Angels Balk At Price For Holliday

Bill Shaikin of the L.A. Times does not expect the Angels to swing a deal for Rockies outfielder Matt Holliday.  Trading young pitching is generally against the Angels' philosophy.

Shaikin says the Rockies would demand prospect Nick Adenhart for starters, and the Angels might consider that.  However, the Rockies also want Howie Kendrick and one of Ervin Santana or Joe Saunders.  The Angels wouldn't give up that type of package for Miguel Cabrera last winter, and they won't give in for Holliday.

I've defended Holliday in many MLBTR chats; I think he is capable of a .900 OPS away from Coors Field.  But based on the rumors, the Rockies are asking for too much for a year and two months of him.

What exactly are the Rockies smoking???
With a price like that, there's no way they really want to trade Holliday

So maybe Matt Holiday is J.D. Drew without the defense, and the Rockies want Adenhart, Kendrick and Santana/Saunders for him and the right to pay him 14+ million bucks a year. Sweet, I'll tell all the EEI toolboxes to stop calling in for him to replace Manny.

Hey Angel Fans... what about Bay or Nady to Angels? what kind of deal could we get for that?

Im sure with Bay it would be Adenhardt and another legit prospect. So i am curious to your thoughts?

"Trading young pitching is generally against the Angels' philosophy."
When was the last time they traded ANY young prospect?

"When was the last time they traded ANY young prospect?"

Alexi Casilla for JC Romero

None the less, Matt Holliday should not command an All Star Pitcher, a Type A Prospect and a second baseman that has never hit under .300 in his baseball life.

Couldn't have said it better ^^

I have to agree that the price for Holliday in reference to the Angels is absolutely ridiculous. A potential future batting champion, one of two possible 16-18 game winners this year, and a top-notch pitching prospect for a year and three months of someone who will most likely test free agency?

Besides, I don't think that the Angels would pull a trade for an outfielder even if power is a big need in their lineup because they have way too much depth there.

Requisite Rockies Viewpoint:

You guys have to realize that we're basically giving up our offense here. Holliday is the sole driving force behind our offense, and having him in the lineup makes all of our other mediocre hitters (Atkins, Hawpe, Helton, Spilborghs) look a lot better than they actually are. If and when the Rockies trade Holliday, the return better be damn good, and the FO knows it.

That being said, asking for Adenhart, Kendrick, AND Santana/Saunders is just way too much. I'm really glad that Dan O'Dowd is being forceful here, but he needs to show a bit of intelligence too.

I do expect my Braves and the Angels to commence on some talks about Teixera. The Angels were one of the other main competitors last year, and of course they have the prospect depth to pay a good price to get him. With that being said, here is a scenerio I could see Happening...

Angels get: Mark Teixera and Will Ohman

Braves Get: Adenhart, Kotchman, and one of

Brandon Wood/ Jose Adarondo/Sean Rodriguez/Juan Rivera

Now, before i get called a homer and an idiot in 15 different ways, let me rationalize. A week or so ago, I had figured the braves could get max value by trading away Tex and Ohman in seperate deals, but the Angels may be the most reasonable partner to trade both of them two. The angels of course have a need for a run producer, and they get it in tex, while they also could use an effective LOOGY, which they get in Ohman.

The braves want an elite pitching prospect and controllable 1b for Teixera, and the angels have an ideal combo in adenhart and Kotchman. I understand kotchman's dad is with the angels, but I just do not really see that being an obstacle if the Angels feel they can replace kotchman with a piece like Teixera. On top of that, the emergence of Saunders and Santana give the Angels a young core to support Lackey, so Adenhart might be more expendable now than he was in the past.

Now, as for the third piece to a deal, that is where it gets interesting. The Braves love young power arms in the pen (who doesnt), so with the depth of righties in the Angels pen, the Braves wil probably as for young Jose A. first. However, as I will probably get pointed out to me, he is the Angels most controllable arm, and perhaps after Krod the most talented. And with Krod likely to be gone after this season, he probably is understandbly nearly untoucable.

As a result, the braves probably would love to get there hands on another young potential hitter in Rodriguez or Wood. Of course, I would love to get Rodriguez based on his potential at the middle infield position, and sense the angels do have alot of depth there, I would ask for him next. However, if he is not available, wood I think could be the most reasonable third addition to this deal. The guy needs a change of scenery. He reminds me a as being Andy Marte's identical, a guy who absolutely mashed the ball and was an uberprospect until pitchers made the adjustments on him, of course exposing a major flaw that he could not adjust back. While he has stuggled, I still think he has a hell of a future in front of him, and would love to put him in left.

In regards to that, the braves have expressed interest in a dependable OF bat to put in left, and Rivera could be a possiblity for that. I do understand that he has increased his role with the Angels, so he may not be a possible target. However, the braves have had interest in him in the past, so he could be a fit.

So i guess my final proposal would be this:

Tex and Ohman to the Angels
for
Kotchman, Adenhart, and Wood/Rodriguez......

Let the roasting on me begin....

You all know that asking price will go down!! They want to see who is honest about their offers. . think about it, it would be just plane stupid for them to just let him go(and 2 draft picks). I say they should want someone who is goin to step in NOW or next year, and a top pitching prospect. . thoughts?

One other thing...

I can understand that the Angels may be a bit hesitant on Tex because he can just be controlled for two months, a deterrent win compared to Holliday, Bay, and Nady. However, that being said, him being controllable for a shorter period of time could mean he might be the most reasonable target because he would cost a more reasonable price in terms of prospects, and also the angels probably are one of the teams that could possibly extend Tex in the offseason.

And AA, again, before you come in here with your idiotic comments about how Kotchman is nearly Tex's identical.... He is nowhere close. BA is fine, but the ability to get an Elite run producer and a better defenseman (the gold glove and year after year numbers prove Tex may be the best defenseman at first in the game) in Teixera thrawrts any attempt you try to make in comparing the two.

The Comparison on D....

Teixera has a.995 career fielding percentage to Kotchman's .997....

Now, before you get all excited... lets consider a few points.....

A. Teixera has started 864 career games to Kotchman's 289, so i believe that is more than enough compensation to say that Kotchman still has some playing to do to be considered a superior defender.

B. Teixera also has thrown into those 864 games 50 starts at other positions, including third, LF, and RF, so his past versatility at some harder positions than first show how good of a defender he truely is.

And oh, the batting average arguement of yours.....

.280 for kotchman to .273 for Tex.... Now lets go look at all the other stats, plus the fact Tex is one of the most feared second half sluggers in the game, to see who truely is much better than the other....

Nobody is going to trade for Tex.

300/30/100 is not worth the prospects for a rental or the prospects + cash if you sign him long term, if it's coming from first base.

And the idea you can package him with Ohman to land even more quality is just laughable.

No it is not at all laughable...

I agree, Tex is not worth what the braves paid for him and is not worth 23 million for his production at first. However, to the Angels, as he was to the Braves last year, he would be worth it, simply because those numbers that Texiera can produce are what could seperate the Angels from a division winner to a World Series champion. In this scenerio, it is what Tex would mean to the current lineup of the team he is being traded too, not what his value is compared to all the other first basemen in the majors. Reason why is because Teixera will directly impact the performance of the Lineup he becomes apart of. So to gauge Tex's value should be based on how much he would improve the Angels lineup, not how much he should be worth when compared to other 1b. And the same goes with Ohman..... The Angels could use a Lefty to get out lefties down the stretch, and Ohman right now is one of the best avaliable, and probably the most reasonable.

Tex is worth exactly 2 picks if the Braves hold on to him. Kotchman alone is worth more than that. He is a former first round pick contributing in the bigs today.

Kotchman for Tex is about as much as I would pay for a rental. Maybe a low level prospect as well if necessary. No way am I giving up anything crazy in addition to Kotch.

And yeah - Colorado is absurd with their proposal. No way the Angels would even consider something like that for Holliday. A package built around Adenhart is fine. Throwing in Kendrick and Santana like they are some average players is just absurd.

"The braves want an elite pitching prospect and controllable 1b for Teixera"

Kotch isn't a "controllable 1b" since he prefers to sign year to year. - http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/05/locking-up-youn.html

Actually, Kotchman is a controllable first baseman. The braves have the rights to him if they were to receive in a trade for at least two more seasons, because I do not believe he will be a free agent till after the 2010 season. He does not have the service time to become a free agent, so therefore whichever team holds his rights controls him.

The year to year status is based on the fact that Kotchman wants to receive max dollar value for his services year to year. He will receive that by going to arbitration for the next two offseasons i believe. The thing is that while his salary will be negotiated, its not as if he can just leave the angels for another team. He still is controlled by the angels, its just that he does not want to sign a long term deal to lose out on some money, and also probably does not want to lose any years of free agency.

On the Holliday thing, they either have no interest in trading him OR they are absolutely nuts. Kendrick is one of the top 5 young players in the league when it comes to pure batting upside, and he is a very good defensive player. Saunders and Santana are right up there with Lee, Doc Halladay and K-Rod in the Cy Young race. Reagins and Moreno should do nothing but raise a big middle finger at this proposition, particularly with a guy who has proven to be less than prolific in pitcher's parks.

Bravesbeast, it looks like you still haven't grown up and stopped calling people names

"better defenseman (the gold glove and year after year numbers prove Tex may be the best defenseman at first in the game)"

Tex's 2 GGs are all well and good, but he isn't in Kotchman's league. The only 2 who compare are Loney and Youk. Tex is handicapped by being right handed.

"The year to year status is based on the fact that Kotchman wants to receive max dollar value for his services year to year. He will receive that by going to arbitration for the next two offseasons i believe."

Wrong. Kotchman has not arbitrated yet. This year will be his first.

".280 for kotchman to .273 for Tex...."

You are including years in which Kotch bounced back and forth and was sick with mono.

"Kendrick is one of the top 5 young players in the league when it comes to pure batting upside"

That's not true.

"'Kendrick is one of the top 5 young players in the league when it comes to pure batting upside'

That's not true."

Really? And where do you get that? Other than his aversion to taking a walk (see Ichiro and Gwynn for others who have/had no real compunction toward walking), how is his talent not apparent? He has 20 2B in only 53 games this year, while hitting .316. He had a career minor league average of .360 and SLG of .571, combined with the speed to steal 20-30 ever year.

AA...don't bother. Everytime someone brings up Kendrick around here, the masses seem to laugh him off. Last time I read a discussion in the comments here about him, someone called him "a nice little player" who has "probably reached his ceiling."

People apparently judge how good a player is on how many times his name gets mentioned on Sportscenter, and not on what dozens of scouts can attest to, along with a mile long credential sheet in minor league (and now Major League) in statistics. The guy makes contact with everything he swings at, and he hits it hard.

He could easily win half a dozen batting titles in his future with pretty damn good power to boot.

you guys are correct, howie kendrick is a career 360 hitter and scouts expect him to hit 320 for his career in the bigs. in my opinion hes untouchable for the angels because he solidifies their 2nd base and either leading off or hitting 2nd. for the most part, his doubters really just dont know much about him. hes a class talent and a class guy and he should be with the angels his whole career. 20 hrs and 30 stls are attainable once he matures a little bit.
