To be fair, Mulder only said he would retire if it had to come down to either that or another surgery. The article says the Cardinals team doctor doesn't think that is necessary.

I think its sad what has happened to Mulder. It might be best for him to just shut it down for the rest of the year. He isn't going to really help much this year anyway...lets be realistic.

I'd be thrilled with Bay or Nady. Both allow Alou to get regular rest, and Nady can fill in at first when Delgado (hopefully) gets released.

And let me say for the record, I don't expect Heilman to be nearly enough for either of those guys. I hate to lose any more youngsters, but you get what you pay for. You can get Millar for Heilman, but then again, it's Kevin Millar.

"David Murphy believes that the Phillies have enough starting pitching to get to the playoffs, suggesting that there is no need to seek a pitcher in the trade market."
This just in: David Murphy also believes the sky is green, grass is blue, and Santa, the Tooth Fairy, and the Easter Bunny all get together for Backgammon on Feb. 30th every year.

“Paul Hagan is reporting that the Mets are interested in acquiring a first baseman and/or a corner outfielder.”
Considering that the team doesn’t have the deepest of systems to pull from, but the ability to spend cash ~ they might be better off looking at the salary-dump guys before players who will completely empty their minors. Guys like Giles and Winn can probably be had much cheaper prospect-wise than Bay and Nady (who the Rats are apparently holding out for a lot on).
Millar might work though, and would be a nice RH platoon for Delgado ~ ideally lighting the fire under his rear to where he goes into his second-half “I gotta keep my job” resurgence a bit early…

Hey stellar, hows it goin pal. Just checking in from the Harry Potter forums. :)
I agree, I have a feeling Omar is fed up with Alou and will look hard into Bay. I have felt this way for a few weeks but really dont know what we could use to get him. This is just my gut, but I dont think Heilman. He is the key to the Mets bullpen, in my opinion. Maybe Pelfrey and and some of their low level prospects could get it done. I would hate to lose more kids also, but, really, if its not Fernando Martinez, and you can get Bay, go for it. The Mets pretty much are pot committed for this season with the moves they made this winter. Might as well push the rest of your chips into the middle and go for it all. Maybe if the Mets can make a move for Bay, they can get Alou to stick a 1B glove on his hand and learn the position and you can have Alou getting a game or 2 in the OF and get games at 1B against lhp. I know Alou is old and brittle, but he can still flat out mash.

For Bay or Nady, I say send whoever you need except F-Mart.
Millar, on the other hand, isn't worth it. I think some type of Pascucci/Valentin platoon could put up better numbers than Millar, and wouldn't need to be acquired.
With Evans not hitting a lick since his debut, I think it's Pascucci time. Especially with Pagan still hurting.
Release Delgado, DL Church, bring up Valentin and Pascucci.

I agree, I wouldnt pay such a steep price for Nady, but for Bay, yes. Pelfrey, Niese and some lower level talent, or some of the really young foreign talent possibly. I agree on Millar. I would take him if he came very cheap, because he is a decent to solid bat, and supposedly everybody loves the guy. I also think it is Pascucci time, but I also am thrilled with the idea of getting the stache back up here. Keep the fire near Castillo so that he has to keep up his play, and get Valentin's bat and glove into the lineup when Castillo's knees are barking. He also was a great sort of mentor for Jose Reyes. Like I said before, if they somehow pick up Bay, it might end up where Alou takes some time at first base to keep his bat in the lineup. The Mets are still walking a fine line between potential juggernaut/ potential overpaid mess of a team. It all depends on whether they can stay healthy.

I can't believe a team actually signed Jose Valentin. Even more, I can't believe that anybody would think he is an upgrade over pretty much anything on the Mets major league roster.

…Gonna make for a long couple years if they do and still come up short…

Can we stop waiting for Delgado to be released? He's improving, just had a recent stretch of 3 straight games with a home run, a hit and a run scored last night and a fine defensive play. He's not the Delgado of 2006 but by no means should he be released. Especially not if Scott Hatteberg or Kevil Millar are the replacements.

... Julio Franco is still available.

Its going to be a long couple of years anyway. They have to revamp their system and quick, and atleast Bay could potentially stick around for another few years. You trade for Bay without moving Fernando, and you have the following pieces in place for atleast the next 4 years. Beltran, Bay (I am assuming they lock him up if they make a move for him), Church, Wright, Reyes, Santana, Maine. That is actually a pretty solid core of guys, then you have to hope to draft well fill the other holes internally.

Nady would be a huge boost offensively and defensively in Right, but I think people are being a bit harsh on Delgado. He has had a slow start, but the last 4 weeks have seen significant improvement, especially when it comes to collecting extra base hits. Eating his salary AND wasting Nady defensively at First is a bad combo.

I love Rany's proposal (assuming German can play some short).
Soriano
DeJesus
Lee
Ramirez
Fukudome
Soto
DeRosa
Theriot

I just dont think the Mets have enough pieces to trade considering that other teams will be trying to trade for Bay also. About the only people that think that Pelfrey is good is the Mets fans and thats it. Yes Pelfrey is young but about all he has is a good fastball. Maybe he can be a future closer but he is stinkin it up starting thats for sure. Thats funny Niese, Pelfrey and a low minor leaguer for Bay. Just about ANY team could blow that out of the water with ease. Heck the Braves could easily match that. Although I dont know if we can afford Bay. Now Nady is a different story you guys might be able to get Nady with Heilman and Pelfrey. The only way I see the Mets getting Bay is with Fernando Martinez and I seriously seriously doubt Omar would trade him.
Maybe a Chuck James(He aint great but he is better than Pelfrey and at least he has had TWO good years in the majors compared to Pelfreys ZERO and right now I think James is hurt that is why he has struggled this year), Brandon Jones, and Lillibridge. haha I wonder if the Pirates would want to reaquire Lillibridge? Either way thats a far better package right there than a Pelfrey and Niese deal. The only way the Mets could smoke the Braves for Bay is if they put F-Mart in the deal but thats unlikely. But of course I dont know if the Braves can afford Bay. And I seriously doubt that that is enough to acquired Bay anyway. But right now we have Diaz(on the DL right now) and Blanco in RF. Well basically Blanco in CF and Anderson in RF cause Kotsay is on the DL.

“Its going to be a long couple of years anyway. They have to revamp their system and quick,”
Looks like I’m not going to be calling my father for a couples years then ~ or atleast will have to be extremely selective when I decide to dial that number… Yeah, he’s a fan; and hardly ever in a good mood anymore… I worry sometimes; afraid he might snap and end up shooting Randolph or something if he happens to run into the man…
“but I think people are being a bit harsh on Delgado”
…Agree. Infact said in the Hatteberg thread that he did the same thing last year before turning it on in the second half as well. He needs to be benched (like he was this week) and probably more permanently lowered in the lineup ~ releasing him might be jumping the gun though…
“Thats funny Niese, Pelfrey and a low minor leaguer for Bay. Just about ANY team could blow that out of the water with ease.”
…I know the Indians would be all over it if that was the rumored cost…

Delgado's Splits
Last 7 days:
.250AVG/.304OBP/.600SLG
Last 14 days:
.220AVG/.298OBP/.463SLG
I haven't watched him play much this season, but just looking at those numbers, they look alot like what he's put up overall:
.222AVG/.301AVG/.389SLG
The Mets really can't expect to compete with a non hitting 1st basemen and banged up corner outfielders.

I'd like to see the Royals and Cubs work out something for DeJesus but I hope they don't trade Cedano. He really looks like a different player at the plate this year. I think he's turned the corner. The Cubs have a nice "problem" with all the infielders theyve got.
Posted by: reprisal | May 30, 2008 at 08:21 PM
How about this:
The Royals trade: David DeJesus, Esteban German, and Zach Greinke to Chicago.
The Cubs trade: Felix Pie & Ronny Cedeno and Donny Veal to Kansas City
Great for both teams
Posted by: uww1 | May 30, 2008 at 10:22 PM
uww1, you've lost your mind. Greinke? Seriously< Greinke? No way that happens. Here's my proposal: Dejesus, Gobble, and German for Murton, Cedeno, and Jake Fox. That's the deal we're likely to take.
Posted by: royaldaddy | May 30, 2008 at 11:12 PM
Yeah, I have to say that Rany's trade proposal stinks.
Why would the Royals give up two useful MAJOR LEAGUE players AND a prospect for two unproven players who have yet to put up any sustained success in the bigs?
When prospects are traded for major league players, the team giving up the prospects usually give up MORE players to acquire established major leaguers. Touting Pie and Cedeno's higher "ceiling" completely overlooks the equal possibility that they'll never reach that ceiling and may not amount to squadush.
Posted by: Devlsh | May 30, 2008 at 11:37 PM
What about Frank Catalanotto to the Mets? He can play 1B and LF and has been hitting the ball well as of late. Blalock is on the shelf for 4 weeks...so the Mets may have to wait for the Rangers to move Cat...but I think they could work something out there.
Posted by: SteveBuechele | May 30, 2008 at 11:49 PM
Braves need Nady for LF.Lillibridge plus two or three high prospects for Nady and Snell.
Posted by: 5953Smith | May 31, 2008 at 01:11 PM
Matt Murton
Posted by: Aduncaroo | May 31, 2008 at 08:34 PM
I'm not sure why the Cubs would want DeJesus, a centerfielder with little power, little speed, and an okay batting average and on base percentage. German would be the worst player on the Cubs major league roster. If the Cubs are going to make a trade, they need to aim a little higher.
Posted by: thklein | June 02, 2008 at 12:04 PM
thklein,
I'm with you. There is no reason to mess with a team that has the best record in the majors, has won 10 in a row, and keeps mashing. If they are going to make a trade and mess with the chemistry they already have, it has got to be for a #2 type starter. Anything else, unless its for a star, makes no sense. Edmonds and Johnson have proven so far to be a fine outfield platoon, and every other position is mashing.
