« The Lefty Reliever Market | Main | Rosenthal's Latest: Fuentes, Sherrill, Nady, Kemp, Guthrie »
According to Dan Graziano of the Newark Star-Ledger, the Mets had a scout watching the Rangers last night. Graziano suggests Marlon Byrd as a possible player of interest.
First baseman/left fielder Frank Catalanotto may be available, but he comes with a $6MM commitment beyond this year. Lefty reliever Eddie Guardado is another possibility. The Rangers don't seem compelled to trade starting pitching or Milton Bradley.

I don't think the Mets want Catalanotto. Ever try to fit that guy's name on the back of a jersey? It ain't easy.

Wow...them Mets is gettin' desperate.

That ones got to be for everday Eddie. Maybe Cruz and Eddie for one of our AA guys and a low A prospect.

Forget fitting Catalanotto's name on a jersey, ever see Saltalamachia's jersey? His name makes a 180 degree arc around his number.

Well I mean Saltalamacchia is the longest last name in the history of major league baseball, so it figures that it'd be tough to fit on the jersey.
And honestly, is Catalanotto that bad of an addition? He's going to give you a consistent .280/.360/.400 line and he's able to do it at the weakest positions the Mets have (corner OF, 1B). He wouldn't cost the Mets anything in terms of talent if the Rangers would just trade him as a salary dump. With Davis at first now, Blalock back at third, and the outfield pretty much set with Hammy, Murphy, Byrd, Bradley and Boggs, he doesn't have a clear spot on this team anyways.

catalanotto is a bad fit for the mets simply because he's another left-handed hitter on a team with an abundance of them.
he's not a difference maker by any stretch and that's what the mets severely need right now. that's the same i wouldn't even want casey blake on this team. the criticism of omar is that he always go for the older, seasoned players at the expense of youth and now everyone wants to link the mets up with every older player on the block. i'm surprised kenny lofton's name hasn't been brought up.
i could definitely see omar going for the likes of nelson cruz. that's an omar move if there ever was one.

Uhh I dont think the Mets really stand a chance of getting a "difference-maker". Generally you need to have a good farm system and the desire to do that. I'm not so sure the Mets do.
And acquisition like Catalanotto is the kind of one that's going to happen, or maybe Nady if you're lucky.
Posted by: scribbletone | July 22, 2008 at 12:56 PM
catalanotto isn't coming here. again, he's another lefty on a team that has a bunch of them already. the mets need a guy who can spell delgado at first and play left field. while frank can do both, there is still the little issue of him BEING A LEFT-HANDED HITTER.
omar will go after nady, bay or holliday and most likely end up with blake.

I would hope the Mets aren't interested in Byrd. Last year was a fluke; his numbers looked good because of his stats at the Ballpark.
Cruz on the other hand....if the Mets' scouts like him could be just what they are looking for.

Marlon Byrd? Isn't one banjo-hitting waste of a roster space named "Marlon" enough?
Posted by: JK47 | July 22, 2008 at 01:37 PM
The Mets are tied for first place, already have Wright, Reyes, and Beltran, not to mention a torrid Delgado and by far the best pitching staff in their division. They don't need a difference maker. They just need a guy who is capable of being a bit better then league average and playing everyday. Randy Winn/Casey Blake/Juan Rivera are all fine. Just pickup whoever costs the least in terms or players.
They are far from desperate.

I also don't buy the Guardado stuff. Its possible, but why spend prospects on a loogy when you already have Show and Feliciano? Unless they could possibly trade Feliciano to get a LF. Otherwise, I dont see it.

I wouldn't really call reacquiring a pretty good bat that is currently performing way over his head and who's value is probably higher then it will ever be at any point in his career lucky. I think it would suck if the Mets go get Nady, that is if he is really going to cost what has been rumored. Go get Rivera, bat him 5th, and be done with it. Or else go get Winn, stick him in the 2 hole, and be done with it. They just need an everyday LF, not an all star.

thank you, nrmax88! i don't get met fans who keep pining for nady. doesn't everyone remember the near horrorshow he was in right with virtually no range?
Posted by: FranzFerdinand | July 22, 2008 at 05:20 PM
I think Juan Rivera will stay an Angel this year. He's the only guy thats hitting and currently Matthews Jr. is forgotten in Anaheim right now.
And the Angels dont make trades.
But I do hope it happens, and I hope the Mets make a killer trade and give the Angels nothing for him.

Bradley has been hitting an anemic .244 since July 1. That and the fact he has come close to lasting/playing a full season and is a lifetime .269 hitter over the 2nd-half, should give pause to people thinking he'd be a fantastic addition and to Rangers fans who argue he should be signed to an extension.

Should be "that and the fact he has NEVER come close to lasting/playing a full season..." sorry.
