« Heyman's Latest: Mariners, Brewers | Main | Mets Add Andy Phillips »
According to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pirates acquired 27 year-old reliever Denny Bautista from the Tigers today for 23 year-old minor league reliever Kyle Pearson.
Bautista seems like a reasonable project for the Bucs to toss into the back of their bullpen. Bautista averages 94-95 mph with his fastball, but five organizations have already given up on him.

He's only 25, he's got time to figure it out. A lot of relievers don't become consistent until their late-20's anyway.

He's actually 27 and will be 28 in August, but he can't be any worse than Frankie Osoria, so the Bucs might as well give him a shot.

My mistake on his age, thanks.

Can't be any worse than the garbage we already run out there. So we'll take Tomko, Vinnie Chulk, pass on Jeff Weaver, although maybe in a pinch. We need to shop at the pitching surplus store. Throw a couple hundred against the wall and somthing's bound to stick.

He's exactly the kind of low-risk, high-reward pitcher the Pirates need to take a chance on. In the NL, in a less pressured environment than Detroit, he could work out. Or, if he doesn't, he'll get cut and the Buccos will move on.
One question, though: who takes Dumatrait's spot in the rotation? Bullington? JVB? Adam LaRoche? (you know he's still begging to pitch; I say let him try, he can't be much worse of a pitcher than he is a hitter)

He's sure ridden being Pedro's cousin to an unexpectedly long major league career.
