Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette sums up the Pirates' trade deadline strategy in today's article.
- Jason Bay and Jack Wilson are not being shopped. The Bucs like having both under contract beyond this year. It sounds like Neal Huntington would have to be bowled over to move either guy.
- Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte are the players most likely to go. Nady is under team control for next year, while Marte's $6MM option will be declined. The Pirates are thinking they can decline Marte's option, offer him arbitration, and let him decline to accept. Then they might be able to net two respectable draft picks for '09, assuming he's a Type A. So Nady is a more likely trade candidate than Marte.
This is why the Pirates are the Pirates. If a team calls about Jack Wilson, with that type of contract, and is interested, you listen. The Pirates wanted someone from the Dodgers major league roster and I'm guessing names like Matt Kemp and Andy LaRoche were brought up by the Pirates. Good luck!

You're right Speedy, Jack Wilson isn't going to turn them into a playoff team, never has, and he's not going to be around the next time the Pirates sniff the playoffs. He's exactly the kind of player the Bucs need to be dealing, not hanging on to. And hey, the money they save by dealing Wilson could go towards helping pay off Matt Morris. Everybody wins!

This is just posturing by the Pirates' management. There are no untouchables on that roster and there shouldn't be when you're on track for a 16th consecutive season.
That said, if there are several teams in the market for a SS or corner OF, I'm not against them playing hard to get (within reason). Wilson won't fetch a Matt Kemp type player, but maybe Hu could come back in return.
I'm tired of hearing about contracts and money when it comes to Pirates players. That franchise annually turns a profit. If Bay or Wilson get dealt for legitimate prospects then fine, if they get dealt for "cost-certainty" then that's total BS.

Hu would be a fine trade for Wilson. Hell, they are similar players, and Hu has much more upside.
As for Kemp-Wilson, maybe if the Pirates also threw in Jason Bay or Nate McLouth and Matt Capps.

AA: I do not believe Hu is at the point where he would be a good straight up trade for Jack Wilson. I think LA would need to add a pitching prospect as well. Also, Hu is injured right now with some kind of eye problem. So, i do not know how well that will work for his trade value. Also, I agree that Jack Wilson will not single handedly get Kemp. But, I think throwing in a Bay/Mclouth AND Matt Capps is a little much. I could see the pirates adding possibly Nady to Jack Wilson as an offer, but to lose at least one current or former all-star outfielder and your current/future closer and your starting SS is a little much to get one guy. I understand Kemp is a future superstar, but the pirates would never give that much up.
I agree with D Sanchez. i believe this is more a ploy by the pirates management to get more value on these players. The Pirates have a horrible record of being that team that dumps good players for low value. This type of press allows the Pirates to show that teams must put up good offers or the pirates could very well hold on to every one of these guys if those offers are not good enough.
