| Davidoff: Sabathia Not Likely For Yankees »
By Tim Dierkes [June 17, 2008 at 8:57am CST]
Who's in the running to replace Bill Bavasi in Seattle long-term?
- Interim GM Lee Pelekoudas is in the running. But as Bavasi's former righthand man and assistant GM, he'd be an odd choice.
- Tigers assistant GM Al Avila was considered for the Mariners' job back in '03 and would love the opportunity.
- Keep in mind that the long-term GM will probably not be hired until after the season. Ken Rosenthal speculates on Brian Cashman, Kevin Towers, A's assistant GM David Forst, and D'Backs director of player personnel Jerry Dipoto.
- Statistically Speaking discusses the Chris Antonetti possibility (he's Cleveland's assistant GM).
- Larry Stone has all sorts of ideas. Aside from those already mentioned here, he tosses out Pat Gillick (unlikely), Gerry Hunsicker, Kim Ng, Dan Evans, Bob Watson, Peter Woodfork, A.J. Hinch, Tony LaCava, Jed Hoyer, Ben Cherington, Jim Duquette, and Paul DePodesta.

Listed below are links to weblogs that reference Possibilities For Seattle GM Position:
No mentions of Logan White thus far? I continue to be amazed that a man with his eye for talent gets overlooked for GM positions.
Antonetti, Ng, or Hinch woulud be intriguing.

And after the season, hopefully Minaya will be looking for a job as well.

following up on stellars comment why dont the mets look at brian cashman as the GM after the season
Posted by: CJ88 | June 17, 2008 at 09:50 AM
Because he's not a good GM?

Interesting that Jack Zduriencik wasn't mentioned on these rumors. These are not even good rumors.

I thought Dan Evans could be interesting. I personally think he started the whole rebuilding process in LA and hired a few of the guys mentioned in this thread (most notably Logan White). Someone who is a Dodgers fan will most certainly correct me but I was surprised when he was let go.

What about Wayne Krivsky? Brandon Phillips, Josh Hamilton and Edinson Volquez have to be counted as three of the best transactions in recent years.

Trade you Brian Sabean for some used sunflower seed shells!

“Trade you Brian Sabean for some used sunflower seed shells!”
…Ahh, trying to sell high I see…

Im suprised Brian Sabean isnt on that list. If he doesnt lead the team in a direction after the All Star Break he'll more then likely be gone.

"Larry Stone has all sorts of ideas. Aside from those already mentioned here, he tosses out... A.J. Hinch"
...does he mean the A's and Royals catcher from a couple years ago? Isnt he still playing in the minors somewhere?
Posted by: darkstar1661 | June 17, 2008 at 01:02 PM
I like Forst and Dipoto both have been around solid rebuilding and youth movements for awhile and that is what this team needs. They have the skill to know young talent and have seen what it takes to make good trades.
These guys are 1A and 1B.
But you all may forget or not know, that Howard Lincoln and Chuck Armstrong will put hand cuffs on whomever they get, no deals longer than 3-4 years and it is better to patch with old guys than do a full youth movement.
Whomever gets this job MUST state at the begining and have it in writting that they have full control to do what they deem fit to make this team better again, or the M's are in for more of the same no matter who they bring in as GM..

"Im suprised Brian Sabean isnt on that list. If he doesnt lead the team in a direction after the All Star Break he'll more then likely be gone."
Except for the fact that he signed a 2-year contract extension last year.
"...does he mean the A's and Royals catcher from a couple years ago? Isnt he still playing in the minors somewhere?"
No Dark, he's currently the director of personal for the D-Backs.

No Finch has some sort of position inside the D-Backs system. Head of Player Development or something like that. I've heard him mentioned during a few interviews with Byrnes and he always talks VERY highly of Hinch and his ability.
Krivsky is interesting and I'm not going to say DePodesta wouldn't be good but I still think Evans should get another shot.

Dave Littlefield is a free agent. lol

Looks like Forst has come a long way from being the video room guy described in Moneyball, huh?
Anyways, I think Paul DePodesta deserves another shot at being a GM. He didn't get his fair due with the Dodger's.

Redfan, I agree with you. The Mariners should go get an established GM like Krivsky. Better than putting a guy who has never done it before in there. Krivsky was never that bad anyway, in my opinion.

“No Dark, he's currently the director of personal for the D-Backs.”
…Interesting. I do remember hearing his name mentioned from time to time for stuff ~ just couldn’t remember for what (hence think he was prob still playing). Quick move up the later though; I see he was playing as late as 2005 and now all of a sudden he could be in the hunt for a GM gob. He must be quit the guy…

Antonetti is sticking in Cleveland, the rumors of him being kept last off season with the promise of Shaprio's job are more than likely true (Shapiro is rumored to be moving to team president). But I do agree that the Mariners need to take a non traditional approach, and someone like DePodesta fits that mold. Didn't get a fair shake in LA and was highly regarded in Cleveland and Oakland.

"And after the season, hopefully Minaya will be looking for a job as well."
So you are rooting for your own team to miss the playoffs? You're more pathetic then I thought.

DePodesta is a definate no way for the M's...check out prospect insider Churchill has a great read on the M's....
Minaya would be a bad fit aswell he did great bringing up some young guys but held onto and added guys that were on the down turn and that killed the Mets...M's have had too much of that the last 5+ years...
Krivsky is not even on the M's reported short list right now...
Names more likely:
Jed Hoyer BOS
Logan White LAD
Forst A's
Dipoto D-Backs
Tony Bernazardo NYM
Larry Bienfest Fla
John Ricco NYM
To name a few...

"Except for the fact that he signed a 2-year contract extension last year."
With Magowan leaving Sabean's job is no longer safe, not to mention our new owner isnt too fond of him.
Posted by: JaCoby Shaddix | June 18, 2008 at 12:59 PM
Here'd be the people on my short list.
-Tony LaCava
-John Ricco
-Al Avila
-Charlie Kerfield*
*Only if Gillick were to be hired as President.
