5:47pm: Alvarez's contract is signed.
3:26pm: MLB just issued a press release...the dispute has been resolved. Alvarez and Eric Hosmer are free to play ball.
10:06am: According to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Pedro Alvarez and Scott Boras are in downtown Pittsburgh this morning. The union's grievance might be dropped today (testimony has been postponed), and Alvarez should take his physical and sign the contract soon.
A few questions to ponder. If Alvarez wins ROY in 2010, will all be forgiven in Pittsburgh? And will the Pirates be willing to use their early first-round pick next year on a Boras client?

Odds are if he wins ROY, all will be forgotten and history rewritten. It's not like he pulled a JD Drew and flatly refused to go to Philly (of course you had loudmouth Schill pushing the hatred of him).
But to be honest if he turns into an average player, I will have to laugh. Remember, prospect means just that. It's far from guaranteed he'll be a future star.

I don't think it will be forgiven till he signs a extension to stay in Pittsburg.

If he wins ROY, people will forget all about this.
Personally, I'd like to hear the guy give an interview already

We're not in a position to pass on a draft pick because of who represents him.

We were in a position last year! I'd much rather have Matt Wieters than Danny Moskos.

As a Pirates fan I was ready to wipe my hands of all this but bottom line, if the Pirates want to win again they have to follow the trend of the rest of baseball. That is be greedy, take the best player available no matter what is demanded...everything else is secondary.
Sadly, this is how the big boys play...Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs. The Pirates are in no shape to be trend setters by taking lesser talent for less money or focusing on character quality. As far as Pedro winning the ROY, I think as long as Pedro is open to the fans of pittsburgh, he will be a king and the fans will love him. People say Pittsburgh is not a baseball town and I disagree. Im not stating it is a Boston by any means, but this town follows talent and dedication. You cannot buy a seat for the Penguins this year, and Sidney Crosby is a shade below a king around these parts. So yes, the fans will forgive and forget if Pedro is the half the player they say he is and all the man they say he is.

all I can say is it's about time.now Hosmer can resume his career

What's everyones opinion on the likeliness that either of these two, Alvarez or Hosmer, pan out to be anything worth their contracts?
-I'll take Alvarez at 80% and Hosmer at 40%
The one thing I love about baseball is uncertainty. In other words, you can draft a star in the 8th round who is a 1000x's better than someone drafted in the 1st.

Just another example as to why Scott Boras is the best agent in professional sports.

If he has to win the ROY just to be forgiven that isn't a great situation. Think about it. The ROY isn't a lock no matter how highly regarded the prospect is. In addition to the talent, there's a lot of circumstances and opportunity that has to go right. What if he gets promoted mid-year in the wrong year which disqualifies him from a full rookie season usually needed to get the award? What if he gets rushed? What if an injury forces a rush? What if he needs time to adjust, in spite of talent? In the last 10 years in both leagues (20 ROYs) a Top 5 pick got the award only 4 times. In the same span only 7 of them were even 1st rounders.

What average Pirate fan even knows whats going on with it?
Hes signed. hes a Pirate. Thats all that matters to them.
No one will even remember this in 6 months.

^^^^^True.
In baseball time, 3 years is a long long time. By the time he reaches the majors, folks will hardly remember this fiasco. In all fairness it's probably more to do with Boras than Pedro. He'll be fine. He just needs to focus on baseball and start crushing the ball.

i will remember this kid as the greedy snot who wanted a few more dollars just to play. I wonder if he'll actually make it big.
