The Nats trade really isn't THAT bad looking when you see Bill Bray is efficient when he can be healthy. Also Daryl Thompson is lights out right now. 23.2 innings pitched with 2 earned runs and 25 K's to 1 walk.

The trade failed in what it attempted but could still prove to help in the future.

Krivdawgs biggest problem was signing bad extensions and FA's. Castro WAS needed at the time of signing. But when Lopez was traded his role became useless. He jumped the gun on Ross while he was in the midst of his best offensive year ever. Although I guys you can say that didn't flop because Ross came back not hitting but was extremely good defensively.

Basically he had a few GREAT moves, some ok moves and many flat out awful moves.

Do any of you Reds fans remember why Brendan Harris was moved for cash to the Rays? Was he blocked by Phillips?
He's hitting quite well for MN this year...

as an idiot on John Fay's insider blog used to post in regards to Castellini.... What...jocketty hasnt made the reds a better team yet.....WAKE UP CINCY FIRE JOCKETTY

Seeing as how the Pirates just put new management in place I seriously doubt they will look into Krivsky. In regards to Krivsky's firing I think it's flat out silly. The Lopez/Kearns trade wasn't that bad, he thought he was getting a stud reliever in Majewski and two good pitching prospects. There is a reason Cincy tried to void the trade since it turned out Majewski was damaged goods. He had one solid season under his belt and was only 26. In all I just think it's really not fair to Krivsky to can him after such a short time when he was building a strong team.

Krivsky was pretty decent as the Reds GM.The trades listed weren't that bad. He did well sending Bruce down along with Bailey. But that Patterson signing did hurt the resume a bit. Could've been influenced by Baker on that signing though.

Ned Colletti should be next in the unemployment list.

I'm surprised. Though I'm convinced he could've gotten MUCH more for Lopez and Kearns AT THE TIME, overall I thought Krivsky's record was good. And in the cases of Phillips and Hamilton, brilliant!

He also had the cajones to trade Hamilton for promising young pitching, and also the cajones NOT to give up the farm for Bedard or Blanton.

As for the signings... I agree there were bad ones... but doesn't the owner have to sign off on all those too?

I'm a biased Jays fan, but those list of moves look excellent.

As a Giants fan I'll take Krivsky over Sabean, now that he's available and Sabean's still a chump-- off with his head!

Seems to be very little patience overall in Cincy. Managers are always changing, and now the GM is out after just a bit over 2 years on the job? They haven't had a couch stick around for longer than 3 seasons since Pete F'n Rose.

Sabean used to be pretty good, back in the day. He's just been terrible the last 3 or 4 years. But no matter how much you bash Sabean, trading Matt Morris for anything and not paying any salary was either the one of the luckiest trades ever, or he still has a bit of genious in him.

I don't think this move has as much to do with what Krivsky didn't accomplish... but more about the reputation of Jocketty. Jocketty is a very good GM. I think overall, Krivsky did a solid job. One person mentions his giving up Kearns and Lopez for spare parts. The problem is, Kearns and Lopez are spare parts. Plus, Lopez is a clubhouse cancer. Neither has done particularly well since being traded to Washington.

His big moves were picking up Phillips, Aorroyo, and Hamilton. He still has the prior two, and Hamilton brought forth Volquez. He also made good moves by not trading a few top prospects for someone like Bedard, as was rumored this offseason.

He hands the team over to Jocketty in much stronger shape than when he got it.

As a Cub fan, I watched Brendan Harris in his early minor league career. Harris isn't that good at SS defensively, but he is good at 2B and 3B. the Reds have Harris at 2B, and I believe Edwin Encarnacion is a better player overall, with greater upside, than Harris at 3B.

That's probably why he was sold off to TB.

Harris was useless once the infield of Encarnacion-Gonzalez-Phillips was set.

In my opinion, losing Brendan Harris didn't make much sense... but 8 days later he traded for Keppinger and that has the look of a master stroke at this point.

Keppinger is better than Harris. (And the word is Harris is a lousy fielder. Keppinger appears to have a very steady glove, and decent range.)

Harris - .275/.333/.417 in 768 PA

Keppinger - .313/.367/.446 in 559 PA

Tim, I have to disagree with you that Kearns/Lopez had higher trade value than what Krivsky got. As I recall, there was a market for Majewski before the world realized he was damaged goods. The market for Kearns was stagnate at best, primarily due to the fact that he simply could not keep himself on the field. Lopez had one truly good season with the bat, and was (still is) viewed as a terrible defensive SS. Before the trade, Lopez was beginning to tank... showing his one good year was more a fluke than the norm.

I do not recall there being much of a market for either Kearns or Lopez at the time (at least not in terms of any real value), but I do recall a market for Majewski. I'm not the expert that you are in this regard, however. For Krivsky to get Majewski and a decent pitching prospect in Thompson (prior to Majewski's health issues being known) for an oft-injured Kearns and a dwindling Lopez seemed like a decent deal at the time.

Oops, for clarification, that should say "the Reds have Phillips at 2B".

In my opinion, Tim nailed it. Kearns and Lopez had much more value at the time. (I don't mean now... I mean at the time... July 2006.)

Kearns was healthy and was the Reds everyday RF. He was batting .274/.351/.492 with 16 HR and 50 RBI a little past halfway through the season.

Lopez was healthy and was the Reds everyday SS. He was batting .268/.355/.394 with 9 HR and 23 SB.

I'll agree w/ you that Lopez's defense was and is bad. But still... he traded 2 out of his 8 everyday players... off of a team that was in contention!

Majewski had shoulder problems and got a cortisone shot in May 2006 that was public knowledge -- if memory serves it was reported in the Washington Times!!

Daryl Thompson was in A-ball at the time. I hope he pans out and makes this a win for the Reds.

Anyway... the point I'm trying to make is that based on the players' values AT THE TIME Wayne got hosed.

I really don't remember a trade in the last 10 years that got as widely panned, on the day it went through. And that was BEFORE Majewski went down.

(And overall, I actually think Wayne did a good job! But I think this trade was awful. I did 2 years ago and I do now.)

Looking at most of this guy's moves, I see the makings of a rather good GM, especially for a smallish market.

Dunn, for all his faults, can yank the ball out of the park and take a walk. As for having young arms in the rotation, who cares? All this Joba Rules garbage is getting ridiculous. Pitch counts should be going up, not down and players with strong arms should be out pitching. This is especially true if they have a fastball with movement, they should just be aiming at the catcher's glove and firing, limiting the breaking stuff to a minimum until they get older and lose some zip. Clemens threw 254 innings at 23. Maddux threw 249 at 22. Smoltz threw 208 at 22. Look at what Rivera did early in his career out of the 'pen. Let them throw.

Krivsky's abrasiveness is what got him canned. He lacks the relationship skills to be a successful GM over a long period of time.

Aside from the high upside guys, Cincy's roster this year is a mess. Two LH 1Bs, Two RH 5th outfielders, 3 catchers, just DFAed 2 guys, need to DFA another (Fogg). Ownership wants to win now, and these are relatively small moves considering the talent that is on this roster. The current roster problems were evident sinse spring training and its been a month and no resolution.

We have a deep farm make this team win now dammit, let's bring up Bailey, trade Hatteburg and Freel, get a RH bat, solve the catcher problem, and dump Fogg and Coffey.

Why is Coffey still playing in the major leagues?????? Why did Juan Castro make the roster out of spring training?????

Looks like this just a case of being in the wrong spot at the wrong time.

If it was anyone other than Walt then I would have been very disappointed.

Thanks Tim for putting together the list. Wayne actually did a very nice job with the circumstances he was given.

One thing I will never forget about Krivsky is the fact that he signed david weathers to an extension. Anyone who has ever seen him pitch knows that he is not worth keeping to sell hot dogs during day games. the fact that it wa sonly recently he "went on the DL" discusts me. Hopefully Jockety realizes this and wont let him back with the team. I mean come on, DANNY GRAVES was a better closer. And in terms of todd coffey, hes not as pathetic but another one that the sooner we can get rid of him, the better

And with josh fogg, everyone knew he wasnt that good when we signed him. Thats why it was only for 1 year 1MM, we might as well get what we can out of him. Im in favor of exploring options for blanton still. Why not offer them freel and one of our catchers?

Offering Freel and one of our shitty catchers for Blanton is the most ignorant thing I've ever heard.

Jocketty will waste little time making a splash. I predict he'll acquire a decent front-line catcher within a month. It's the Reds most glaring need, and it doesn't make "sense" to change GMs if the new GM doesn't do something to justify the move.

And I still think Homer Bailey for Jarrod Saltalamacchia is the way to go.

I hate Typepad...

If Salty isn't ready to play in Texas what makes you think he's ready to play in Cincinnati? Norris Hopper was just placed on the DL and David Ross was activated. I'd say the team's most glaring need is a power RH bat off the bench. Going after someone like Brandon Inge (who could also catch) or Joe Crede isn't a bad idea.

Salty was so ready to play for Atlanta that they had him playing first when McCann was catching. He isn't playing in Texas because Texas is a terribly run organization. The could help Cincy right now.

I would rather have a starting rotation of Harang-Arroyo-Volquez-Cueto-Bailey and allow our #1 pick last year to continue to develop than trade away Bailey for a weak defensive catcher who is most likely to end up as a 1B...

I think this move will lead the wave of backpedaling positive sentiment for Krivsky. I've always thought of him as a bad GM, but actually looking back over his tenure, he really did a mighty fine job, unless you blame him for Majewski being hurt (which some do; I don't see that one fairly can).

To comment on Saltalamacchia -- while wondering how we got from Wayne Krivsky to Saltalamacchia -- he was ready to play (hit) in Atlanta, when they wanted to pump his trade value. He is not ready to play (catch) in Texas because they think his defense needs work, and since he's a prospect and a player to the Rangers (as opposed to a commodity/trading chip to the Braves), I think they're right in their judgement.

Exactly, which is why you should never even think of trading Bailey for him.

If the Reds are going to trade for a Catcher, then Bengie Molina of the Giants makes the most sense. Molina is a Right Handed hitter who does VERY WELL against Left Handed Pitchers, something the Reds DO NOT DO WELL AGAINST. I have been campaigning for Molina for over a year now.

Molina is a better hitter than either Ross or Bako and a better defender than Bako or Valentin. In fact, Javy Valentin is nothing more than a Designated Pinch Hitter.

The Giants are not very good and have plenty of areas that need improvement. They have young Pitching, which I am sure they don't want to trade away to fill those holes, so getting rid of Molina and his $6 million dollar salary would be a good thing for them.

For seven years now, the Reds have been LOSERS and for seven years Adam Dunn and KGJ have been the centerpieces of the team. In fact, they are the ONLY constants over that time period.

The Owners have changed. The stadium has changed. The GM's ahve changed. The Managers ahve changed. The Hitting Coaches have changed and the Pitching Coaches ahve changed.

The ONLY constant has been the Home Run first approach as far as the Offense goes.

During the second half of 2007, the Reds hit LESS Home Runs but the average Runs per Game went up. This was because the team BGating Average went up and they hit more Doubles.

These things happened after Norris Hopper and Jeff Keppinger (two GOOD hitters) were inserted into the top two spots of the order and Brandon Phillips was moved from the two hole to the clean up spot.

Until Ca$htellini comes to realize that GOOD ball players are needed on the team, he can change GM's and Managers as much as he wants but the results will still BE LOSING.

The Reds overpaid for Cordero and traded Hamilton away for Volquez to try and improve the Pitching staff. They also brought up Cueto. WHat has been the results? LOSING!! Why? Because of the Offense, "led" by Adam Dunn.

Different guys have been put in front of Dunn and behind him to try and get him going but it hasn't worked and will not likely work in the future because Dunn IS NOT A GOOD HITTER (or Defensive player either, for that matter).

I think trading Bengie makes more sense to us than it does to Sabean and the rest of the Giants' FO (not a value judgement there, just a statement on the likelihood of a Bengie trade actually coming to pass). Word locally is that the pitching staff really likes him (KNBR in particular seems to be really big on Bengie). Anyway, it's extremely unlikely that the team would be able to address any of its significant holes with a deal centered around Bengie Molina, especially considering how much he's making... they're much farther away from being decent than they can even begin to repair with a single move.

Saltalamacchia doesn't HAVE to be a solid defensive catcher. I've heard comparisons to Mickey Tettleton tossed around, and that seems fair. There are plenty of catchers with mediocre to poor reputations who lack Jarrods offensive upside.

The Reds should keep one defensive catcher as a backup and starter when they play running teams like the Mets, and play Salty the rest of the time.

Saltalam... you know who... can grow with the Reds organization along with the plethora of young talent. And why the love for Bailey? He hasn't done anything except earn a reputation for being difficult. And not all pitchers reach the ceiling originally projected for them. Still, his Texas roots hold appeal for a team that has been pitching starved, and the Rangers are knee-deep in catching talent. It represents a solid fit.

Put that way, it actually starts to make sense. Create an offense/defense platoon in Cinci, and you know Texas would go for Bailey. Not so farfetched, maybe.
