Walters With A Twins Scenario

Charley Walters of the St. Paul Pioneer Press tosses out a trade scenario:

It will be interesting whether the Twins try to package Michael Cuddyer and Livan Hernandez in a trade for a slugging third baseman before the July 31 deadline, saving $20 million in guaranteed money to Cuddyer and $2.5 million to Hernandez. Denard Span ($390,000) would replace Cuddyer in right field, and Francisco Liriano ($400,000) would replace Hernandez in the starting rotation.

Will Carroll said the Twins are looking at players like Adrian Beltre, Hank Blalock, Garrett Atkins, and Casey Blake.  But I can't see the Mariners, Rangers, Rockies, or Indians biting on a Hernandez/Cuddyer offer.

i think blalock would be the easiest guy to pull away with, considering what they are willing to give up, even still, i dont see those two guys appetizing any team really either...

I think Walters is throwing stuff against a wall to see what sticks. Can't see the M's wanting either Cuddyer or Hernandez. They need prospects to replace the load they dumped to get Bedard. If Beltre goes to Minnesota, it will be for some of the Twins' kids, not an injured underperforming OF and a (nearly) washed up P who can't hit 85 on the gun any more.

Isn't Blalock a LH hitter? That would make him the least likely of that foursome to interest Minnesota, I think. They should be looking for a RH hitter to hit behind LH hitters Mauer Morneau, not another lefty. Atkins and Beltre seem more likely, with Blake not out of the question.

I completely agree that either of those players don't seem very interesting. Cuddyer has only had one big season that I can think of. Hernandez is incredibly hittable, and is way to expensive in the name of providing depth.

None of the possible suitors would seem to benefit from that package at all. The Mariners already got one over paid former Twin in Carlos Silva.

I could see the Reds biting and sending out EE in a deal for Cuddyer, that way they could plan ahead for next year and put Gonzo at SS and Kepp at third, with Cuddyer in RF and Bruce in CF. Second part of the deal would have to likely not be livan hernandez though.

What about this scenario with the yankees...A package of Betemit and a B level pitching prospect for Livan and Cuddyer. Livan as an innings eater could help and if matsui is down for as long as people are saying cuddyer could be a nice righty bat in that lineup (instead of Justin Christian)

The Twins should trade for Beltre, but they are too cheap and never make the splash they need to. They will either trade for Casey Blake or Jose Bautista. Both are upgrades over their current situation, but neither is really the player they need.

I agree with the posters who acknowledged that the Twins will not be able to land a slugging 3B by offering Livan and/or Cuddeyer. They might be able to land a Wes Helms type or Betemit, but certainly not Atkins or Beltre.

As for the Yanks, I think they'll pursue a bigger bat if they decide they need another OF. I also don't think they're a fit for Hernandez since he's not much of an upgrade over Ponson or Rasner. Randy Wolf or Joe Blanton make a little more sense, even if they have higher price tags.

Betemit is a guy who's gone under the radar from a lot of people I've talked with. He's gonna be cheap, and the Yankees need another guy who can give you good innings.

Why would the Indians risk trading their own player within their division and risk that coming back to bite them? Don't see that.

Despite Beltre's/Atkins' cost, don't be surprised if one of those deals is pulled off. Bill Smith has pulled off 3 deals (Monroe- PTBNL, Young-Garza, Santana-Gomez), and he hasn't even been GM for a whole year! While Livan and Cuddyer package doesn't seem so attractive, there are plenty of other prospects the Twins would be willing to part ways with.

Another guy the Twins could go after is Andy LaRoche. Blake DeWitt's emergence has kinda made it tough on LaRoche, and he'd be somewhat cheap.

I don't get why MIN doesn't just move Cuddyer to his original position - 3B - so Span can get a well-deserved starting job in the OF.

you can throw atkins out of the discussion, because the rockies will want way too much. plus, holliday will be traded before atkins, and i don't see them trading both. they'll probably resign atkins and move him to first when helton is done and stewart is ready for 3B.

i could see a beltre trade working out though. it shouldn't take too much to get him with his nice salary for next year (12 mil). maybe a swarzak, mulvey combo?

livan has been good in the dome all season, and would be a good pitcher to have down the stretch, because he won't get hurt and can eat innings in case one of the youngins (slowey, baker, perkins, blackburn, liriano) wears down. plus, no one will trade for him, come on. cuddyer is immovable, because of his injury problems and contract. and he's not going to his "original" position 3B, because we all saw what he can do there.

rangerchick,

the Twins believe Cuddyer finally found a position, they don't wanna keep moving him.

Walter is an idiot. He just makes this crap up. Span in right field?!?!?! That would be the weakest hitting RF in all of the majors. A team lacking power like the Twins, needs to keep and attempt to get power in the corners.

Walters, you are an idiot.

small sample size, no doubt, but Span has an 851 OPS in 71 ABs so far this season. power isn't all about HRs. and he's certainly not hitting worse than austin kearns... ;)

nobody with a brain would give up much for livan. he pitched well into may, but in june and july his ERAs were 6.62 and 7.84 respectively and he averaged below 6ip per game. not much left of the "horse" of old.

What do you think it would take to get Atkins? i am saying Swazrak and span should do it. . . becuase the have Ian (blanking on his last name) sitting for his chance, and looking at there pitching staff Swazrak could come pitch for them tomarrow!!!

i don't think swarzak could go pitch for the rockies tomm(especially in that park) considering he's gettin hammered in double-a and i work for the rock cats i've seen up close half his starts.

i was kidding, but then you must be able to see first hand how good he will be
