Graziano's Latest: Dunn, Putz, Laird

Time to check in with Dan Graziano of the Newark Star-Ledger.

  • Graziano calls Adam Dunn "the man without a rumor."  Even with his flaws this one is hard to figure out.  [UPDATE: SI.com's Jon Heyman is finally hearing a couple of teams are in on Dunn.]
  • John Maine's rotator cuff strain has the Mets looking at pitching.  Graziano suggests names like Livan Hernandez, Paul Byrd, and Jarrod Washburn.
  • The Mets have talked to the Tigers about Scott Schoeneweis.  They'd have to replace him, maybe with Arthur Rhodes or Eddie Guardado.
  • The Mariners will listen on J.J. Putz, but he won't come cheap.  The Cardinals and Red Sox have interest.  Putz is signed through '09 with an option for '10.
  • The Yankees and Marlins have asked about catcher Gerald Laird, while many teams like Jarrod Saltalamacchia.
  • The Braves are willing to trade Will Ohman and Mark Kotsay.

From Jon Heyman:

Finally, there appears to be some action on Reds slugger Adam Dunn. An NL source says at least two teams are expressing interest in the formerly unwanted star. Dunn is the Major League leader in home runs (over No. 2 Alex Rodriguez) and walks (over Todd Helton) over the past five years. Maybe somebody's finally realizing that.

For goodness sakes, the Twins should just give Hernandez up. And damn it...just saw that my name says "Twings". Oh well...

Typo(s)...?

"The Mets have talked to the Tigers about Scott Schoeneweis. They'd have to replace him, maybe with Arthur Rhodes or Eddie Guardado."

Unless I've missed something, Schoeneweis is still with the Mets, Rhodes is with the Mariners, and Guardado is with the Rangers. Where do the Mets and Tigers come into play...?

Just thought I'd point that one out. Keep up the great work, Tim!

Please excuse the above comment. After re-reading a few times, it makes perfect sense...just stated in a round-about way.

...long day at work...

:)

He's just saying that the Tigers have a possible interest in Schoeneweis, but if the Mets trade him they need a replacement in the bullpen which they don't have in-house.

I wish the Mets would persue Dunn, I don't understand the lack of interest, if Ryan Howard were available the entire league would be interested and they have very simmilar stat lines the main difference being RBI's which to a large degree could be explained by the potency of their respective lineups. I know he is flawed but I think he would be an upgrade for many teams in the league.

Could it be that Dunn has blocked trades to any of the teams in contention that can afford him ? He does have a contract clause that allows him to select some teams he can't be dealt to. Maybe instead of the norm of blocking bad teams with no money, he blocked the good ones with lots of money ?

I think Dunn wanted to eliminate trade rumors around his head this year, and go into free agency with no strings attached.

I would also like the Mets to go after Dunn, I believe he is the best option for cheap. He has legitimate power which is what the Mets needed, but now with Delgado coming on maybe the Mets have shied away from Dunn

Who cares if he's lefthanded. He's the closer that the Cards need.

Dunn is an interesting target for the mets. he has a lot of upside with his 30 homeruns (1st in NL), 72 rbis (t-9th in NL), 76 walks (1st in NL), .931 OPS (10th in NL), and .548 SLG (11th in NL). but, he also has some downside. he isn't a great fielder, he strikes out alot, and is very unclutch. also, he's a left handed hitter which isnt a great fit for the mets.
speaking of left handed hitters has any one heard anything about aubrey huff? i mean i know he hasnt played outfield in a while but he has but up some great numbers this year in baltimore.

Why hasn't anybody stepped up for Dunn?

1) Maybe because Ricciardi poisoned the water with his (truthful) comments. Just imagine what would happen if a contending team traded ANYTHING of value for Dunn and he then proceeded to tank Offensively like he has a history of doing in September (which is the start of football season and which he did when the Reds were in contention in 2006). Just think what the writers and fans would be SCREAMING. Probably things like, "see Ricciardi was right, he is a bad ball player who Strikes Out too much and who chokes under pressure".

2) Maybe Bob Ca$htellini has told Walt Jocketty to ask for the moon and stick to it so, even if teams are interested in Dunn NOBODY will give up what the Reds want. Why do this? Because Ca$htellini has a well known man-crush on Dunn and probably gets a ginormous boner when he thinks and talks about him and also because if Ca$htellini stupidly decides to sign Dunn to a big dollar, long term contract, he can honestly say that nobody wanted to trade the Reds what they wanted for Dunn. Which would be like me having a clunker of a car and asking $150,000 dollars for it because I don't REALLY want to get rid of it. However, if somebody were stupid enough to give me that amount in cash....

3) As far as the Mets go, maybe the reason they have shown no interest in Dunn is because Wayne Krivsky is now a Special Assistant in the Front Office. You know Wayne Krivsky, he is the guy the Reds FIRED as their General Manager in April. So, Ricciardi may not know Adam Dunn but Wayne Krivsky sure as heck does. Which is probably why he got fired from the Reds in the first place.

Krivsky, in trying to model the Reds after the Twins and A's (building around Pitching and Defense, letting high priced veterans go either through trades or Free Agency and bringing in younger, less expensive talent), probably DIDN'T want to bring Dunn back to the Reds in 2008 while Ca$htellini did and that caused friction. So when old friend Jocketty was let go by St Louis, Ca$htellini swoops in and hires him as a Special Assistant and just waited for some excuse to get rid of Krivsky.

Notice, at the press conference, Ca$tellini said, "the losing stops now" and the Reds have proceeded to play five Games under .500 since then and NO moves have been made. This, even though the Reds are now in LAST PLACE and have been hovering around that position for well over a month AND with the Reds having 13 potential Free Agents after the season, having Alex Gonzalex, Ryan Freel and Norris Hopper on the DL with season ending surgeries AND having Aaron Harang, Jared Burton and Jerry Hairston Jr on the DL right now.

Oddly, this disinterest in Dunn parallels with the disinterest he "generates" in fantasy too. Even is OBP leagues.

"Dunn ... is very unclutch."

Dunn career: .247/.381/.522, 1 HR every 13.75 AB
Dunn close & late: .231/.382/.516, 1 HR every 13.85 AB

That's nearly identical.

"He's just saying that the Tigers have a possible interest in Schoeneweis, but if the Mets trade him they need a replacement in the bullpen which they don't have in-house."

Bingo.

Doesn't really make sense for the Mets to move Schoeneweis without a replacement coming to town, and unless it's for the Outfielder we need. Thames would be a possability, but his low OBP nature doesn't fit with what the Mets usually do, plus there's the question on if he is even expendible for Detroit. But the belief is that Schoeneweis has maxed out on his trade value and it would be selling high for someone who probably is going to come back to earth.

Dang, nice Not Joe. Thanks for the stats.

JP Riccardi is an idiot, and has proved it several times. I can't believe he still has a job as the GM for a major league team.

"...he strikes out alot, and is very unclutch."

Who cares if he strikes out a lot? Strikeouts are not really any worse than a flyout or a groundout. And in some cases better because they don't end up in a double play. Dunn does strikeout, but he also walks a lot. And more importantly, he homers a lot.

Unclutch? What does that mean? Show me some stats that show his unclutchiness. Clutch (and unclutch) something stupid that people like Steve Phillips and John Kruk say.

Most Reds fans hate Dunn and I hope he leaves Cincinnati soon and goes somewhere his 40 HR, 100+ RBI and 900+ OPS are appreciated. I would love to have him in St. Louis beating Dusty Baseclogger's team into the ground.

I wish I could be excited about Putz, but he just hasn't been right this year. I think there's something really wrong with him. I'd bet if he doesn't get dealt, the M's will shut him down for the year.

Adam Dunn's unclutch stats this season:
-is batting .204 with men on and 2 outs
- is batting .242 with runners in scoring position and two outs
-is batting .234 with runners on base
-is batting .205 close and late

also, strikeout a ton can be a big deal. true it can lead to double plays and it is the same as a flyball out but, making contact leads to sacrifice flys, "productive outs," and errors made by the other team.
but, with all of these stats im still not saying that i wouldnt want to have dunn on the mets... it just depends on what they have to give up. i wouldnt give up a top prospect for him. he is a great power bat that the mets need. i mean who wouldnt want a player that's leading the league in homeruns and walks? his fielding is terrible but chavez could always be used as a late inning replacement for him.

mets projected lineup:
reyes (s)
church (l)
wright (r)
delgado(l)
beltran (s)
dunn (l)
easley (r)/castillo(s)/ a.reyes (s) (could bat eigth when reyes or castillo plays)
castro (r)/schneider(l) (could bat seventh when castro plays)
pitcher
looks like a dangerous lineup to me

"I would also like the Mets to go after Dunn, I believe he is the best option for cheap. He has legitimate power which is what the Mets needed, but now with Delgado coming on maybe the Mets have shied away from Dunn"

I do not know what makes you think he will come cheap, because he wont. nymets86.... You won't give away top prospects for a guy who is set to bring in 2 draft picks, and he also is an OPS monster who leads in walks and HR's every year. How exactly do you plan on obtaining him then? I would actually like to see Dunn in the 2 hole if he became a Met. He is patient enough to let Reyes try to steal, and being in that spot would get him tons of fastballs. My lineup would look like this with Dunn in the lineup.

Reyes
Dunn
Wright
Delgado
Beltran
Church
Easley
Schneider

or

Reyes
Beltran
Church
Delgado
Wright
Dunn
Easley
Schneider

I doubt it happens though anyway.
