Rockies Eyeing Byrd, Duchscherer

MONDAY: The Rockies won't be acquiring Arroyo, but add Cleveland's Paul Byrd to their list.  Buster Olney wonders whether Byrd might clear waivers in August if need be.  He has about $2.7MM left on his contract.

SUNDAY: According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the Rockies have inquired on A's starter Justin Duchscherer as part of their hunt for a starter.  Duchscherer is under team control through '09.  As you know, the Rockies also asked the Reds about Bronson Arroyo

Olney notes that GM Dan O'Dowd continues to talk to other teams about Brian Fuentes.  It seems quite possible that the Rockies will try to have it both ways.

Honestly, I do not see anything the A's would want from the Rockies in return for Justin Duchscherer. Unless, the Rockies are willing to give up Ian Stewart. But that's not happening.

Arroyo is a terrible idea for Coors. Too many homers.

The A's want Holliday, that is not a huge secret. If the Rockies are interested in Duke, the A's have the additional prospects to make it work.

Well, Duchsherer was gonna come off cloud 9 eventually, and yesturday he did, but he is still up there is ERA and may still lead, not sure. Don't know why the Rocks would inquire about him if they are about to sell, Prospect wise I think it'd probably take Stewart and Renyolds. Which isn't bad. But another idea I had was Duchsherer and a prospect like Vin Mazzaro for Holliday, the prospect could be a little better or maybe two lower level guys, but I'd put Gonzalez, Cahill, Anderson, H-Rod, and maybe even Simmons off limits. Good deal for both sides. But then the A's ace is Dana Eveland!!! Wow! that would be scary.

Could also be a 3 way deal involving Fuentes, Dukes, and others.

If the Rockies were interested in Duchscherer, there is now way they would give up Holliday.

Possible 3-way trade could be:

Rockies get: Duchsherer

Rays get: Fuentes

A's get: David Price and/or Reid Brignac

of course there would be other players and prospects thrown in.

Not a chance the Rays trade Price for Fuentes. End of story.

jolstad- If the Rays were to give up David Price for Fuentes, I'm thinking that the A's will have to sweeten the pot. Since Fuentes is a rental and the Rox are getting an SP signed through '09, so the Rox could easily put in another prospect which would go to the Rays.

I think the Rockies would love Cardenas.

I don't get why the Rockies are looking to get Duke though? It seems as though the only way this rumor makes sense is if Holliday was heading to the A's, and that would defeat the purpose of the Rockies acquiring Duke.

The A's are not going to be looking to dump Duke for prospects. Their future is extremely bright, and he is an affordable two time All Star. It could be argued that he is the lowest paid two time All Star out there. He would be lucky to make Zito's one year salary over the next three.

The A's are looking for prospects. Trading the Duke for Ian Stewart and Dexter Fowler makes since. Especially since Eric Chavez is talking about becoming a first baseman.

The A's don't need anymore prospects. They have only traded people who are not going to be around in 2010, and have acquired players that will. This team can win next year, and the next, if they swap some of their prospects for Bay. Keeping Duke makes them more of a contender for the next couple years. If they trade him, they might as well go into full rebuilding mode, and trade Ellis and Crosby. I don't see this happening.

And Eric Chavez is not going to be a first baseman for the A's. His value is being a gold glove third baseman with pop. The A's have several options at first base over the next couple years, and are not going to continue paying Chavez millions to block those prospects.

There is no way that the Duke nets a return of Stewart and Fowler. Beane would be lucky to get his hands on one of those two prospects.

A's get Hector Gomez, Reynolds, and Chris Nelson

Rockies get Duchscherer

Seems like a good deal for both teams. Reynolds is a good prospect pitcher with good stuff when healthy, Nelson would be the SS of the future for the A's and Gomez could be the Future third baseman of the A's. Gomez is awhile away but he looks to be a good prospect. And the Rockies really wont miss those prospects.

The Rockies got Tulo and Stewart or Atkins at SS and Third. I guess if they wanted to they could keep Nelson and play him at second but Eric Young Jr. looks to be a solid second baseman for them in the future. I think that would be a very good trade for both teams.

A's REALLY need Left Side Infield Help.

Crosby sucks, and Chavez's might retire because his shoudler is "in shreds".

A Duchscherer for Dexter and Ian Stewart would be exactly what the A's need. And I can see them only asking for that, perhaps maybe throwing in a non-entity for the Rockies like Matt Murton or Alan Embree as well.

Or maybe the Rockies could deal for Mark Ellis as well?

know Id yuh,

Are you Jason Bay's secret lover or something? You seem to be oppsesed with the A's getting him. Don't get me wrong he's a good player, but for what NH is asking for I'd kill Beane if he made that deal. And I doubt he will because he said the A's ALREADY are in a all-in re-building process. So I don't see the A's trading ANY of the prospects we just acquired. Including Cardenas, who is arguably considered the best 2B prospect in the game.

I'd be very surprised to see Dexter Fowler traded. I don't think the Rockies see Taveras as the long term answer in CF and thus will want to retain Fowler as their CF of the future.

First off, you do not trade a high end prospect you just received in a trade within a couple of weeks. So basically you can take Adrian Cardenas out of any trades.

If Billy Beane can get Ian Stewart from the Rockies for Justin Duchscherer, as an A's fan I would take it in a second.

For some reason, I do not see the Rockies moving Stewart.

Alan Embree is not a "non-entity". The A's might be able to move Embree to the Dodgers for LaRoche. Several teams are looking at Embree right now. Almost every playoff contention team needs left handed bullpen help.

If you are going to throw something extra in the Duchsherer-Stewart deal, Emil Brown would make better sense. Even though Brown has been horrible pinch hitting. Emil Brown also struggles when he does not play everyday.

A's get: Ian Stewart plus 3 other prospects

Rockies get: Justin Duchsherer, Emil Brown, PTBNL

Ari,

The A's have Sweeney and Gonzales in center and right for the next 5 years. Gonzales has hit some balls really hard, though not necessarily in the air. I think he might hit 15-20 HRs next year, while playing great defense. Sweeney is big, and young, and has been swinging the bat harder recently. It would not be unheard of for him to approach 15 HRs next year. The missing piece of the OF picture is a left fielder who is right handed, and someone like bay who could hit 30-35 HRs each year with a decent batting average would make the A's outfield extremely solid.

You can look at the A's currently, a team that was recently contending, and realistically add several more HRs, RBIs, and batting average points to each hitter. Which hitter is really having a great year for Oakland?

Beane's trades have thus for been geared toward remaining a somewhat contender this year, and getting better next year. The Blanton trade was not about getting better this or next year, which is why I assumed the prospects he got in return were to make a run at a bat. Too bad they lost 9 of ten, because the Bay trade might not happen because of it.

I think Stewart is pretty much off limits right now. Helton's future with the team in in doubts right now, and the plan is to move Atkins to 1st and give 3rd to Stewart. I doubt the Rockies will take the chance With Helton's diminishing play and health issues.

Fowler is also a long shot to be traded. I really doubt the club would trade him when they were forced to trade Walker in order to sign Fowler. Besides, I'm sure they don't want to mess with him 2 weeks before the Olympics.

If something can be worked out with Reynolds + a bunch of prospects, I would be all for that.

I think people are underestimating how cheap Duke is. He will command more than the Brewers paid for the Sabathia rental. Granted, Sabathia has a better track record of staying healthy and pitching well, but Duke can be a much better pitcher over the next three years than Sabathia at a fraction of the cost.

FYI, Duke is not under control for 3 years, he is free after 2009 (same situation as M Holliday). Secondly, CC is a better pitcher than Duke now, over the last several years and in the future.
That said, his value is comparable to CC.

I think realistically, the A's will ask for Chacin or Fowler, the Rockies will say no, how about Barmes and Spilborghs.

To meet in the middle, I'd guess Reynolds or Hynick, either C Nelson or H Gomez and Spilborghs.

Rockies will not part with Fowler or Chacin at this point and Holliday will not be going to Oakland.

" It could be argued that he is the lowest paid two time All Star out there. He would be lucky to make Zito's one year salary over the next three."

Duchscherer is not the lowest paid 2 time all-star. I can think of another off the top of my head: Dan Uggla (2006, 2008) makes 417k a year, Duke makes 1.2 mill. I'm sure there are quite a few more making less. And again, Duke is free after 2009 and will make a pretty penny next year in arbitration from someone (which is why Beane would consider moving him).

FYI, I never said Duke is controlled for three years. He is looking for an extension, and is only making 1.2 million this year. He is looking to cash in on his fine season thus far. Any team willing to guarantee him 3 years at 20 million can sign him, including the A's. He also knows he has arm issues, so there is no reason to assume he will continue to be healthy for three years. Most players do not go from 1.2 million per year to a multi year extension paying them what top starters get (9-16 million per year).

Uggla is making what he is suppose to make. He has not hit arbitration yet, and will not be a free agent until 2012. Duke will be a free agent after next season. Maybe I should have said "underpaid", but since I said it is arguable, you bring a legit argument to the table. Any one else you want to add to the argument, or was my initial point correct that it could be argued he is lowest paid two time all star out there?

Sure, I can dig up a few more names. Paps - 3 times makes 775k (yep, no arbitration yet for him or the others), Russ Martin - 2 times makes 500k, McCann - 3 times makes 966k, Jenks - 2 times makes 550k.

To speculate, let's say Duke stays with the A's. He'll get around 6-7 million in arbitration if he stays the course and doesn't win the CY. Let's say he starts next year, is healthy all year, gets 200 innings, has an ERA around 3 and makes another All-Star team. At that point, he will cash in and command 12 million plus in the market.

It's moot, I doubt the deal happens since Beane sees Duke as a sell high guy with his injury past wanting to get a Fowler or Chacin, and the Rockies aren't likely to deal them.

Your numbers are too high. If Duke asks for 6-7 million in arbitration, he will end up making 3.5, because that is what the A's would counter with, and that is assuming he remains somewhat dominant. I think 4 million is more than fair for him next season. If he has another great year, 12 million also seems very high. Players don't increase their salaries that dramatically unless they have a track record, and this is Duke's first year starting, and he has been on the DL already.

interesting duke for holliday? i would think A's would include a prospect or two.

the Rockies are said to have inquired about All-Star starter Justin Duchscherer. Duchscherer for Matt Holliday is a possibility, according to two sources, and the A's also have reportedly chatted with the Pirates about acquiring outfielder Jason Bay, although Pittsburgh's asking price might be too high.

I don't see beane wanting anymore pitching prospects. So take reynolds and hynick off. If he got jimenez or morales he would listen on them though. I see beane trigger fowler and gomez. If beane were to sweaten his deal and add simmons or barton or buck he would be able to probably net stewart, fowler, and nelson.
