« The Price For Fuentes | Main | Free Agent Compensation »
ESPN's Buster Olney had some details on Mariners left fielder Raul Ibanez yesterday:
There is a perception that the Mariners' asking price on Raul Ibanez is high, but Seattle hasn't deeply negotiated with anyone yet -- though the Mariners will be getting into those talks in the days ahead. While their asking price is going to be affected by the fact that Ibanez will likely be a Type A free agent after the season and would command two compensation draft picks, it figures that they'll work out a deal with the Mets, Diamondbacks or some other team for Ibanez, who is arguably the best left-handed hitter on the market. It figures, too, that the Mariners will be looking to move Jose Vidro.
There are other quality left-handed hitters on the market - Adam Dunn and Aubrey Huff have both out-hit Ibanez this year. All three are question marks defensively though.
Ibanez and Dunn are both free agents after the season, and are highly likely to earn Type A status.

I still think that an Adam Dunn/Bronson Arroyo blockbuster makes so much sense for the Yankees that its obscene.
Neither player has a ton of value, so packaging them together would maximize their value for the Reds. Arroyo doesnt have a good contract and Dunn will probably be gone next year anyways, so it would make sense for the Reds to move them.
Meanwhile, the Yankees are in need of a solid pitcher who can eat innings (ahem, Arroyo) as well as a good bat to replace whats lost with Matsui and injuries (ahem, Dunn).
Something like Jose Tabata and Ian Kennedy for those two could work. Maybe the Reds throw in a reliever if needed or something.
As for Ibanez, I think that the Mets will go out and make the proper moves to get him. Not sure what it'll take but he seems like the biggest impact bat they stand a chance of landing.

Scribbletone-
That was a very smart deal for both teams.

Ibanez to the Mets won't happen, not unless NY throws two good prospects at them, like the 16 year old SS who is playing rookie ball and a couple arms... The Mets farm system is a joke and there are not many pieces we need, but the biggest is SS and 3B prospects, especially younger ones...
We already have guys in the high minor leagues at those positions, but lack depth below... At first base, we have Raben, Hubbard, Limonta, LaHair, so why we would take either of the AA 1B they have been trying to push on Seattle is beyond me... There's no way the M's go for the overrated F-Mart, considering the last guy that was this hyped is now 28, branded a AAAA player, and playing in Tacoma the AAA affiliate of the Mariners... I don't see them paying top dollar for a low-budget player who hasn't shown any ability to produce resonable results with the tools he has...
I eel that Ibanez is a good fit for the Diamondbacks and think that a solution could be to move LaHair with Ibanez to Arizona for Conor Jackson and a AA pitching prospect or maybe add a little more into the deal like Rhodes and Lowe, so the Mariners can get Scherzer also. With all the good bats in AZ batting right handed, like Upton, Young, injured Byrnes, Reynolds, etc. Conor Jackson would be odd man out as I think they would have to move Tracy, Jackson, or Reynolds in a deal and Reynolds isn't available and Tracy is the only other legitimate option for a middle of the order lefty... Drew is more a leadoff/number two hitter...

BaseballGuru:
No offense, but you are completely DELUSIONAL if you think Ibanez, Lowe, and Rhodes gets you Scherzer, Jackson, and a prospect. Talk about overrating your own players...
Oh, and F-Mart for Ibanez???? Not in a million years...
Anywho, Ibanez is decent, but I would greatly prefer Adam Dunn....

If the Mets offered something like Eddie Kunz and Mike Carp/Greg Veloz then I think that the Mariners would have to seriously consider it.
I just think that the Mets have to do something, and Ibanez would be solid.
"eel that Ibanez is a good fit for the Diamondbacks and think that a solution could be to move LaHair with Ibanez to Arizona for Conor Jackson and a AA pitching prospect or maybe add a little more into the deal like Rhodes and Lowe, so the Mariners can get Scherzer also."
Are you out of your mind? I mean havent you realized yet that most of the suggestions youre making are crazy? I mean c'mon, it's freaking Raul Ibanez.
The Diamondbacks are trying to ADD a bat, not trade one away in giving up Conor Jackson. That trade would have drastically negative effects on the Diamondbacks organization. And then, after that, you're gonna throw in some mediocre relievers to add in Max Scherzer? Max Scherzer, the guy with electric stuff who projects as either a top of the rotation starter or elite closer? C'mon man. I mean how do you come up with these ideas and justify them? I mean its like your personal opinion of players completely and utterly trumps the consensus of far more educated baseball people.
"There's no way the M's go for the overrated F-Mart, considering the last guy that was this hyped is now 28, branded a AAAA player, and playing in Tacoma the AAA affiliate of the Mariners."
Yeah I mean, the kid has just been one of the youngest players in every league he's played in, and continues to flash his stunning tools. I mean the guy has been solid as a 19 year old in AA so he's obviously got something going for him. To already call him an overrated bust at 19 is just dumb.

What... Your expert opinion?! Ibanez is good for a Type A status which means that the Diamondbacks would be getting Ibanez, LaHair, Rhodes, Lowe, 1st round draft pick, and a supplemental 1st round draft pick for Jackson, Scherzer. Let's see here, that's like 6 for 2?! NOw you may want Ibnez, but the Mets farm sucks and what tools has F-Mart shown?! His 160 SO to 40 walk ratio to go along with his 12 Homerun and 12 steal, power and speed?! I know, it's his cannon for an arm thatot him 3 OF Assists, I see it clearly now! My God, he's not that far ahead of his peer group and technically Greg Halman is 10 times the outfield prospect that F-Mart is, but because your guy plays in NY, he gets overhyped... I mean have you even heard of Halman?! Yet he's going to post close to a 40 Homeruns/40 Steals season, 120 RBI, 110 Runs, a .280 AVG, and he doesn't turn 21 for a month. Doing this all at AA. He's technically 1 year older by baseball standards... Oh and Halman was flirting with a 30/30 season last year during A ball.
As for Scherzer, he's no more electrc than Lowe... Mark Lowe has added a plus changeup to his plus slider, which compliments a 100mph fastball, when fully recovered. Lowe already has been throwing 95-96 comforably, he's even touch 97 recently, by the end of the season or beginning of next season, he should be close to 98-100 again... I've even seen him hit 103 mph in a Mariners game, fastest pitch I've ever seen in my life, during that inning he also threw 102 a few times. Sorry, but Lowe has just as electric stuff as Scherzer, but Scherzer is starter in my eyes and Lowe is a future closer. Considering the obvious need for relief help and not starters, imakes sense for them to trade Scherzer for an equally talented pitcher who can help them in th bullpen as a potential closer. Rhodes and LaHair amount to mostly a throw in. Rhodes is still one of the best lefty relievers in the game and can help them out a lot... LaHair could be a 1B at AAA who could help them in a pinch.
As for Conor Jackson, let's play your little game... Say that they don't get Jackson for Ibanez, yet looking at the Haren deal, it's entirely likely that the Diamondbacks would bend over on this one and let the Mariners spank their ass and call them daddy... What then happens to Jackson?! Chad Tracy is playing 1B, Mark Reynolds is playing 3B, Justin Upton is in RF, Ibanez is now in LF, oh you are going to pull Reynolds (3B of the future), no wait Tracy (only LH hitting batter with pop in their lineup besides Ibanez), then there's pulling Upton, possibly the best offensive player on the team... Hmmm, so they keep Jackson to rot on the bench when he enters arbitration next year?! I don't think so... Somewhere along the way the Mariners are going to trade for a ML 1B, somewhere... Jackson being replaced by Ibanez makes their offense better... Ibanez is top 10 in RBI, about to start his last two month HR spree... Has three in 6 games since the All-Star break. 8 RBI in 8 games now, 61 on the season. He's a consistent .300/.360/.450 type hitter and compaed with Jackson who has never hit more than 17 HR, that's a huge improvement. Jackson takes pitches and walks though, which the Mariners need since they are all a bunch of 1st pitch swingers...
