« Odds and Ends: Viciedo, Broussard, Rincon, Threets | Main | Tomko Designated »
A reader writes in with news of a minor transaction heard on ESPN 1000 radio. Reportedly, the Cubs have signed first baseman Ben Broussard to a minor league deal.
Broussard did play ten games in left last year, so it's conceivable the Cubs could try him out there down the road before Alfonso Soriano returns.

Seems to me that Josh Kroeger was a more viable option to bring up in Soriano's absence, even though he's not on the Cubs 40 man roster.
Kroger is batting .285/.358/.483 in AAA. Not sure what his MLE would be, but he seems like he deserves a shot.

Why not bring up Murton?
Posted by: touchmymonkey | June 12, 2008 at 12:30 PM
The buzz on this now is that it's a minor move, and he won't be added to the 25 man roster. It's more likely that either Kroeger or Murton will be called up along with Hoffpauir, and Broussard will remain an option in Des Moines.

wrong and wrong guys. Cubs called up Patterson and he is starting in left. i like the Broussard signing, cheap and can't hurt to try. nice to be deep in aaa

bring up murt and Hoffpauir. Give murt the job for three fours weeks... let him build some trade value and then move him for whatever you can get for him because quite frankly he doesnt have a hope of every really playing for the cubs. That is sad, but it is the truth, Soriano and Kosuke are gonna be there for a long time.
The Broussard thing can only be explained in that Ward is really hurt. Lou wants an experienced left handed bat and that is broussard. Hoffpauir is great, but he doesnt have that veteran presence that Lou is so enamored with.

How can they not just bring up Murton and give him a shot in left? I think a lot of Cubs fan would want to see that, and its arguably their best option anyways. He would actually add even more patience to their lineup, and is probably worth giving a chance.
SS Theriot (R)
RF Fukudome (L)
1B Lee (R)
3B Ramirez (R)
C Soto (R)
CF Edmonds (L)
2B DeRosa (R)
LF Murton (R)
This is probably the best we can do without Soriano. But if Edmonds doesn't work out in center (he's been heating up lately) then this team will desperately need at least one more lefty in its lineup or it could be an issue.

"The Broussard thing can only be explained in that Ward is really hurt."
...I think its that coupled with them trying to keep him away from a threatening team, ie StL who might be looking for a stop-gap 1B right about now...

when you are the best team in baseball you dont bring up a guy to let him build up trade value. you bring up the guys that are swinging the hottest bats at that time to keep the team rolling. plus both guys are left handed which the Cubs are currently enamored with.

Bonds plays left....and he's patient at the plate. What a perfect fit!
At least then Bartman won't be the most hated guy in Chicago.

scribbletone, that "keeping him away from STL" comment is a great point. Probably worth the money just to keep the Cards from trying it.

I get that they have the best record in the majors but:
They really need to stop batting The Riot 1st or 2nd. He's going to come back down to earth any day now. Someone also should tell him that he isn't very fast and maybe put up the red light.

Bonds is interesting. I dont like him but if hed help kill the 100yr drought then im for it. Think of this lineup when Sori gets back.
LF-Soriano
CF-Fukudome
1B-Lee
3B-Ramirez
RF-Bonds
C-Soto
2B-Derosa
SS-Theriot
P
Thats a pretty tough lineup

“I get that they have the best record in the majors but:”
…Its always frightening when a team gets an extremely hot start while having issues or doing so mainly because of players performing above their ability. Its also difficult to really determine what areas you need to tinker with since overall numbers can be skewed quite easily because of the lack of playing time.
That being said, I don’t think they should move Theriot down because he was a much better hitter last year than his overall numbers imply. He took so much grief from all the Cubs fans over the offseason because of said overall numbers (to the point I almost felt like an apologist for him), but he was hitting about 290/360/380 in late August before a September crash. He is pretty much the teams best options for the 1-2 spots, whether he should be expected to see a regression or not… Do agree with the “red light” thing though...
Oh and:
“scribbletone, that "keeping him away from STL" comment is a great point”
…Not that it’s a big deal or anything, but I think I said that…

Theriot has a 79% carrer stolen base rate. He was 87.5% last year. He may not have blinding speed, but he sure isn't slow. I think he just needs to pick his spots a little better.

You guys were talking about it so:
“Micah Hoffpauir, 1B, Chicago Cubs Thursday 6/12, 12:17 PM CT
Infielder Micah Hoffpauir has been recalled from Triple-A Iowa, according to the AP. The team also optioned right-handed pitcher Kevin Hart to Iowa.
Hoffpauir hit .421 over 19 at-bats in his previous stint with Chicago this season. He is expected to start as the Cubs' DH when they play the Jays on Friday in Toronto, and could see regular time in that role during inter-league play at AL parks.”

Broussard will probably share time with Micah Hoffpair at DH for the next couple of weeks. Then, we can send him to the minors, release him, or keep him as a replacement for Darlye Ward while he's hurt.

Who catches the ball in the OF? Love Fukudome, but not CF longterm.

Agreed Studio. And Soriano would be in right field, Bonds in left. Sori isn't a good outfielder, but he has better range and a better arm. Either way, believe me, I don't think its happening. Plus, the platoon of Johnson and Edmonds is working beautifully...and the Cubs keep winning. I don't think you mess with anything, and certainly not by brining in a guy as bad in the clubhouse as Bonds is. Can you imagine his moods knowning he is going to trial in February? Not what this team needs...

The Patterson call-up makes sense in light of what Aduncaroo just said, "I don't think you mess with anything.." Patterson fits nicely in left and in the leadoff spot and causes no disruption to the rest of the lineup...Theriot stays at second where he's an excellent fit (good speed, takes a walk, excellent bat control) and Fukudome stays 5th, where despite his lack of power, isn't a guy that pitchers are eager to pitch to. Broussard is a good move as a backup plan and I agree there may have been some gamesmanship with St. Louis. I'm also not convinced Hoffpauir has major league power yet, something you'd like to have from a first baseman/corner OFer.

I concur, but here is to hoping that we are both wrong about Hoffpauir. Good to see ya crunch!
