Boras Discusses Oliver Perez

Scott Boras represents impending free agent starter Oliver Perez, who might be in line for a huge payday if he can have another decent year.  John Delcos has heard speculation of a five-year, $60MM starting point.  If Perez can post a sub-4.00 ERA in '08, that price will probably be exceeded.  Boras was in L.A. yesterday, giving reporters his typical spin.  To hear Boras tell it, Perez is not erratic and compares favorably to Johan Santana at the same age.

Perez, Jon Garland, Mark Prior, and C.C. Sabathia constitute the under-30 free agent starter group.  Perez will be 27 in August and is the youngest of the group.  All four have their flaws, but at least Perez is healthy and won't require $100MM.

Boras doesn't plan on negotiating during the season with the Mets.  We know how he operates - if Perez has an off year and that huge offer doesn't materialize, he'll probably find his client a one-year, $12MM deal and hope for a rebound.

Boras is kidding, right? Oliver and Johan is the same sentence as comparing favorably makes no sense.

C'mon, Scott, stop, please. Anyone with two eyes who has seen them both pitch knows that's an inflated and outright lie.

boras == delusional. he can see oliver underperforming in his contract year and he's in damage control mode.

but some team out there may still give oliver that contract based purely on potential, regardless of his numbers at this season's end.

Uh, if Boras is hoping for 1 year, $12mm, he might ask his client to stop walking six batters every nine innings ...

At 25, Johan Santana won a Cy Young Award. Perez hasn't even made an All-Star team.

Its funny how everytime a Boras client is going to hit free agency, and he is talking them up as much as he can (which is his job by the way, and he is sort of good at it too), people act all offended and appalled that he would dare conmpare Oliver Perez to Johan Santana. We got through this like 2 or 3 times a year and everybody is freaking out calling Boras a moron and an idiot. And at the end of the day Boras always gets his guy a big pay day, which is what he is supposed to do. It doesnt matter if he has to tell people that Oliver had an arm injury like that kid from rookie of the year and now he throws 118 MPH easy. His job is to get his guys paid, by any means at all. I dont understand why people act this way every year. You should be used to it now.

According to baseball-reference.com, Perez compares more favorably to Ryan Dempster. Sorry Boras, anyone who believes you is INSANE.

People really dont get it. If Boras makes these outrageous comments, and there is even one GM who buys into it even a teeny tiny little bit, he has done his job. If they all laugh at him and say he is full of shyt, who cares? A lot of you seem to think it is funny or that Boras is embarrasing himself when he makes these sorts of statements. Well, it doesnt matter if he is embarrased or not, he does his job very well, and he does what it takes for his clients. I think Boras would run through Dodger Stadium in a little pink thong if he thought it would get Perez more money, and I dont think he would care that people make fun of him. He is laughing straight to the bank.

Anyone who thinks Boras is an idiot needs to review his commissions.

These are the same people who say that Boras embarrassed himself with A-Rod this year. Yeah - real embarrassing. He gets A-Rod extended 7 years at $30m/year with not another single team bidding for his services.

Boras is a genius. Laugh now but someone will pay big pucks for an under performing Perez.

I think a lot of teams would jump at one year, $12MM for Perez.

For the record, Henry Rowengartner is in fact Mark Prior and Boras is the agent that got him paid.

While Boras may not be an idiot, his statements certainly are idiotic.
