« Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Giles, Teixeira, Dunn, Manny | Main | Reds Hire Bill Bavasi »
According to Joe Frisaro of MLB.com, the Marlins signed Paul Lo Duca to a minor league deal today. Lo Duca will head to Triple A as the team's insurance plan.
The Nationals signed Lo Duca for a hefty $5MM in December of '07, three days before he was named in the Mitchell Report. The 36 year-old hit just .230/.301/.281 in 153 plate appearances, hobbled by knee surgery and a broken bone in his throwing hand. Lo Duca was a Marlin for part of the '04 season and all of '05, though he did not hit well for them.
Additionally, Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post reports that the Marlins claimed Brad Ausmus off waivers from the Astros. It's unclear whether they'll work out a deal or salary dump. Ausmus is owed another $590K this year.

Let's see the Marlin's signing Lo Duca. This could be either ok for the Marlins triple-A or really really bad. He is getting old so the injuries do have a play. Based on his numbers with the marlins he could do o.k off of Triple-A pitching. I think he will hit about .250-.270. But who knows he might do good.

Hopefully Lo Duca can help the Marlins but not too much because my mets need to make the playoffs and adding Lo Duca and Ausmus and their experience is a positive signing for the Marlins but hopefully age and the whole steroid speculation will make it a negative...

Ausmus will not be a member of the Marlins.
Teams put many players on waivers at this point in the season. Most are never intended to be traded. They are used to mask the players that are really intended to be dealt.
What hasn't been said, but should have is that Ausmus has 10 and 5 rights. Meaning that he can block a trade and per the Houston Chronicle has already said that he would.
